NX Assembly Mass Properties: Variable Mass for NX Deformable Components [NX 2406]
With the June 2024 release of NX, the author of a Deformable Component can now specify whether it should be considered as a classic Deformable Component with fixed mass, or as “stock” material with variable mass!
This video walks through the original historical intent for NX Deformable Components (they were originally envisioned as a way to model parts that are manufactured in a specific shape, but then stretched, bent, or otherwise deformed into position within the context of a specific destination assembly application). It then describes the "off-brand" usage that creative customers pioneered many years ago.
As Deformable Component authoring was upgraded in NX 2406, we added a new toggl...

From time to time in NX Template Studio Author, it's useful to allow users to choose between more than one input style for a specific expression. With the June 2024 release of NX, you can now add multiple widgets to control the same expression in different ways, and these will automatically stay synchronized. This can be useful in the context of simple/advanced or beginner/advanced dialog desig...

Hello! Taylor Anderson !What is the quality expression of the part? What can I do to change the size of the part with manually entered mass values?

    • @taylorandersonnxvideos
      @taylorandersonnxvideos 26 дней назад

@hualiang178 -- Great question. The mass of the body is generally an *output* from a body, rather than an input, so getting from a mass input to an appropriate "size" is going to either involve: 1) a quick expression calculation (if the shape is canonical and we can easily invert the volume equation) 2) a set of pre-determined known values (like the first half of this video), or 3) an iterative approach to "finding" the right size that produces the desired mass. For this non-canonical shape, I used the third method in the second half of this video. As described, starting at about 1:55 in the video, I have a small optimization (Goal Seek, really) iterating on a size parameter to find the size that produces the desired mass. The "how to" details are in the last third of this video. Does that make sense?

In this example, it is possible to have a single replaceable component that can be mounted to a different slot depending on the component selection made on the product template. (i.e. if component_1 is selected it gets mounted to slot A, if component_2 it goes to slot B). I could use suppression by expression, but i was wondering if i could use visual rules instead for a cleaner execution.

Hello Taylor, very clear, informative video as always - thank you. Quick question: At t=2:24 you had canceled the Measurement Tool, then moved the WCS back to Absolute CSYS (global 0,0,0 location), I assume by using Ctrl+Z to undo the WCS move? But however you moved WCS back from the hole in the plate back to Absolute origin, the thing that puzzles me is that at the instant you moved the WCS back to the Absolute CSYS, the visibility of Datum CSYS (0) turned on. Is that a feature on NX? Or was there a gap in the recording and during the gap you had manually turned on visibility for Datum CSYS (0)? Thank you.

Great question! My voiceover is usually recorded at the same time as the demonstration, so I honestly don't do a lot of detailed edits... I do not want to use the "edit reusable part" function once my reusable part (assembly) is placed in another assembly (where the expression is set) It now only seems to work when I open the "Edit reusable part" window and change the value there.

@user-ux5gs4dy7o: Great question, actually. You will need to use the Product Template UI to do this swap. It's not a general function that can be used outside the context of a Product Template interface. You *can* of course use "Component Suppression by Expression" techniques without a Product Template interface, if suppressed components are acceptable in your assemblies. Hope that helps!

    • @taylorandersonnxvideos

Great question! Certainly when a group is working together on an assembly, an individual component may be owned (and open for editing) by one designer, while also being viewed (in read-only mode) by others at the same time. And yes, if the mass and inertial properties have not yet been stored with the saved part, the read-only "others" can certainly generate mass properties data if needed in the context of their work. Their changes will not be saved when they close the read-only parts, but they can certainly calculate mass rollups, for instance, without the need for full read/write access to all components at the same time. Hope that answers your question!

Sorry I used the word collaboration but maybe that's not the exact word I need to use to explain my thoughts. Here's what I was thinking when I used the words "collaboration work". I was thinking more of a continuous improvement and live sharing system like those used in software development (Example: Visual Studio and the Github platform). This type of functionality implemented in CAD software could allow mass property updates by a manager or line manager through an automatic notification and automatic update process after approval by the 3D model owner.

@@lebeluet NX certainly does a lot of real-time change notification in the context of assemblies these days. Here's a good video to start you down that road: ruclips.net/video/sDopPt6RQ5w/видео.html

Hi Taylor, Thank you very much for your videos! They are really useful to understand how to use this feature properly. I would like to create a custom feature in nx that would allow me to set the pre-drill length for the drill depending on the thread size I want to create. Is it possible to add a list of thread size choices in the form that would allow users to change the thread size? Thank you so much!

Definitely! Sounds like a great application for using a Parameter Table to capture those standard configurations. Great question!

Hi! Nice video. I was wondering if you could describe how you got yourself that Cura Interface PlugIn. Maybe you could do a video on this one?

Does this still work on NX13? I'm trying to do this and I feel like I've copied what you've done correctly and they're all still the same number. The point moves and the expression works if I add +1, but the number is the same. Do patterns no longer use the iterations of values? I also think it would be helpful to see your settings for the text feature...

The key may be the formula for the String expression in the Text feature -- using the incremented point position to *also* increment the index of the selection from the list of labels. The explanation of this starts at 6:00 in this video. Does that help?
