Here is some advice from a mechanical engineer who was formerly an ASE mechanic on mostly GM trucks... Carry spare parts like: fuses, serpentine belt, thermostat, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, oil cooler hoses, vent hose, fuel hose (3/8" and/or 1/4"), accordion radiator hose (can be temporarily used for either), fuel pump (pricey but worth it), and enough oils/chemicals to refill everything on the truck. I would get a tool kit with 8,10,13,14,15,18, and 21mm sockets/wrenches as well as other typical tools like screwdrivers and pliers. I would also recommend a flashlight that mounts to your head as these are great for working on something in the dark on the side of the road when you need both hands free.
I have an 05 2500HD with a Hallmark pop up that I plan to take out this summer and I will be taking all that and then some!

I just learned that “American” trucks use metic fasteners now. Crazy! It helps to keep the tool kit smaller too!

Cheap roadside self insurance. Little tire patch kit and a small compressor can get you back to the road. Duct tape , bailing wire, fuse kit, jb weld. You can't prepared for everything but you will be surprised how happy you are to have the little tool kit that saves you from sitting for a week waiting for help. All part of the adventure !!!!

Cat...that was just a little hiccup...obviously chk all fluids and visually inspect everything periodically....you may find a problem b4 it leaves you along the road....be aware of anything odd, noises, vibrations etc. You did great....hows those brake pads & shoes...u-joints....run your 4wheel dr. occasionally (few miles)...stay safe lookin forward to next adv. !!

I picked up a 750A jump starter power bank- kit that charges on usb or through the rig's lighter plug. It's only about 6.5" long by 3" wide, has flash and hazard lights built in. A decent (Innova 3100) OBD code reader, mostly for peace-of-mind as I'm no mechanic, but at least it tells me where fuses might have blown under the hood. I picked up a small ratchet/socket set. Also a portable compressor just to inflate tires. At least it takes the consternation out of owning a second hand vehicle.

  • @tomclarke2722
    @tomclarke2722 5 лет назад +15

You may already have this covered...but bringing up just in case. The jack that came with the truck may not be enough to lift weight of truck plus camper to fix/change a flat tire. I picked up a bottle jack (maybe $40) at a auto parts store for my rig. Also carry a few pieces of wood to place bottle jack on if a sandy/soft surface. Glad to hear all worked out well for you.

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures Theres lots of things yu can do Cat....remember youtube is a virtual wealth of knowledge for advice or tutorials....did you have your truck "trip inspected" after you bought it....an honest mechanic is a godsend...a good inspection (on the rack) might save some headaches on the road....just a thought....have fun !!!

Catherine, bad or weird sounds coming from your vehicle only go away once the problem has completely failed or you stop and check and fix immediately. There are certain products you need to carry when on the road. JB weld 2 part glue/weld,JB weld putty, duct tape and or poly tape, and as you now know extra oils and stop leak type fluids to help get you down the road. I hope you take the time and visit one of your auto shops and look into purchasing these products so you won't find yourself stranded somewhere. Happy travels!!

Like you said always carry fluids. Since your gonna be on the road it's also a good idea to put on all new belts & hoses. install a tire pressure monitor
system. The brake system is gonna see a lot action with the added weight , all new fluid is required too. Happy Trails

When I lived in my rig, I always carried spare parts, tools , etc...you kinda learn what matters over time and you start to understand real fast that if you can't move your home, you're in trouble. Also, having a bike or small motor bike can be very handy as a back up vehicle of sorts.

Things just wear over time,no big deal. You handled it perfectly and it will be campfire chat in future years. Remember you have followers and Patreons all over in case you should need assistance. Here's another one of my tips: if you have trouble leveling the rig with blocks dig a shallow hole on the opposite side. Sometimes it is easier. Be safe and enjoy!

Glad you got it fixed. A quick note anytime you park it only takes a few seconds to look for leaks before continuing especially in the area under the engine. Of course this is a lot easier on asphalt or concrete. Another thing that I do is carry extra air and fuel filters. Especially when traveling in mountains and engine performance is not what it should be it might be a filter. Filters do become clogged. Especially fuel.

A lot of chevys at this age of life have a pressurized house that is hydraulically crimped. It tends to leak due to higher pressure. Hoses can be 40 bucks average. The low/non pressurized hose is cheaper and not as likely to leak. Some have o rings with slow leak ,very minimal. Good luck!

There's no need for that whatsoever. She has a HD truck. It's a diesel and 2500 and it doesn't even know that little camper is sitting on it. She's not flexing those springs anywhere near capacity.

Glenn S exactly. I had a Toyota Tacoma with a slide in Travel lite camper and I installed some Firestone rear air bags and boom my ride was smooth as hell... you’re absolutely right, you need to check the weight of the camper with all that gear if you’re into paragliding or mountain biking or rover rafting the weight gets up there 🍻😂 🤙

Sailors depend on their engine working when the wind dies down and having a rigorous maintenance program prior to every departure minimizes on surprises that leave you adrift. Check your fluids, hoses and belts and change them religiously as suggested. Good luck and happy hiking soon.

Yes not too serious.....gotta change the oil on time and check those fluids. I have a '93 Ford F150 and I know it very well....it has been great.....just basic repairs like new brakes....fuel pumps....belts..some hoses....new starter....but the engine runs awesome from all the oil changes....and fluid levels kept up. Glad to hear it worked out for you and hope you have Triple A just in case because an occasional tow is always possible......some parts just wear out eventually.

Thank you Mike. How often do you recommend I change the oil in this kind of truck? I did upgrade my AAA for RV towing and 100 miles, but I may even upgrade to 200 miles.

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures .....I change my oil every 3000 miles like clockwork.....I bought my truck new in '93 and it has been awesome....has major giddy up when I need it...does very well in the Sierra too....I have also had a few used 2nd vehicles too but my truck just keeps on going strong lol. .I will have to check on your truck model but changing the oil every 3000 miles is fairly standard.....if you have your truck's service records look them over too....very important ...your truck engine can last you for years and years with proper maintenance.....yes 200 miles towing is a good package to have.....make sure your belts are OK too.....I think you are going to do good with your rig....that is your baby so look after her and treat her great!!!

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures Just read that Chevy trucks have an Oil Life System (OLS) which monitors everything from climate..driving habits etc...it said you can go approximately 7000 to 7500 miles between oil changes....that is good if that is in your vehicle...definitely check your manual on that...the OLS will tell you when to change your oil....very interesting system

Remember to change the oil every 5000 miles. And all the other, brake , transmission, rear end., everything you can imagine.
I follow the book and drive my car's and suv, over 250,000 miles.

Hi Catherine. My heart leaped in my throat when I saw Truck Trouble. Ugggh! Right off the bat!! But, you are so right. Things are going to happen, and we need to maintain our composure and think through what needs to be done, rather than panic. As you stated, it is a test of how we handle the stress. I have not had a chance to read the other comments, but I agree about carrying extra fluids. Oil, antifreeze, window washer, brake fluid, etc. I will leave it to other people to comment on which fluids can be interchangeable. Someone mentioned hoses. Absolutely have them checked. Having had a little experience with hose leaks, I have found a combination of duct tape, hose clamps, shop rags, gloves, and a good set of regular screwdrivers (and Philips head) come in handy. The duct tape and clamps (if properly applied) can take you a long way until you can replace the hose. Two obvious things to be careful. Hot steam and fluid can scald you in an instant. Let the fluid cool before trying a repair, and wipe the hose to remove dust and grime for a better seal when using the tape. I have found the clamps (placed on either side of the taped area), helps to tighten the seal from any fluid seepage. Hope this helps. I have a feeling you will have a steep learning curve over the next few months. Pretty soon, you will be comfortable trouble shooting and improvising. Like a female Macgyver!! One thing I have noticed on your channel is how willing people are to help. It is a wonderful thing to see, strangers helping strangers.

👍👍😎 Btw, I actually added a couple songs to my phone playlist from a group you played in one of your recent videos. I think it was the hike you took at the park near your home earlier this year. (The Avett Brothers) 👍👍😊 Btw, one of the places on my bucket list is Bryce Canyon. Speaking of that area, I enjoyed a great tour of the Monument Valley Tribal Park in Southeastern Utah with my sister several years ago. I particularly remembered all the photographers setting up their tripods for sunset shots. 😉 Happy Trails!!

A humble thought....if you don't already have it on your auto insurance, roadside assistance/towing would be worth the few extra bucks. Especially so if you're going to be doing alot of driving. BTW....I have been watching your last few adventures. I like your positive outlook on life and the outdoors.

There are a few problems with those years of chevys those hoses have a O ring and tend to leak . My inside door handle broke because they are made of pot metal and are brittle. Just little things but annoying none the less.

One of the reasons I didn't buy a class b rv and just a trailer... that exact reason that you can detach and still have fun while your vehicle is getting repaired!!! Oh well... that's just road life... to be expected! Just bought a 2003 Toyota Landcruiser... used cars can be a pain but once you get them going... you're good!!! I use a truck camper as well and carry a tool box , repair manual, extra radiator hoses , tire repair kit, tire inflator (plugs into cigarette lighter)and extra fluids .
