Why Walmarts Are Becoming Hotbeds Of Crime

  • Crime is on the rise at Walmarts across the country. Why is this happening? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/...
"It’s not unusual for the department to send a van to transport all the criminals Ross arrests at this Walmart. The call log on the store stretches 126 pages, documenting more than 5,000 trips over the past five years. Last year police were called to the store and three other Tulsa Walmarts just under 2,000 times. By comparison, they were called to the city’s four Target stores about 300 times. Most of the calls to the northeast Supercenter were for shoplifting, but there’s no shortage of more serious crimes, including five armed robberies so far this year, a murder suspect who killed himself with a gunshot to the head in the parking lot last year, and, in 2014, a group of men who got into a parking lot shootout that killed one and seriously injured two others.
Police reports from dozens of stores suggest the number of petty crimes committed on Walmart properties nationwide this year will be in the hundreds of thousands. But people dashing out the door with merchandise is the least troubling part of Walmart’s crime problem. More than 200 violent crimes, including attempted kidnappings and multiple stabbings, shootings, and murders, have occurred at the nation’s 4,500 Walmarts this year, or about one a day, according to an analysis of media reports.”*

By the way, the employees who get assistance typically have to use that 'state money' at walmart so not only did walmart not have to pay the employee, but the employee gives the welfare check back to their employer. (As in shopping where they work) Walmart even issues a form of gift certificate rather than a check for employees who don't have bank accounts so they have to spend their entire check at walmart... kinda wish I had thought of that hahaha, beyond shady business practice that made them horrifically rich. Talk about getting paid hand over fist.. that's a serious business plan.

The funny thing is that so many of the Americans that go to WM think of themselves as church going patriotic conservative citizens but they are supporting a business that gets the vast majority of its non-food goods from Communist China. They also think Trump is going to bring back American manufacturing jobs when he himself outsourced jobs, used Chinese steel in his hotels, used undocumented aliens, cheated his employees and contractors. They also believe that if America helps manufacture a crisis in the Middle East Jesus will be forced to intervene and come back. We laugh at this when Muslims talk like this but pander to it in America.

Actually, in a lot of places, walmart's prices aren't that much lower than other stores. They typically get into a market with cut-throat prices to kill competition. But, before long, they bring the prices back up and you don't end up saving much, if any money.

I'm also boycotting Walmart. They have horrible practices overseas and the US. Overseas they've done everything from employing child workers to make their jeans, several lawsuits against them due to they refused to pay people the minimum wage in the countries the workers were working at (some of these countries had minimum wages as low as 40 cents a day), they've had problems of off shoring profits into tax havens to avoid paying taxes on over 78 billion dollars, they under pay the workers to the point that they need government assistance just to live, and their stores are undermanned making the few workers they have being in charge of larger areas.

This is one of the best comments I have read on RUclips. I find this video frustrating in many ways. I know the political bent of the creators. Still, they have a lot of facts here, which makes the topic thought provoking. And then, at about 8:16 or so, the woman decides to say "mindless working class Republicans..." Among other things, it was totally unnecessary and didn't further her argument in the least. Despite the fact that I do not see any comments by Nature Boy*, to whom you addressed your writings, I wanted to say "thank you." It was fun reading what you wrote.

That's sort of true. They can however, have more people watching, more cameras working (many are out of commission permanently due to lack of maintenance). They can have more people who are trained to monitor the security systems and keep the hardware working. To your point about getting physical, true is the fact they can't actually apprehend and detain people, however they CAN hire deputized law officers to do that work. All of these measures work very well in Las Vegas casinos. The problem with all of this is that it all costs REAL money, money that the Evil Empire wants for it's self. The final kicker behind all of this is a fact that is not even covered in this particular video. That being The Evil Empires practice of extracting sweetheart deals from these poor little towns in the form of huge tax abatements and zoning variations in exchange for building and staffing a store with a couple of hundred minimum wage jobs. In those cases the tiny little towns end up adding a couple thousand man hours to their policing burden (think two cops 2 calls a day plus paperwork vehicles etc and you get to 10 hours a day of extra work) Times 365 days a year comes to 3650 hours a year. That's two full time cops. Yea there is a robbery going on here, and The Evil Empire AIN'T the victim!

I work here at Walmart in Texas, and just today these dudes got caught stealing, also not too long ago like 3 months ago, high school students Did a beer run, which happens often. Walmart security is pretty low, if you are going to steal from this store, stay away from the cameras, security heavily relies on those to catch thefts. But be careful, once you get caught they won't be too kind hearted.

    • @sarahnorton5299
      @sarahnorton5299 8 лет назад

+William Postill yes. It probably has to do with price differences between men's and women's clothing. Women's clothes can cost 10x the price of men's clothes for the same amount of fabric used. I also think there are more pressures on women to have an outfit for everyday of the week or even month. Women are pressured to buy far more than men are and when they can't afford it they think they need to steal to have it. If it were the other way around Men would be stealing at far greater numbers. Women are pressured to buy makeup, nail polish, shoes, clothing, hair products, perfumes, feminine hygiene products, and much more. I'm not condoning women stealing I'm simply explaining why I think they do it more.

Walmart only cares about money not safety of their stores.

This is the way all working class jobs will be until the robots take over.
Lower the workforce as much as possible, have remaining workers fill in as many roles as possible, wait for everyone to adapt to new status quo, then repeat. All while automating as many tasks as possible (which will include management - a computer and tracking workers locations is all that takes really). Some sort of Socialism/Communism is the only hope in the future where "jobs" are all automated.

I was a merchandiser for a well known company that services Walmart. Maintaining a display near an entrance of the store during a 4 week period, I witnessed 3 separate incidents of mass shoplifting. Each scenario involved a shopping cart full of unbagged merchandise heading out the door. I reported the first 2 incidents each time. After the 2nd time, I asked why there was no one at the door. I was told "off the record" that management crunched the numbers and it was cheaper to take the loss, rather than pay someone to watch the door. I stopped reporting after that.

One day I went into a Walmart. A customer was arguing with the cashier about something (I didn't get the gist of It, they were speaking in a foreign language). As they talked, he was lightly slapping her in the race. And laughing. I was her next customer. She told me this was a common occurrence and she complained to management to no avail. Nowhere else have I ever seen a customer physicalmly attack an employee like that. That was the last time I shopped at a Walmart. I quite possibly won't again.

This is almost exactly what the Target in my town in Saint George, Utah is doing. They consolidated our security and lowered our hours to the point of us not being able to do our job efficiently then told us we were terrible employes for it even though we were the top store in our district for 5 years in a row until the changes that happened and we started to lose money on theft and it was our fault for not watching out for people stealing product. they also put most of their employees down to part time and told us we still have health benefits but we had to work full time to get it but it was near impossible to get full time if you had a family they wanted us to work in the afternoon i worked early morning shifts so i had time to take care of my family because my wife had to work to make up for the loss of money they would tell me i was a bad employ because i could not cover shifts an i would tell them i could not do some of the things they wanted me and my fellow employes to do because of the lack of hours it drained us. So me and the backroom team quite because of the verbal abuse and now they can't complete the job at all and have stated they wish we would have stayed. Well that's what the executives get for telling us we were bad employees the funny part is some of them worked with us then became executives and just became greedy. Like TYT said they only see money and the short term solutions not what's best in the long term we were even told by one of the bosses that did not agree with the way things were going that was what was going on. Companies like Target and Wal-mart are the worst Target is just better at hiding it than Wal-mart is.

Also it was nearly impossible to do the job of preventing theft, because you can't touch the customers or follow them. Yet I was always yelled at for not preventing loss.
Finally, I caught pneumonia working in front of the doors in the dead of winter. Management refused to take my doctor's note, claimed I had to go through some bogus process no one had told me about, and threatened to fire me because I was too sick to go to work.

Greeter's actually don't do much in the way of security. I worked at a Walmart for awhile, and the greeters would tell me that in many cases, even when they do catch someone shoplifting, they'll just book it straight out the door. Seeing as how most greeters are either old or mentally/physically handicapped individuals (sometimes temporarily handicapped, in the case of this guy I knew in loading who had broken his leg), they can't exactly run after said shoplifters.

I interviewed Walmart Security honchos for a college class report. Walmart tolerates 11% annual loss on inventory screened in compared against what gets paid for (tracked by barcodes at the register). Walmart refrains from calling the police on shoplifters because the police are understaffed and the police resent being Walmart security funded by the taxpayer. Walmart needs to pay for their own security... which they don't. Walmart pays for insurance to cover the 11% loss... (insurance that honest paying customers subsidize). What Walmart does do is bust their employees for theft. Walmart prosecutes employees to the full extent of the law because they want to scare other employees into being honest. The Walmart Security honchos I interviewed stated privately that they HATE how Walmart keeps trimming their ranks and making the job of stopping shoplifters impossible. Walmart management is despicable. And very short-sighted. Walmart invites problems, because rats travel in packs and they tell each other where the easy pickings are. Walmart has made itself into a target. Pun intended.

Usually don't care for the histrionics when presenting news stories, but almost everything they described has occurred at my local Walmart. In many places, WM parking lots are danger zones especially for elderly or distracted shoppers deemed easy targets by criminals . My local store used to be open 24hours but changed to midnight closing due to shoplifting. Tens of thousands of dollars of inventory stolen annually. Thieves would fill up shopping carts and run them out the door with no fear of being caught. The store does have security guards but they are unarmed and in their 70s. What are they going to do? Local police and sheriffs' deputies are now a regular presence. The store does have greeters though as well as well as a fair number of above average workers who deserve better.

If you don't like it don't shop at Walmart. Walmart has petitioned to increase minimum wage, let's talk about that.

One more point....Everything that is stolen now becomes a loss / tax write off for Walmart. Therefore they don't really lose anything in the theft.

I smartly returned to Los Angeles, California from Tampa, Florida last year where I stupidly went to assist a very sick friend of mine. Tampa is a pretty beautiful place if one can stand the humidity and bugs but this Walmart situation was even being complained about by city and town councils since the cost of local police protection and action actually cost these areas more in money than local Walmarts were generating in sales tax dollars. Lesson learned is that it's really a no win situation and no one wins here. It's just that the average uninformed consumer doesn't do the research to find out where all of those low cost items actually come form and why. Another thing, my friend told me that food totals would be less in Florida? Wrong! They are lower here in California. Citrus, for instance, is consistently of much higher quality and lower cost than in the so-called "Sunshine State" which is quickly sinking due to global warming. We already have operational desalination plants in this state and we will probably have to resort to purified seawater anyways since the leaders in the mid-west and south are in deep denial about this scientific fact.

I used to work on the Wal Mart truck crew in Elko, Nevada. They would have us play the role of security by making us chase off union reps and follow suspected shoplifters. They shuffled out managers every month or so. I've never seen turnover like that anywhere else. The police were there constantly.

The checkout lines and some Walmarts are insane because they always have too few cashiers working. The self checkouts are often broken.

I live near both a Walmart and a legal recreational marijuana dispensary. There has been absolutely no problems with the marijuana dispensary. Now Walmart, that place is scary. I went there one day because I wanted to make pierogis and didn't have potatoes, and noticed that they now have security tags on the baskets because people kept walking out of the store with them without paying. If you walk out of a story with a basket, an alarm will go off. It's pretty bad if you have to put screaming alarm tags on the baskets.
