    back at it again for the second episode of GRAMMY MONTH! this is a series where I make a case for why one of the nominees for album of the year should or shouldn't take home the trophy. today we're taking about the elusive chanteuse herself, miss lana del rey - noted owner of 0 Grammys. she has been robbed several times before, most notably for NFR (aka Norman f*cking Rockwell), and in my opinion for Born to Die/Paradise as well. there are of course her other albums that didn't get a look in too: ultraviolence, honeymoon, lust for life, chemtrails over the country club, and blue banisters. BUT TODAY we're talking about the girl of the hour: did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean blvd, Lana's ninth studio album, critical darling, and maybe...a shoe in? for numerous awards at this year's album of the year. if she doesn't take home AOTY, will she get awarded for candy necklace or A&W?! tune in to hear my breakdown of this incredible album and Lana's grammy history too....

    Tunnel winning album of the year would make award show history. If she won it would show that the Grammys value artistry as much as popularity. Between A&W blowing up and Margaret making its way onto TikTok, I'd say Lana has quietly but greatly impacted the culture in 2023. She's also coming back into the public eye, which I love. It's about time Lana won a Grammy and one for Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard would be well deserved!

    Hey Zach! - curious about your opinion on Ocean BLVD’s track listing! I’m aware it was theorized right from the get-go to be listed in the sequence of a “tunnel-like” experience, having The Grants, title track, and Sweet beginning the entry into the tunnel - turning point at around A&W/the interludes, the pitch-black dead centre being Kintsugi & Fingertips - slowly leading the listener through the other side of the tunnel until another turning point at Let the Light In/Margaret - and then finishing off more playful & light in Fishtail, Peppers, & Taco Truck, and VB being her triumphant victory lap.. I’ve seen the album through this lens since release and it honestly doesn’t even seem too farfetched, given Lana’s capabilities and visions.. I think it adds a lot to the artistic excellence of the album (despite not being confirmed, necessarily) and sets her apart from the other nominees in this aspect!! iconic vid as always, Lanaologist

    i’ve dedicated myself to listening to each album nominated so i can properly formulate an opinion prior to the show… i started with ocean blvd because i was the most curious. this album had me so confused but feeling so interested and just….??? i’ve listened to a lot of it on repeat since. i haven’t listened to the rest of the nominations (aside from midnights ofc) but i have a hard time believing anything will live up to the way this album resonated with me. not a huge fan of the interludes & some of the tracks (margaret) i could maybe do without, but the album collectively is an EXPERIENCE and i would love to see lana get some credit for it.

    Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean blvd is so special because of the meaning connected to every song especially Margaret and a& w . I’m honestly so sad that she didn’t win any out of all five nominations. And that many artists won multiple awards for the same album/ song. I feel A&W should’ve won song of the year it explored topics like s a that makes all girls and women feel heard . She was so vulnerable in this album I’m so shocked she got like no recognition

    lana's influence on pop music is comparable to a silent revolution. if there was never a lana, there wouldve never been a billie, a lorde, or a melanie martinez. she brought that style of music into the zeitgeist, and i consider that enough of a cultural impact to warrant her being recognized by the grammys. its LONG overdue.

      @@GhostOfEvermoresure, but it would be laughable to suggest that lana’s music is inspired by taylor (her sonic influences are very different, and where taylor is best at writing with accuracy and specificity, lana’s music not only reflects her personal life but the whole culture)

      Lorde and Lana started in the same year, at least to get recognized or get lots of audience for Lana since she started way back. Lorde released her first EP back in 2012, she then later officially released it on March 2013. My point here is, there's a little influence that Lana influence Lorde or even inspired Lorde to get into music since they started in the mainstream almost in the same year.

    • @theswiftologist
      @theswiftologist  4 месяца назад +2

      Royals was literally a response to the opulence and visuals of Born to Die. She was watching Lana closely pre-Pure Heroine, and Lana still released BTD 10 months before the Love Club even came out. It's undeniable that Lana influenced Lorde.@@paduanicoc.7019

    this is such a great analysis! i even watched a second time with my sister so that we could discuss lol. lana is SO overdue for a grammy and it irritates me to this day that NFR didn’t win AOTY. NFR is my personal favorite album of all time, so i’m definitely biased, but i think that NFR is an absolute masterpiece and was pure genius on lana’s part. i agree with you that lana is always ahead of the time, which is why it seems that lana’s work is never appreciated like it should be until later on.
    i would love for Ocean Boulevard to win AOTY and i think it is super deserving, but with such a stacked lineup, i’m not sure what’s going to end up happening. imo, A&W is the obvious choice for song of the year. there are lots of very commercially popular songs in the running, but none of them come close to the complexity, lyricism, adventurousness, production quality, etc. of A&W. if A&W wins, it will really show that the grammy’s actually do pick winners based on the merits that they claim to judge by, rather than just popularity / commercial success. it will be very telling in terms of the future direction that the Grammy’s is heading toward.
    thanks for this video! it’s so interesting to hear different perspectives on this :)

I want "GUTS" to win Album Of The Year at the Grammys, but I'd be happy if Lana takes AOTY. It's a great album. Taylor Swift could also win. There's a lot of competition for AOTY this year.

    And not to compare to Taylor, she's still my favorite artist and still has my favorite songs.
    But for an album NFR just hits different. God, when I first listened to it on a whim I was practicing painting and I felt so in the zone, in the clouds, so out of body experience. It was a shitty night but because of it made my night better and if I would sum it up; eargasm.

      Edit: Or you could start with listening to some singles to get a sense of her, and then delve into the albums. Whatever you want :) It's a lot of music, so just take it at your pace, don't be overwhelmed about it.

I enjoyed guts and midnights a lot, but it doesn’t compare to tunnel and sos imo. Haven’t listened to the other nominees in full.
