Toyota Pickup Truck Cap/Camper Shell - What Fits?

    The 84-88 and 89-95 beds are the same dimensions, so widen your search to cover all those years.
    The Xtra Cabs have a 10 degree angle on the rear, while the standard cabs have a 4 degree angle. So a cap for a standard cab would have a gap if installed on an extra cab pickup and a cap designed for an extra cab, which is pretty rare, would hit the top of a standard cab when installed.
    The 84-95 toyota bed is 60” wide by 76” long. The long bed pickups are 87” in length.
    96-04 Tacomas got slightly bigger, but can still work on a toyota pickup US spec bed. US spec beds have wider flat bed rails compared to the import style beds, which have a thinner, rolled edge, giving a smaller mounting surface for a cap.
    So when shopping for a used cap, forget about anything full-size, Or even midsize like the Dodge Dakota, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon… all of which are too big for our pickups.
    The Ford Ranger is compatible… somewhat.
    First gen 83-92 will work on long bed pickups. Second Gen 93-2011 is about 2” wider than the first gen, but the same 87” length, so they will be ok to fit a US long bed with the wider bed rails, but won’t sit well on the import beds with the rolled rails.
    The standard bed first gen ranger is just over an inch shorter than the toyota pickup, but could still work. It would just have to be mounted a little further back to be flush on the tailgate end, which means there would be just over an inch of extra space between the cap and the toyota cab. Second gen ranger standard bed is almost an inch shorter than the pickups, but could also work in the same way. Just remember the second gen Ranger is 2” wider, so sitting on the rolled edge of the import toyota pickup bed could be sketchy compared to the US bed with the flat edge and thicker rails.
    Now here’s where cab degree is important… Rangers all have a 7 degree cab angle, regardless of standard of extended cab. 7 degrees comes in right between the toyota’s 4 degree standard cab and the 10 degree extra cab. So the gap between a ranger cap and the toyota’s cab will be slightly off from top to bottom.
    Next let’s talk about the Chevy S10 and GMC Sonoma.
    The First generation of 82-93 trucks have the same 60” width, but come up about an inch and a half short of the toyota bed, but have the same 4 degree cab angle as the toyota standard cab, so a first gen S10 cap could work on standard cab toyotas with a little extra gap between the cap and cab.
    The second generation S10/Sonoma beds are the same length as toyotas, at 76”. However, the second gens are all a 10° cab angle, regardless of the cab length. So these caps will only fit toyota Xtra cab standard bed… but there’s just one issue. Chevrolet slightly tapered the beds on the second gen S10/Sonoma, so it’s actually 62” wide at the cab and is 3” narrower at the back at 59”.
    So it will fit an Xtracab standard bed, but after centering it up, the front will slightly hang over where it meets the cab, while the rear fits nice.
    First and second generation S10/Sonoma long beds are like 7.5’ long, so they’re all out of the question for a long bed toyota.
    Let’s talk about Nissan trucks… First, they all come in a 4° cab angle, regardless of it being a regular cab or a king cab, which makes these caps have a weird gap on a Toyota Xtra Cab. I couldn’t find any Nissans to measure, so here’s what I gathered from the internet:
    83-86 regular cab nissans are 60” wide by 75” long, making them very compatible with std cab toyota pickups.
    The face lifted 86.5 to 93 Regular cabs were a little larger, 60” wide by 76” long, making them a perfect match for a standard cab toyota.
    The 82 and earlier Nissans were called Datsuns, and their beds were 60 x 76” for the standard bed, but the long beds were about 6” longer than the Toyota Long beds.
    Although i can’t recall the last time I saw one on the road, We can’t forget about the Mazda B Series trucks. The 86-93 B series pickup’s 60x76” bed is the exact same as the toyota’s. The only thing I was unable to check is the cab angle. The standard cabs look to have little to no cab angle, while the extended cabs have a slight angle, but nothing close to the 10° of the toyota Xtra cab.
    Mazda long beds are 7.5’ long, so their caps aren’t compatible with Toyota long beds.

    Almost all of your info is spot on-I've literally written the book on this stuff-well, blog anyway- important to note, the CabPlus B-series Mazdas (86 to 93) have a totally different bed than the standard cabs, and they're like a whole inch and a half shorter, the KingCab hardbody Nissans (86.5-97) are also slightly different than their standard cab versions, but not to the degree of the old Mazdas. Where I live on the west coast, extra cab Toys are way more common. I have an 87 B2000, and I have an old SnugTop from an 87 Nissan standard cab, fits great, I've also used tonneau covers on that old Mazda from 1st gen Tacos (95.5 to 04). The bed dimensions are almost spot on the same.

      I planned on painting this cap red to match (I even bought the paint) but the fitment being a little off bugged me after a while. I ended up selling it to a S10 owner. If I ever find one that fits the truck perfect, I'll definitely paint it to match. If you're looking for a good paint tutorial, check out this video ruclips.net/video/qyIBWXXPjgU/видео.html It's a fender, but the same concept applies to a cap. You'll just have to mask off the windows.

    I have a question, I've been looking at a Toyota pickup (1986) and it has the 22r, how has your experience been with the carburetor? I'm just wondering if I should hold out to try and find one with EFI. Thanks!

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  5 лет назад +3

      22r/re are both great motors. The 22RE makes a little more power and might fetch a couple more mpg, but both are reliable. The biggest difference between carb and efi, is when something starts to go wrong on a carb motor, it will slowly start to run worse over time. On an efi motor, it can be running fine and then one morning BAM check engine light is on and it runs like crap because a sensor went bad. I wouldn't pass on a clean truck because it had either of those motors, but I'd look the other way if it has the 3.0 v6.

      It wouldn't look good because there would be a gap behind the cab. Other than that the length will be same but Tacoma is about 1.5" wider. So depending on how much the cap hangs over on the 92 it could work on the 96.

    So, I’m having trouble finding info on this... would a ‘89 pickup cap fit my 2010 Tacoma? Seller says it’s for a 6 ft bed. Seems you guys have a lot more info and I am struggling to figure it out. Found the cap on craigslist and don’t want to make the drive out of town to find out it doesn’t fit.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  4 года назад +1

      6' bed is kind of a standard term for a regular size bed, even though they aren't all exactly 6' and can vary by an inch or so. Even if the length is close, I'm betting the width is not. 2010 Tacoma is a larger truck than the 84-95 pickup, so I bet the cap for a 2010 Taco is a little wider. I'd ask the seller to measure the width before I drive out to buy it.

      @@vegaf2011 You have the xtra cab, so the back wall has a 10° cab angle. 84-95 xtra cab will be a direct fit. Most other caps that fit will only have a 4° (nissan, mazda) or 7° if it comes from a Ranger. So they'll fit but have a gap at the cab. 94+ S10 had the 10° cab angle but the bed is tapered by a few inches from front to back, so it won't look perfect at the front edge. Those are your choices for xtra cab if you have to buy one from another truck that isn't an xtra cab. 96-04 Tacoma xtra cab is 1.5" wider but might still mount ok depending on the design of the cap where it meets the rails.
