Trigonometry on Khan Academy: Big, fancy word, right? Don't be fooled. Looking at the prefix, tri-, you could probably assume that trigonometry ("trig" as it's sometimes called) has something to do with triangles. You would be right! Trig is the study of the properties of triangles. Why is it important? It's used in measuring precise distances, particularly in industries like satellite systems and sciences like astronomy. It's not only space, however. Trig is present in architecture and music, too. Now you may wonder...how is knowing the measurement and properties of triangles relevant to music?? THAT is a great question. Maybe you'll learn the answer from us in these tutorials!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Its amazing i am a 10 grade dropout that made C's, D's and F's in math, i could never retain what teachers where trying to teach in school with chalk bored methods, it would take me weeks to drill much more basic mathematics than this into my head using typical teaching methods but i pretty much retained and understand everything in this video in 9 minutes at worst watching it 1-2 more times would be perfect. Its amazing with videos like this i could learn everything from 1st-12th grade and on into collage level in less than a year by these standards i only wish i was about 10 years ahead so i could have had access to this stuff when i needed it most, textbooks and teachers did not cut it for me all i needed was the ability to have problems visualized in front of me in a clean simple manner at a pace i can handle with the ability to pause, rewind as i please. And i know i must not be the only person that was like myself that has found this way to be ten times more effective.

1.) Is it correct you only use these in generalizations, or is something else possible?
2.) Can you ever have an improper fraction or a mixed number?
3.) What would be the Adjacent over Opposite side length be called?
4.) Why is the Hypotenuse never a numberator, but always a denominator?
5.) Would a possible response to number 4 be 'The Pythagorean Theorem is A^2+B^2=H^2, which states the Hypotenuse is the longest side'?

I love learning but I (almost) hate school. I've found Khan Academy to be much better than schools because unlike schools it:
    1. Doesn't make learning a forced and boring task but instead makes learning fun and interesting.
    2. Gives you a feeling of freedom over your education, no forced times and always available.
    3. Doesn't always push you further but gives you time to go back and relearn what you've forgotten.
    4. Allows you to learn what you want and doesn't force subjects onto you.
4.5. Is available for basically everyone with access to internet, no matter your age or where you live.
I have overall learnt more from schools, met more friends thanks to schools, received free food from schools and have gotten other things thanks to schools and for all those things I am thankful. If however you were to compare the amount of time I've spent at school and at Khan academy and then compare the ambition and knowledge I've received for each subject from them Khan academy is a much better alternative for my learning.

The sin function is to be used with the angles inside the triangle, not the sides. Also, your calculator will probably calculate the ratio of the sides to give you the decimal value of what that ratio/fraction would be. To get a fraction from a TI-83 or similar calculator. press MATH-->ENTER-->ENTER.

why do we even have to learn this at school?!

  • @ArnavBarbaad

Look at it this way:- Once you define the type of triangle, say 90 degree or 20 degree or whatever, you have fixed one angle. Now once you take one angle as theta, you have fixed ALL THREE ANGLES. Ie. now all such triangles in the world will be similar, and hence the ratio of their sides would be constant.
There is nothing mystical about 90 degree triangles more than that they are a lot more handy in engineering

This is the video that made me LOVE Trig, well math in general for the whole site. KhanAcademy is an amazing site. With other teachers I get the feeling that they just do not care at all. I do not get that feeling here. Great Stuff.

The best mnemonics for remembering these trigonometric ratios is:
    Some People have
    Curly Brown hair
    Through Proper brushing
Here the first letters of each phrase show the names of trigonometric ratios; sin, cos, tan
While the second and third letters of start show the sides of triangle; like first one perpendicular/hypotenuse
Second one base/ hypotenuse and third one is perpendicular/ base

I've got three more questions. If you could answer them all, that'd be great.
6.) Could the angle you generalize be the right angle?
7.) If so, for number six, if it's true, then would the opposite and the Hypotenuse be one and the same?
8.) If so, for number six and seven, if they're true, then how would you determine what the Adjacent is?

I'm sorry, when you said "pneumonic" in the video it really bothered me because it's spelled "mnemonic" and I don't see where you could have gotten the "u" sound from. Pneumonic means relating to pneumonia.

Some people have: sin=perpendicular by hypotenuese
Curly brown hair: cos=base by hypotenuese
Through proper brushing: tan=perpendicular by base.
