I drive a 1995 Geo Prizm that I bought in 2010 for $1600, when it had around 142k miles on the odometer. It's now 2021 and coming up on 242k. This car has survived years of mechanical neglect, through financially leaner times in my life... survived my kids being little, who nearly destroyed the interior... survived me, doing stupid things to it/with it... survived the many years outside taking their toll on the exterior... while to date only costing me around $4k combining the price of the car AND parts/maintenance, which I mostly do myself (but I have delegated a couple of things to a mechanic). This car has NEVER failed me. NOT ONCE. Meanwhile, I see friends and family occasionally pour money approaching my entire cost of ownership of this thing into keeping vehicles on the road that are 1/3 its age. Back in the day I bought this car out of raw necessity, survival - but now I find myself not wanting to let it go. I just got done giving it a tune up last weekend and sometimes I think about going further by repainting it, fixing up the interior and eventually replacing the engine when someday it blows up (300k+ miles? Who knows!) because it's kinda beautiful in its durable simplicity.
When these are well maintained and not pushed too hard the 4AFE and related 7AFE(1.8) can last 500,000 miles, then can be overhauled and go another 250,000 miles. The 5 speed manual is more durable for those who can handle the stick shift and clutch. There are still enough of them around that you can find body and trim parts for cheap. I think they still look pretty good, but that's me.
@@timothykeith1367 Yeah, I think they look good too. Mine is an automatic. But at least I can say that not long after I got it (recap... 11 years, 100k miles ago) I thought the transmission was leaking fluid, turns out it was only the pan gasket needing to be replaced but in the process I drained it (as much as you can taking the pan off, which is a little over halfway) and filled it back up with really fancy Lucas transmissions fluid. That stuff has helped all of the older cars I've put it in, even one that had even started shifting pretty badly, none have died from a transmission failure. Maybe having done that preventatively on the Prizm will buy me a couple extra years, who knows.
@@anodyne777 This was the golden age of Japanese cars. The '90s Lexus cars are great too. In the 2000s, I think most vehicles became more complicated and require more maintenance. When the owners skip oil changes now and then the cars may experience sludge problems and sticking rings etc. The cast iron block 4AFE/7AFE is a more lazy engine and it survives some neglect much better.
Thank you! I owned a 1995 Prizm and it was one of my favorite cars- and I have owned (too) many in my life. When I bought mine, back in 19996, the car had one owner and around 24,000 miles on her. I drove it for five years. It was comfortable, smooth-riding and handled fine. I never got stuck in the snow with all-season tires, and I somehow got 34 mpg with a three-speed automatic. Also, the visibility was amazing- today's cars are squeezing the glass lower and lower, sacrificing driver view. The "performance" edition was the LSi. And I love those taillights! By the way, since Geo was 90% Toyota and sold by Chevy, the companies that built it do still exist, technically. If you want to review cars from companies that are no more, get a hold of a Saturn. That company was a GM division but their cars were truly made by Saturn with many differences from other GM products. Peace.
@@billrobsham697 If you meant "rarely hit interstate speeds" that would not be the case. I got that great fuel economy doing 55-65 on open highways. Around town it was good but of course, not that good, maybe 20 MPG. Be well.
My very first car was a 95 Prizm!!!! Best car I've ever driven, easily. Was easy to maneuver, drove smoothly, and had nice brakes. I wish that cars like that were more common.
Just to correct the record, the "LSi" was not a performance model. It was the more upscale luxury model. I know this because i own one. The "LSi" gave you a nicer interior and more standard equipment but nothing sportier was included. Mine is a LSi with the base 1.6 liter and a 3 speed auto so not all LSi's gave you the larger engine either. The LSi was the equivilent of the Toyota Corolla LE model. Again NOT sporty.
My favorite part of this Corolla is the sagging headliner. Only a Corolla made by a domestic carmaker would include GM's patented sagging headliner option.
My 96 Prizm got a new paint job in 2014, looks good and still runs strong. Yeah it’s noisy and has crazy body roll but these old cars have fantastic visibility 😉. You don’t feel like you’re riding in a tank. Will be passing it on to my 17 year old soon and he’s excited, lol. Great review.
I just picked up a spotless '95 Geo Prizm Lsi with 31,000 miles and a full maintenance log at a charity auction for $1,400. At first I was worried that it is a bad car, but these reviews make me feel a lot better.
Still going strong. 52,000 miles and all I've had to do is new tires, brakes, oil change, and a new serpentine belt. Otherwise, no issues whatsoever. Great car, not flashy or fast, but it always starts up and gets me where I need to go. Haven't had any issues in the Great Lakes winters here either.
The Geo Prizm is basically an American version of the Toyota Sprinter which was the sporty version of the Toyota Corolla. I like how the previous owner got tired of the saggy headliner and instead of getting it fixed they decided to cut a hole on the drivers side. Great review Zack!
I remember seeing quite a fair bit of these on the road 10+ years ago. It's a shame the partnership between Toyota and GM didn't manage to go further, this era of Chevrolet could've really benefited from some of Toyota's build quality and reliability (at least in terms of GM's basic economy cars). Compare this to something like a Corsica and I don't think there's really much comparison- as much as I might appreciate the Corsica for what it is, this is a vastly better automobile- both when new, and still today. Awesome video!
There's a Chevy/Geo tracker club in my town in Florida and bro they are tricked out like balls! Porta Rican guy's gotta big thing for them in my town and they got them looking amazing!
That model in this video is the base model Prizm. I own a 1994 Geo Prizm LSi which was the upscale trim. The interior was a nicer two tone design and offered more ammenties such as power windows, door locks, mirrors and other options. The tachometer was a stand alone option that you could get on either manual transmissions or automatic cars - base or LSi. There was even a luxury option group that gave you leather seats and a power moonroof. Yes you heard me right. Those are so rare but i have seen them out in the wild.
Geo also made a Geo Storm 2 door coupe. The Geo Metro came in 3cyl & 4cyl engine. I believe the 4 cylinder started in 1995. There was also a 2 door convertible model.
I actually like the look of the Geo Prism over its Corolla counterpart. I think the styling cues have aged better than the Corolla's more conservative cues. I wish the owner of this Prism could've taken some time to clean the interior up a little bit. It's pretty nasty inside! I wish simple basic cars like this could still be made today. There's no reason why cars have to have infotainment or "smart" cruise control as long as they have all the modern day basic safety systems.
This is my only car. I have been driving it for 13 years and in 5 different states that I lived in. The brakes are the most expensive repair. I once had to have the power steering fixed also, but way better then having to buy another car.
I currently have a 1995 Geo and surprisingly it runs really well for it's age! And the gas mileage! I'm getting roughly 30-32MPG and that's awesome with the way gas prices are right now. It's an 11 gallon tank and I can get 300+ miles on a single tank which is really nice. It's a 1.6 liter engine like the one features. 5 speed. Yeah, it's a nice little car. My roof lining is practically gone, the sound system is nonexistent (stereo is gone so I have a large gaping hole under the temperature control area). Speakers are gone. But I blame that on the previous owner. Luckily, my bluetooth speaker works nice. The AC does not work. It needs a compressor but I really don't need one to be honest. Open windows works fine for me and I wouldn't want to bog down the motor with an AC compressor anyway. Also, the one you have here is the same color as mine except mine has faded badly.
It is 2022 I’m native Costa Rica with 10 years living in USA I’m actually driving a 1993 Geo Prizm with 160K miles automatic and my car is great still runs better that a lot of early 2000’s and in my country there are tons of trackers and people actually prefer them over CRV snd rav4 engine and transmission are way better , and don’t forget about the geo Storm

Couldn't hear a word you said as I have no sound. lol but this car is nice. I had one and it was very reliable and nicer than a Corolla in terms of appearance. Nobody makes styled wheels anymore. These are nice. Too bad they are 30 years old and hard to find. Like most Japanese 90's cars they still look modern even 30 years later.
I have one and I have for more of 20 years in my hands I care a lot, my geo prizm look like a new car everything is original is a good car I hope to have for more time.

aww shit memories! The closest i’ve come to jail was as a passenger in one of these. Went to go buy weed from a shady connect, walked into a stake out, the only reason I avoided jail was A) was in community college student gov at the time (as were a couple of others in the car) and B) the shady connect had a pocket full of pills and dimed out the guy who’s house it was and they didn’t need me (or my my student gov friends) anymore. Honestly it probably wouldn’t have been more than a fine (probably) but it scared the shit out of me, and one of my friends had to lay low for a while till the guy who got raided peoples figured out who narced. When you listed the features of the steering wheel you missed the fundamental improvement this car had over the previous years - the airbags. Huge leap into modern age.
Wow this must have been the really base model because the prizm I had was an LSi and it had power everything leather seats sunroof keyless entry and a CD and cassette player
you forgot the geo storm. why are these cars so great even today? gas mileage. my 95 with a 1.6 manual got up to 42 mpg, my current 1995 with a 1.8 auto gets 38 hwy and both cars in the 250k to 300k range. these cars are almost unstoppable, 300k miles before a rebuild is necessary most likely to oil consumption but otherwise just gas and go.
its still a toyota though, specifically the sprinter (not sold by toyota in the us) which uses different styling, but go under the hood, its a toyota engine. also geo was a brand specifically made to sell japanese imports
Mnie przypadło w zaszczycie w wieku 40 lat przejąć ,,Klejnot Rodzinny" w postaci GEO PRIZM (prawdopodobnie jedyne Prizm w Polsce... Albo w Europie...🤔😜) Pozdrawiam Sarah
Me too 😎 The car was brought to Poland in '95 by my dad from Chicago, who worked there for 2 years (1.6, 5-speed manual, 107,000 miles !!! in 2022 - in museum condition, as if GM left the factory yesterday 🙂). And despite the fact that after 27 years, Dad decided to buy the Suzuki SX-4 S-Cross Hibrid 2022 and now closed another car in the garage 🙂 for 27 years😂😂😂. At the age of 40, it was my honor to take over the "Family Jewel" in the form of GEO PRIZM (probably the only Prizm in Poland ... Or in Europe ... 🤔😜) Regards Sarah
I had a '94 corolla 5spd as a work car years ago. It ended up being my EVERYTHING car because it was so good. People were constantly asking me if I wanted to sell it and I was like good God NO! Then I started seeing a few prizm's up for grabs and would tell those same people to buy one. They just laughed and said "those things are JUNK" not knowing that it was actually a rebadged corolla...smh. It was literally the same thing with the '04 Saturn vue V6. It was literally a Honda Pilot, but people called them junk as well. Seems like every foreign manufacture that gm partnered with ended up getting the boot. They're truly not interested in quality. It's all about flipping numbers for them.
Ahh yes, the Chevy Corolla.
Better than the Toyota Cavalier offered in Japan which not surprisingly did not sell all that much. But I think it was neat having a JDM cavalier.
But the geos are Reliable
You can put a toyota corola bumper front (Literally)
Good joke
I drove one and it was fun asf. Reminded me a lot of the fiat we have!

Wow this must have been the really base model because the prizm I had was an LSi and it had power everything leather seats sunroof keyless entry and a CD and cassette player
Hi. I’m in Ghana and I have a Geo prism from 1996
you forgot the geo storm. why are these cars so great even today? gas mileage. my 95 with a 1.6 manual got up to 42 mpg, my current 1995 with a 1.8 auto gets 38 hwy and both cars in the 250k to 300k range. these cars are almost unstoppable, 300k miles before a rebuild is necessary most likely to oil consumption but otherwise just gas and go.
Love your vids bro subbed
The company who build the Prizm is called NUMMI
What size tires does it need
The Corolla you showed and referenced as a 93, is actually a 98-00 model.
it's not a rebadge. Look closely, the share zero body panels. GEO even put the aircraft type doors, where toyota used the older style.
its still a toyota though, specifically the sprinter (not sold by toyota in the us) which uses different styling, but go under the hood, its a toyota engine. also geo was a brand specifically made to sell japanese imports
I loved my Geo Prizm.
Mnie przypadło w zaszczycie w wieku 40 lat przejąć ,,Klejnot Rodzinny" w postaci GEO PRIZM
(prawdopodobnie jedyne Prizm w Polsce...
Albo w Europie...🤔😜)
Pozdrawiam Sarah
Sorry, you probably don't understand Polish 🇵🇱, my mistake, there is also English ... 😉
I need a 97 rear let door.
Rust likes it too
Mine went 265k mi until a Hummer H2 rearended me and he buckled the roof and rear quarter panels and opened the trunk permanently
@6:20 lol stopped himself from saying a body
the Corolla that you showed minute 1:53 it is NOT a 1993 Corolla, that's a 1999 Corolla model
i had a 1989 geo storm
damn you got a fresh shave for this car
This is the car a high school drop out would drive while selling weed behind the local walmart at 2 am.

It’s sad that Americans don’t get weird brands like Fiat (the full lineup) or Suzuki. They’d enjoy the weirdness.
Better than the Adam Corolla 🤣
This is the Chevy Version of that car.. Geo is the Predecessor To Saturn
My auto 95 Prizm has a tach!! Lol
i own this car now... like literally the car in the video lol the gene reed (idk who that is) sticker is still there
Thats wild! Where did you get it? This car was sent to auction.
