    I always wondered how was I overweight when I ate "healthy " food like rice and oats and fruits , thanks to Dr cywes I dont need to go to the toilet too much and feel better with a proper human diet .

      You were overweight because your kidneys were clogged from all the animal protein. Effectively making you retain tons of water weight every time you ate carbs.

    Thanks, Dr. C. I love your no frills, common sense advice. After years of trying to “drink enough water”, I figured out a few months ago that wasn’t the problem. Like I eat only when truly hungry, I drink only when my body tells me to. And I’m much better for it.✌🏻

      Also, some other doctor a while back said that it's not the water content you should be worried about it is the liquid Contant of your diet. I eat a lot of soups in the winter time from squash soup to broccoli soup to stews, and all of that liquid is counted as part of your liquid need. A smoothie counts as part of your liquid also.

    I had a pseudo gout episode a while ago. My VA Dr. was pushing prednisone. I got some barefoot shoes and worked it out.

    As one who suffered a few kidney stones, this was SO refreshing! There have been times I was afraid to eat some foods because I was afraid of getting a kidney stone. I don't like being afraid of food. :)

    I got one 10 years ago after a vegetarian experiment. Ended up in the ER. Terrible pain. Not sure it there was a connection but I switched to a more keto diet and haven't had another one since.

    Well that makes sense. I am on a carnivore diet for about 4 mos. now. Eating a lot of lean grass beef, and guess what, about a month ago I had a kidney stone. The stone was 10mm in size, so there was no way I was going to pass it. They had to go in and physically extract it. I guess I need to put some fat in my diet, maybe fry the meat in butter or ghee, because it is hard to get grass fed, grass finished beef that is not lean. I also had a stone about 25 years ago, but back then I was doing a lot of long distance running which probably caused my urine to become concentrated, because I know I was not drinking enough water during my runs.

    Great video. Interesting how many of the “truths” we believed in is because of excessive carbohydrates. If you are fat adapted your body works differently. It doesn’t have to cope with food it was never meant to.
    As well as kidney stones, the lack of water intake has also been blamed as a trigger for heart attacks. The theory is that heart attacks occur most often in the night or early morning when we are most dehydrated. Any thoughts on this?

    My entire life I've been carb addicted, lots of chips, lot's fast food, lot's of Soda, lot's of fake food.
    I become over height, almost diabetic, High pressure blood, and strangely no bad cholesterol at all.
    Started an ketogenic diet, based my entire food in good fats, and then suddenly, i start to suffer from Kidney stones.
    Now my question!
    Was the ketogenic diet the guilty for creating kidney stones, or was the ketogenic diet the guilty from expulsion the already created kidney stones?
    When we cut the carbs our body loses lots of water, and the capacity to hold water, can this be a cause?

      Kidney stones take years to build up and manifest. They most likely built up prior to keto. Keto is probably what helped to break them down

      I’ve heard that from Dr. Boz that keto breaks down kidney stones. It must be a big shock to the body going from a std American diet to a low carb/ketogenic diet.

      Great question. Happens when you start keto completely in one day and are insulin resistant. Body cant use fat so turns protein into sugar.
      But u may have had a stone from before that passed when u started keto

      Duh of course it was Keto that created kidney stones u moron. Dont you know Dr Atkins died from kidney failure. His weight ballooned up 30 pounds in 1 week because his kidneys got clogged then he died. The Carnivore diet and Keto diet is the same as the Atkins diet with a different name. He tried both high fat and high protein and both diets failed.

    I have passed two stones in my life and yes, I would equate them to childbirth. It is the worst pain ever. I pray I never have another. Hopefully going keto will help make that true.

    I have had kidney stones before. Mine were calcium crystals due to hyperparathyroidism. Thankfully they broke down and I was able to pass them.

    Well. You pretty much described me here. And my kidney stone problem started when I added extra amino acid supplements. Tonnes of Meat and adequate level of carbohydrates/sugar. But I do eat a high saturated fat amount as well.

    Phd Cywes, you didn't mention about kidney protein protecting against stone formation. This protein is called nephrocalcine. For many decades physicians thought that it was evolutionary remnant broken unfunctional protein. But now we know, that in order this protein to function it must have provided specifically vitamin K2. K1 does not work....

    So when I prepare a steak, I cover it in olive oil before adding salt and pepper. I then pan-fry it in avocado oil at pretty high heat, turning once only and adding a knob of butter on every turn. The weight of the steak is normally around 300g, or 10 ounces. I mostly have this with a mixed salad, which always contains avocado's (when available), and the salad drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil. That is typically my main meal of the day. I would swap out my steak with fish or chicken, but the basic use of the oils remains the same. Would you care to comment on how you would rate these meals with regards to fat and protein intake?

      You should stay away from seed oils, is what I have researched and found. Use butter or ghee or beef tallow. Yum

      @@catrinaitaliano8755 Olive oil and avocado oil are not seed oils. They are fruit oils and don't have the Omega 6 PUFA issue that the seed oils do. Also the oils are more easily extracted from olives and avocado. No heat, high pressure, solvents, deodorizers, coloring agents. Unlike seed oils.

    "It's very painful for men. For women it's akin to childbirth." Since when is childbirth not painful as hell? My stepdad has been to the hospital for kidney stones and while he was there he spoke to female patients who had previously given birth and who were there for kidney stones. They said kidney stones were more painful than childbirth!

      We are a different species when it comes to pain, in my opinion. Childbirth is extremely painful, but we know we are getting a miracle at the end. Who would want to give birth to a piece of stone? Nothing to gain with that. hahaha.

      I had 2 children then an emergency gallbladder removal. The pain of gallstone blocking the tube had me panting in pain and in another world, I guess like shock from a painful injury
      Learned to practice the breathing techniques for childbirth, but the breathing for pain was a natural body response. It was like I was watching someone else experience it.
      Childbirth, not like that for me

    Is a lack of salt the reason magnesium and calcium stones form is because the kidney will use those minerals instead of sodium? And those minerals more easily bind to the acids in the urine?

    I can’t refute what you said because I’m not a doctor. All I have is my anecdotal story of my kidney stone. I was following a plant based diet for about 2yrs and started having flank pain. After finally getting a CT scan done, I found I had a 1.1-1.2 centimeter kidney stone. I went keto and have been for more than 2yrs. The pain subsided so I didn’t have anything done until yesterday (ESWT). So, doc, other than me eating a high oxylate diet (spinach, lentils, beans), what caused my first and only stone at age 68?

      Michael, I would guess that your plant based diet was also high in carbs. /sugar and low(er) in protein = the perfect set up for stone formation; that is exactly what happened to me. I changed to a ketovore diet and haven't had any stones since (7+years)! Blessings my friend.

    Been there done that and never want to do it again. It was 0' dark 30 when it announced. Emergency surgery. Permanent damage. If child birth is akin to the pain of a stone and if I were a women - No way in hell would I give birth.

    Just had my sixth kidney stone over a ten-year period…. been on keto for the last four years having two kidney stones in the last 2 months; Could it have been from the high doses of vitamin C I took during Covid? Things that make you go hmmmm.
    Guess what my urologist told me to do after this last two…Drink a lot of water and cut down on the salt.

    My Dad had chronic kidney stones when he was alive. Multiple kinds. When he died, his kidneys were completely full of stones. He had a genetic mutation that caused it.

    Yes! Yes! Yes! First thing my deceased husband’s nephrologist did was to limit his fluid intake to a liter a day! Of course, he was in kidney failure. Nevertheless, the nephrologist stressed that it is ridiculous how much water people believe they should consume.

    So why do people on keto, both adults and children have a much higher prevalence of uric acid kidney stones than the general population. There's several observational studies on this, which you could say are not ideal, but this is 1 variable here and a strict diet.

    Have you knowledge of the work of Prof. Richard Johnson, who is exploring and putting out studies which indicate that our bodies are capable of creating fructose from high glycemic sources like potatoes, rice, breads, and also from salt? I would like to see other people in the low carb/keto community, comment on and examine this ... With our hearing that fructose is so dangerous, contributing largely to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction issues, it seems a bit unnerving to think our own bodies are capable of "creating" this fructose. I'm just hoping more people out there begin to check up on this topic. .... Sorry for this being unrelated to kidney stones ...

      Fructose is not the problem. The problem has always been animal protein and animal fat causes diabetes and insulin resistance.

      What you describe is known as the _polyol pathway._ If you avoid fructose in your diet but eat too much starch (glucose), you'll get the fructose anyway.

    I always feel pain in the lower right side of my stomach after I eat ..it last for hours and affects my sleep. Does anyone know why and what’s the solution?? The pain comes with bloating as well

    Hmmm, but if you are eating MASSIVE amounts of oxalates you are adding to the overall oxalate burden? So if MOST people have say 60% from liver, how about a VLC keto person eating tons of oxalates? I was doing that. Fat-adapted keto, had gout. Went carnivore -- no gout, no arthritis.

      Usually not enough fat. But massive xs anything is usually not good

Funnily enough on keto since 2015 I loved vegetables and ate a great variety of them, and salads (no grains, lots of fats, butter not margarine, no seed oils in my life, no soft drinks or sweeteners, no deserts), along with mostly red meat. But now on carnivore I just don't miss them. I can look at plant food the way I always looked at the supermarket aisles full of stuff in packets -- with genuine detachment. Arthritis pain in hip gone, "fettler's thumbs" gone (that was pretty much a constant -- I do a lot of keyboard work). Ambulatory gout and constant grumbling pain (tenderness in an ancient big toe injury gone). I'm not fanatical and I will snip a few chives into an omelette, and civilized amounts of red wine (no change in this, and not by the gallon) and coffee (by the gallon). So the only change has been from VLC keto to carnivore. Now I just have to persuade my doc I'm not crazy. But this really should be in the GOUT vid , not the kidney stones one. Feel free to delete it as off-topic.

    Look I have a lot to wade through and I'm compiling information from most of the health gurus that I will be releasing on my alt channel, but you by far blow their content out of the water with explaining the phenomenon that is affecting so many people in an unhealthy way. Emphasis in unnecessary amounts of protein and sugar are the driving force of poor metabolic health. While protein seems less severe, neither one should be taken lightly. I believe we'd do better to reassess our macro ratios for optimal health

    I have a question about consuming salt... you say (others too) that we should not be afraid to consume salt when we are in fat adapted ketosis..... But what about someone who has Meniere's disease, where they recommend low salt diets to control the vertigo? What would a person do in that case. I've looked many places, but can't find the answer to that question. Would just the fact that we're in fad adapted ketosis be enough to help that condition, even though we are still eating salt in our diets?

      My anecdotal story is that my vertigo (also my high bp) seemed to reduce when I went low carb and keto. When I was undiagnosed type 2 diabetic I had some episodes of vertigo that were very debilitating.

    I stayed keto or close to it for a couple years and my main snack was pecans. This year I had multiple stones(approximately 8 total) and had two litho treatments to bust them. I have always got a single stone usually every 3 years or so. Was it the pecans or the keto diet or a combination of both? I tried ketosis to help with migraines and it was very successful so I hate to give up this way of eating.

      I love pecans so I hope they aren't the reason! When you say snack are you saying eating pecans during a feeding window or just throughout the day?

      I would have them in between my morning meal and evening meal so basically I skip lunch and the pecans were good for curbing hunger.

    What is a high protein amount for a 40 y.o. woman with 20% body fat? I live in Texas. :)

      He did a video where he talked about that within the past week or so. From what I recall, he said to pick a weight that will put you into the normal BMI range, then calculate protein intake somewhere between 0.5 and 0.8 times your weight in KG’s.

      Need to know your body weight to determine an appropriate amount. For example, I weigh 80 kg. I can have up to 160 g of protein per day because that’s 2g per kilogram of my body weight. I would say that’s high and may be too high. I’d say between 40 g and 100 g of protein per day is plenty for me.
      If I get more than 160 g of protein per day it’s like pouring gasoline in my car even though the gas tank is already full. The body can’t use it

      You should eat 1 gr protein per kg of your weight.
      So your quota per day is around 80 gr protein.
      Your body only needs those 80 grams to rebuild, the rest is used as fuel or fat,
      Is not as bad as carbs, but to loose weight you need more fat.
      A 2000 cal Keto diet is...
      5 % carbs = 100 cal of carbs = actually 25 grams of carbs by weight
      20% protein = 400 cal of protein = 100 grams of protein by weight
      75% fat = 1500 cal of fat = 166 grams of fat by weight
      Do your own calculation for a 1750 cal diet per day
      (1 gr carb is 4 cal 1 gr protein is 4 cal 1 gr fat is 9 cal )

    I am now on carnivore and feel great but prior, on the ketogenic diet, I probably was high protein and not enough fat but I did not consume high carbs. I still have a kidney stone. Is that from just high protein?

      when he saying don't drink too much water I think he's implying that you should only drink it when you are thirsty. When you increase your salt intake you are going to get thirsty more and your water intake will level out with the salt. "Too much salt" has variables
