  • The Cyan intro video and logo from Riven - the sequel to Myst. This was before they were called Cyan Worlds. In my opinion this was the coolest intro - it really added to the mood when I first played Riven - lights off, sound turned up - it was intense. This video was extracted from Riven itself using Riveal.

It's been 19 freaking years and I still get chills whenever I watch this. And the game STILL looks incredible.

Simply the best game I've ever played. I owe a lot to Cyan for giving me such an obsession that kept me going through my teens :)

This music speaks to me: it reminds me that I am entering the lair of a murderer, and I will likely not emerge from my journey unpunished.

I totally agree, the feeling when you first see and experience even just this introduction is just so awsome. And everytime afterwards, it always takes you back to that moment.

I agree, the music for this intro is undeniably Riven.
It's a shame to see Cyan has moved on, but I think their time and impact was just right. By the point of Myst IV the series was become too commercialized and stretched out, and Myst V was a shadow of the former games. In the end the golden era was Riven, I feel. And we can always pop in the CD's and visit there again when we're feeling particularly nostalgic.

Every time I play this game, this awsome game (in my opinion), and here this introduction I can't help but remember the very first time I experienced the haunting music and cool graphics (for the time it was created), still gives me gosebumps hearing it to this day, lol.

I've sometimes wondered whether this logo animation is inspired by René Magritte's paintings of rocky or metallic objects floating in the sky. It seems especially reminiscent of his paintings "The Voice of Space" and "The Castle of the Pyrenees".

This takes me back to 1998. The best year I ever had after leaving Phoenix, Arizona.
My dad got this for me as a present, and it was the first real game I had ever played on Windows 95. *sigh*

Even though they brought back the old logo intro in Uru, I noticed Cyan snuck in a nod to Riven. If you watch closely there's a Moiety dagger in the globe.

I agree completely. Everything about RIVEN is absolutely stunning, from story to puzzles to soundtrack (ah... the soundtrack... ). The most fascinating thing to me about this game is how stark the contrast is between it and the original MYST. Where MYST was light and whimsical, RIVEN was dark and ominous. while MYST was a fascinating place to tinker with, RIVEN was a fully realized world, with thought-provoking elements of the story delving into philosophy, morality, culture, and even religion. This intro fits perfectly with the more serious nature of the game, and gives the first time player a glimpse of what awaits them on the journey ahead.
