There's plenty of videos going around with CHEAP rent, but for dungeon looking apartments with no windows which bear a closer resemblance to a jail cell than somewhere you'd actually wanna live!
If you're a backpacker looking for a $5 per night hostel dorm, then this video isn't for you! But if you're a digital nomad, who appreciates a comfortable, spacious place whilst not breaking the bank - then this is for you!
In this video I'm taking you through a real time search of the main platforms I use for short term (1 to 3 month rentals) in Medellin, Colombia.
I'll be starting with the main tourist areas and venturing out to some areas you might not have heard of, but wish had earlier! I'm gonna explain a bit about each area that I'm recommending, whilst also showing you some places under $500 a month where I'd recommend staying.

Greetings from Puerto Rico! Excellent video. Extremely useful information. Thinking seriously about moving to Medellin. You gave me a great perspective and pointed me to the right direction. Infinite Blessings!!!!! ✌️♥️🙏🇵🇷
Glad it was helpful! 😊
My problem with most of the bloggers on YT is that they continually compare prices in Columbia with that of the US. Thats like comparing the share price of Acme Inc with that of Google and then raving on about how cheap Acme Inc is.🙄
I appreciate your video, I've learned much more from it than the 5 other videos on Columbia Ive watched combined. Definitely a subscribe!
Glad ya found it useful John!
Great guide thank you for creating this video.
Glad you enjoyed it mate! 👍🏾😁
Thank you! Excellent, informative video man!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like the way you explain
easy to understand understand and understand
very helpful
When you speak Spanish is also easy to understand and learn from you
thank you for you video
Glad you enjoyed it Ambar 😊!
Excellent tips. I’m moving out there in July and just putting my feelers out. I think a week is good.
After a week you'll definitely wanna stay longer haha good luck with the trip mate!
Going just for a room can also be an option, for less money you can get a better shared apartment, plus the support of a local, which can be invaluable..
Booked for 170 Euro a room in a spacious and bright apartment near the university. The host is also in IT which will push me further, I'm really excited.
Yes - very true - this video was geared towards a person who might want a bit more privacy to work etc. but if you don't mind sharing your house with someone else - I think you can knock the price down below $200 a month for sure. Which university are you staying near? UPB?
@@AKJoel Ah there are more. Near Universidad de Antioquia.
Something completely different, but
do you know if "border hopping" is actually possible, to get a fast new visa?
Nowhere I found experience on this. And many countries limit it nowadays.
@@felixg.6493 I heard or plenty of people leaving to Panama or Peru for a week and coming back to reset their visas. I'm actually doing the same in July, but 3 weeks in Mexico.
My last trip to Medellin I stayed in Belen. It's a fantastic area and it forced me to learn and use the Metro transport system. Between train and bus it gets you within a few blocks of wherever you want to go. How about a video on public transport in Medellin?
Noted Tim! Lemme think about how to do that 👍🏾 & Belen is my personal favourite area in all of Medellin!
This is the best video you’ve done
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I watched your entire video and you make some very salient points. We absolutely must be near the metro, restaurants, shopping, drug stores, etc. After a brief search, we found a very clean high rise in La Candelaria with a killer 19th floor view and a good price. Medellín is amazing, to say the least.
Nice - glad you found an awesome place!! Enjoy Medellin!
How much ? no good saying good price. 🤷♂
I enjoy Joel's' sense of humor.
Glad you enjoyed it Brian!
Where are the nice furnished condos for $200 usd per month?
That doesn't exist anymore lol
Very informative. Best believe I'm applying the same filters. El poblado is a desert 🏜 for that budget.
Good luck with the search bro! Definitely get out of Poblado!
Crazy prices in Poblado!!! I thought Medellin was cheap, yikes!! Sticker shock. SE Asia is much cheaper.
What's monthly rental in a nice place cost in SE Asia these days? I haven't been there since 2016
❤❤ thanks. Will need a place Já/Feb. For I senior lady .
FYI prices have risen considerably since this video was made almost 12 months ago.
30 minute video about browsing on Airbnb is crazy
I have another one coming, get excited! Haha
Sabaneta is quite hilly in places and there are a significant number of new builds in those areas. If you don't feel like daily hikes, you might want to take that into consideration. Parque Sabaneta and the three metro stops are good references if you are looking for a place. Sabaneta metro station is about 10 minute walk from Parque Sabaneta.
Or you can just take an Uber from your place to wherever you wanna go to avoid the hikes, right?
@@AKJoel Good thinking. I like to walk when I can.
Thanks!
Thanks mate, appreciate it!
Hello Joel. Thank you for the tips. I'm going to Medellin in early February to see my gf. I'm planning on moving to Medellin later this year. I'm looking at Envigado or Itagui.
I've heard Itagui can be dangerous, Envigado is the better option 👍🏾 enjoy!
I believe that people here in Colombia put a minimum of a month on their places and put a ridiculous price on it. if it gets a rented then they move with a family member or rent a room for next to nothing. many of them never get rented but when other renters see these prices, everything ends up getting raised in that area.
@@jimmyjohnson7883 this is what I meant by "dungeons with a mattress on the floor and no windows for $800 a month" 😂
I also find that if you search for dates last minute you can get a deal
I'll look into that next time! Cheers!
That tiny 570 USD studio is literally 700$ now, 4 months later ... 🤦♂️
not going to Medellín..
Yeah mate - it's absolutely skyrocketed the past 6 months! For this reason I made another video "Medellin under $1000" which I'll be releasing this week.
You said to not book a new place, would you still have the same opinion if the place is from a superhost?
Yeah the only exception is that if they have other well reviewed properties
@@AKJoel I figured, Thanks!
Is everything through Airbnb, how about apartment to live in long term
That's a longer and more difficult process - check out this video.
ruclips.net/video/dJMn-noZ9CE/видео.html
@@AKJoel my wife is Colombian, and her mom lives in Colombia. Would that help to shorten the process or make it easier. How long is the process?
If they speak Spanish then yes it's much easier. Just contact local real estate agents and set up viewings through them - if you want a ready made list of 20+ agents we've already contacted you can get that here.

Hey Joel, I am from Canada and I am in Santa Marta and I am hoping to get a monthly rental for 2 or 3 months, maybe we'll get together? Namaste 🙏
Enjoy my friend! I'm not a fan of Santa Marta, too quiet for me!
You can rent a 2 bedroom, 2 bath nice apartment, in Mexico City, in the nice areas for less that 1k a month on Airbnb. Medellin, Colombia rentals are SO overpriced
Hey Travis,
I just looked at thpse exact search parameters in Roma Norte & Condesa, as I'm staying in Mexico City for a while in March - but everything I found was $400+ per week! Where do you find the spots for $1k a month?
I got mine on Airbnb
But I am only searching a month out.
@@crvd1918 yes they are lol . I will go where ever I want, as always. And i ain't broke like you punk
There must be other options other than Air BNB or VRBO to get deals. Local Realtors maybe?
There's endless complications with them, not to mention scams all over the place. Real estate companies also usually only rent out for 6 months or longer (in some cases 3 months.)
For month by month stays I believe there aren't any other options.
@@AKJoel Thanks.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
my 1st advice; learn Spanish 2nd advice; do all searches in Spanish. thousands are saved!!!!!
do you mean that if you search in Airbnb in Spanish the prices are cheaper?
hi, Joel, send your instagram link, i am coming to Medellin to study Spanish.......
Hey Mate, I don't really use Instagram - only for business enquiries - if you need to book a consultation feel free to message me and my social media manager will sort you out! My handle is @akjoel.films
