Just spitballing here, as a novice GM trying to learn this game as well, but you could have had Sokka take the Angry condition for his weak hit crossing the river, angry that his companions were so slow and he had to put himself in harm's way to cross when he could have done it more safely if they had kept up. Then you could have had one of the other characters use Guide and Comfort on him while they're resting in the cabin to talk it out and hopefully clear his condition.
That's very true but my goal was to introduce only the basic moves. Im hoping to add status effects in a future video and then blend them together with weak hit/misses when performing said actions. There's so much to unpack in this game. It's a huge learning curve for me 😂
@@Paulrollsdice That's fair, I was just trying to think of how you could have smoothly incorporated the Guide and Comfort move. I suppose you could have just said Sokka already had 1 fatigue from earlier, and he took 1 fatigue, and so the team wanted to Guide and Comfort him in the cabin to soothe that fatigue. Anyway, thanks for the video, I think I'll share this with my group so they have a baseline understanding of what to do when we get started.
Avatar Legends is a very unique roleplaying experience and it is certainly proving a diffcult one to learn but as I spend more time with the core rulebook I'm quickly loving all of its mechanics. I hope you enjoy this little video that hopefully helps explain the basics of exploring your surroundings in-game.
This answered some question for me and gave me some great new insights! For example, I was stuck in the thinking that the partial success rolls should always be a role-play thing. Like with Sokka, rather than take some fatigue, I was trying to think of what could happen with the vine that would cause some trouble. But keeping it simple like this hadn't occurred, so I'm more comfortable with giving reasonable situations to my table. Thanks so much!
You're welcome! And thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment. I'm still new to the game myself as you probably guessed and I'm currently recording, deleting and re-recording my next video :') it's a challenge but I'm having fun with this.
Hello. Newbie to this system too. I have a few questions... On your first example, Sokka asked "Is this river safe to cross?" which isn't really any of the questions, thought it's probably a good ruling since it kind of falls in between "Who or what is the biggest threat?" and "What’s my best way out/in/through?" Also, I'm not sure that Sokka actually "uses the move". Instead, I think you are supposed to say what you are doing and the GM then decides if that triggers the move. For example, Sokka's player would say "I look for a part of the river that's slow moving or where it's shallow enought" and the GM goes "ok, that triggers *assess the situation*, roll the dice..." If the river is *obviously* not safe to cross, you wouldn't even need the roll, the GM should just say so when they get to the scene. Also... poor dude looking for a solution to a river when he's got two waterbenders and two earthbenders in the team
Hi there! You've made very good points here and you're definitely more correct than I am 😂 It's a very alien system to me and I'm still learning as you have guessed. I'm currently reading over things again and gaining insight from fellow players and commenters like yourself so hopefully I'll nail it next time. Also poor Sokka indeed. I figured he always tends to act first and think later and with him reaching the river first he just goes for it. In hindsight he should've waited for his more capable team mates 😂
@@Paulrollsdice I'm very new too! Have only just played two sessions and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the mechanics. They seem very friendly to the mindset of actors and improv artists and not so much directed towards more numerical minds like mine

Nice video ;) On push youre luck sokka player need to pay extra cost befor roll. In this move you pay some extra price to try something out of youre reach. I need some more avatar legends content !!!!
Very true! I worded it slightly out of order but Sokka landing hard was essentially the cost of Pushing his luck. I could've added that he maybe loses his boomerang in the river too as a consequence! Thank you for the comment. I'm looking to record more Avatar Legends content soon. Is there anything specific that you're interested? Rules explanations, playbook overviews? Exmaple scenarios?
You do not need to Pay a Cost for Push Your Luck. As per the Move: “When you push your luck in a risky situation, say what you want to do and roll with Passion. On a hit, you do it, but it costs you to scrape by; the GM tells you what it costs you. On a 10+, your boldness pays off despite the cost; the GM tells you what other lucky opportunity falls in your lap.” There is no “de facto” cost to pay prior to the Move per the Move itself. You may be thinking about either A) Live Up to Your Principle, in which you pay 1 Fatigue to roll with one of your Principles instead of a requested Core Stat B) Rolling a 10+ on the Stance Move and choosing to do a Learned Technique from your chosen Approach, which requires 1 Fatigue to do so Otherwise, for push your luck, you just trigger the Move and pay a Cost on a 7+ (because it is the one Move in the game that still has a Cost on a 10+, which is why it is usually inaccurate to describe “Hits” as “Successes” or “Super Successes” or “Crits” [which actually don’t exist in this game]). That in mind, the GM is almost always making their own GM Moves whenever it is appropriate for them to contribute to the larger Conversation. This could mean prior to a Player Facing Move, the GM might have a Player pay a simple fictional and/ or mechanical Cost prior to a roll to gain the requisite fictional positioning and permission to attempt the task they are approaching. It isn’t a common task, but it can be done Either way, it is not the default
@@Sully5443 I sense a contradiction in the rules here. In the description of the move by the end of it " Remember that getting the opportunity never means that you avoid paying the cost inherent in the move-you always pay a cost when you push your luck!" It sounds as if the advice and clarification think that you always pay the cost, but maybe that's just a misreading
