Luxury beliefs are an elite instrument to distinguish themselves. If you want to be part of the club, you have to suspend your disbelief of, for example, men being able to transform into women.

4.22 Many who have low economic value often want nothing to do with influence and control of people, as their experiences of being controlled by others is a negative experience. Most of them just want to be left alone. I think your assumption that poor people wanting power and influence in mis-informed. With respect Rob (apart from that; great banter)

People "at the bottom" still want status and still want it through overt displays of materialism. That's why people in urban ghettos waste a ton of money on Tmberland boots for their newborn and Louis Vitton bags etc.

I think that it is an important part of a luxury belief that it inflict cost on a lower class and this is how it is luxurious: the piores cannot believe in these things, because they cannot pay for these things, like electric cars, expensive oil, organic food and so on. Thank you very much!

I don’t - Never attribute malice to what can be explained with sheer stupidity or ignorance.
It’s not that rich people want a cost inflicted on poors, it’s that they don’t care. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference.
Poors are far more aware of what it looks like to be rich than the rich understand what it looks and feels like to be poor.

The ruling upper classes have always had "luxury beliefs". Since the year Dot. Some of them can be regarded as a positive contribution to society. It depends on how practical it would have been to adopt them in regard to the rest of the population.

I quite like Rob’s basic conceptual framework here but he could do a better job at describing what he considers to be the “upper classes” & “lower classes.” Veblen (who Henderson likes to quote) was focussed primarily on the economic distinctions between the ordinary working class & Fat cat robber Barton’s. Henderson seems to be focusing more on hybridized economic-cultural elites.

You’ve got to give back to get out of here
What remains of your culture now little boy blue
did you give back the treasure you stole
did the demons within set you free from your sin
but deny you the key to your soul
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
there is only one path you must choose
did Marie Antoinette with her last cigarette declare
“Give the poor beggar my shoes!”
Are you paying the price for redemption
is there more to be gained than is lost
did you sign your confession not learning your lesson
and end up just counting the cost
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
there is only one path you must find
did the first man in space feel a bit out of place
when he thought that they’d left him behind
Now you’ve got to be blind not to notice
that the worlds not the way that it seems
and if all you can do is just think about you
then you’re too busy living your dreams
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
this is only one moment in time
could Houdini escape without being awake
to the forces by which he was tied
You’ve got to give back to get out of here
there is only one path you will need
take the road straight ahead and don’t ever forget
that you don’t have to win to succeed
