I don't recommend starting with the car in gear. Clutch down is always a good idea in any manual transmission car. But the gear level should be in neutral, not first. Nor do you want your right foot on the brake; you will want it ready by the throttle .
My first car was a 1972 Fiat 500 - I had it for 21 years and loved every second. I don't understand why you think you have to start it in first gear. Neutral with the clutch down (reduce stress on the starter) but in first gear's just pointless. My switches were wipers on the right, then first on the left was the headlamp and the second was the dashboard light. My key was on the column and the keyhole on the dash had a silver blanking plate. Indicators on the left (short stalk) and high/low beam on the long stalk. The lever behind the driver's seat (passenger seat on those driving in countries on the wrong side of the car) controlled the heater. Did yours have the primitive cruise control on the central air ducting under the dash? Fabulous cars.
No, incorrect explanation! Left short lever switch is for turn signal lights and longer left lever switch is for toggling between low beam and high beam front lights. On the dash there are three switches and upper position is off and down position is on; 1st switch is for position lights/parking lights, 2nd switch is for low beam lights (toggling with left longer lever between low beam and high beam lights), 3rd switch is for one speed wiper windshield motor on. With the finger under the dash you mechanically pump the washer fluid on windshield. On the dash left round indicator is for both turn signal sides indicator on and on the right side is round high beam on indicator which lit blue. On the floor there are two levers; left lever is choke and right lever is starter. There is one more lever on the floor behind front seats on central tunnel which is for moving air flap for entering warm air from engine into the cabin.
this video is useless. why is the guy just pointing the camera to her face? you needed to show how properly use the gear and do the "doppietta". Plus, why do you have to start in 1st gear? you can put it in neutral, also you don't need to press the brake, it's not a damn automatic transmission.
Andrea M I have one, 1970. Never start any car in any gear; it's neutral and clutch depressed. Also, the left hand side stalk at the back is headlights, dipped and main beam.. A switch on the dashboard is wipers.

P.S. The lever in the back is for the low and high beams, there's a switch on the dashboard to turn the wipers on :P
