A tip for you and others, when refitting screws into plastic, turn the screw anti-clockwise until you feel or hear a click (this means you have found the thread in the plastic) and then screw in clockwise. This stops you cutting another thread which will weaken the plastic in time.

Well presented and filmed with lots of close-ups, I enjoyed the content as many of us try to keep the older models running, thankyou

Looks great, Pad - amazing work! I, too, am in fact trying to fix a royal scot/patriot class by mainline, but the motor magnets have failed! Once again, lovely work!

It's a shame that the plastic on Airfix products particularly has gone brittle. I have had one of these since the mid 80s but it has only run for about 6 years in total. The keeper plate also cracked on mine and I have superglued it with a piece of plastic with success. Mine is hard wired to DCC and I have yet to summon the courage to service the motor. But it runs remarkably well and it's slow speed running is perfect for such an old model, so I am going to leave it until it starts to misbehave. It also has good pulling power.. Mine isn't quiet either. Anyway, thanks for a great video. Really thorough and helpful

Thoroughly enjoyed your video and no-nonsense commentary. Sorry to hear you've been ill and hope you are on the road to full recovery. If you found a source for the tender's traction tyres, please do share. You have a good bargain. I'm awaiting delivery of my Ebay Royal Scot and your step-by-step video has been a great eye-opener for what to look out for. Thank you!

Thank you Christopher, glad you found it useful. Recovery is slow but going in the right direction! My traction tyres were ok so can't help you there.

I forgot to say that when I got this loco 40 years ago, the front bogie would not negotiate 2nd radius/small Hornby points well. So I removed the spring under the bogie and it has not given any trouble ever since. I don't know if this might help others.

Airfix bases do crack from age and over-tightening perhaps
I use the existing base as a template for a thin styrene re-enforcement over the whole base to hopefully prevent any more cracks developing (plus super glue in the existing cracks).
