NX Product Templates: How does the "Part Family Refinement" control work? [NX 2212]

  • I've had a few questions about the "Part Family Refinement" control inside Product Template Studio and Product Template Author. This is not a new control, but it's certainly less used than many. With that said, it's quite useful when you need it!
Fundamentally this is a UI control to help your end user in cases where you as the author have added criteria to automatically select Part Family members within your Product Template, but you've not added enough criteria to fully refine the part family member selection down to just one child. When you've "got it right," the control will confirm that fact for you and your end users. In those "ambiguous" cases, this control will give users the option to choose from among any of the part family members that do meet all of your criteria.
...and yes, sometimes it's just easier to see it than to read about it. I hope you find this useful!

    Hello Mr Anderson,
this video helpes me out a ton, thanks for that. I got two further questions for you.
    1) I noticed, that I cannot use all Attributes and Expressions of the Part Family to refine the selection. What are the restriction on that?
    2) I it possible to reuse other product templates, where I can fill the dialog values based on expressions?

Thank you for the video. Can you explain how to automatically add the 4 bolts or the 6 bolts depending on the Part family part that is chosen?

Certainly! The simple answer here is that the quantity (and position) is driven by a Component Pattern. Specifically in this case, the Component Pattern is following the Feature Pattern driving the holes... In other words, the Component Pattern is using the "Reference" option and automatically filling up all of the holes in the Feature Pattern (however many that may be at any given moment) with a bolt. Does that make sense?

Hi Taylor, I have a simular component where I also need to change screws (diameter and length driven) but now I run in to two issues.
1 - the screws don't automaticly update when changing parameters. In the Part Family section of the Product Template the current screw is "out of date" but a proposal for the right screw is given.
2 - I am using a Pattern Component on this screw (without a Feature Pattern) but when changing the parameters, it replaces the origional scew, but the other 3 screws are not replaced.
Any sugestions why this is happening? (NX 2306)
