Gunther Holtorf's 23 Year Road Trip

- Back in 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine set out on what was meant to be an 18-month tour of Africa in their Mercedes Benz G Wagon. Now, with more than 800,000km (500,000 miles) on the clock, Gunther is still going.
The German former airline executive has travelled the equivalent of 20 times around the planet in the vehicle - which he calls Otto. He says he has never had a serious breakdown. Recently in Vietnam, Canadian-born photographer David Lemke joined Gunther on one section of his epic journey.

RIP Gunther. You are an inspiration to all future adventurers. A true legend!
If only 1/3 of the world's population could achieve such cultural enrichment, we wouldn't have half the problems that are currently hunting society....
We need more ambassadors like Gunther in our planet.
Peace
"No blog, phone, facebook."
Just things in life that really matters. Great!
Nice Benz ad ;) No but really, it must of been fantastic travelling to all those places. Gratz to him :)
You should read up on a man whose name was Mate Simunovic, aka Mate Svjetski ( Mate of the World) he traveled 5 continents, 70 contries, 360 000 km in 19 years, using a bicycle, boat and on foot, his only companion was his dog Globus (Globe), the journey took place from 1928 until 1947, when he came back to what was then the new republic, socialist Yugoslavia, he was then arrested an they took his passport, he couldnt continue his travels and couldnt leave Yugoslavia ever again, he died in 1969 as an forgoten man, although at one time NY Times, La Prensa, El Telegrafo...wrote about him as uniqe example of the globetrotter.

Man who lived his dream for 23 years and still... amazing story!
Probably one of the biggest inspirations for all traveling souls with a wanderlust out there.Hats off for this old gentleman, what a king of his time.
Amazing video! You not only an amazing adventurer - but an incredible photographer!
Reminds me to: Michel Delpierre & Yutaka Okano in 1960 they travelled 220000 miles through 110 countries in a Volkswagen Microbus. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for this :)
Nice Mercedes commercial :>
I enjoy the photo report very much. What I recognize is that the you have a mascot accompanying you ; the car is always there. All the years I traveled I brought the same (black/red) backpack, so when there was no one around to take a picture of me, I would take a picture of the backpack instead. After a few years the backpack went out of production, so I quickly secured a few used ones on ebay. Let this journey be an inspiration to all of us !
Super! This is the dreeam of many people

Amazing, rich guy who doesn't need to work for 27 years goes with his wife on a unlimited vacation, congrats, every one would like to do this but most of us can't, sincerely congratulation

This is Life.
JOURNEY OF LIFE
Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.
Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.
.
What life💓
3:38 it is amazing!!
Dlatego Kocham Mercedesy a szczególnie swój W126... G Class to moje marzenie do zrealizowania. Pozdrawiam

The description says he is a former airline executive. So money might not be an issue.
The car is a 300 GD. Its a 3 liter straight five cylinder diesel engine. An engine also found in the W123, the most successful Mercedes of all times.
Regarding the death of his wife; why would he need to share such intimate details about his personal life?
And about the Leica cameras, did you even watch the end of the video?
awsome :)
Leica and Mercedes should give this man some royalties for marketing.
This man is a hero
he was director of airoport company :-)
yea you are right. Well, i have no idea.
❤
que buena onda!te quiero un montonaso!
Living for a mission, something greater than yourself.
5 people never left their own hometown.
I wonder how he funded this. It would be so amazing to do something like that.
Amazing, but how could you afford the trip?
RIP legend
Seeing as this is a docu- about the car, he could have explained a few things:
-where and when did he replace the tires and battery and wipers etc.
-what mind of compression he is.getting from the pistons, and is it gasoline or diesel
Also how did he pay for the trip and what did his wife die of and where is she buried.
Also, appears Lemke took his photos with one of those ancient Laica cameras.
-
Piękne !
I want to know more stories. Where can I read about his adventures? Like the one in NK.
It's not that Gunther is against technology. He's using a Mercedes Waggon for heaven's sake and a Leica camera is definitely technology. It's just that Gunther doesn't seem to want to use new technology that has been created after a certain point in his life for reasons known to him.
+Ben NCM because these things were made correctly, without the concept of planned obsolescence built into their dna.
getting car permits into some countries must have been hell....
this guy is my hero.
p.s. otto rules!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Think it said 300GD in one of the images.
G-Wagen driver here. Wishing I could travel the world with my girl & G-class too... Was this a Diesel or Benzin G?
Question: How do you get authorization to drive a vehicle through lots of different countries? Do you have to register in each country? I see in the pics lots of various plates, so I assume so, but just wondering if anyone has good insight on this one.
TIP (Temporary Importation Permit) or Carnet de Passage, depending on the country
Thats the reason why i chose w460 rather than defender
im gonna do the sequel of it, even if my life depends on it ! :)
Wow
Ads are getting smarter
He was an airline executive, probably quite a salary
Have you read the description?
"The German former airline executive..."
I hope they wrote some memoirs of their journey and not just photos shooting. The whole trip all these years could be made into a bestselling book and then into a movie. All the money he spent on his trip could be tripled in months.
Sometimes it's not about the money...hard for most to understand, but we totally get it after spending 7 years just like Gunther and his wife. Steph
I would like to take that trip .Now where do I get the Mercedes and gas money ?
The wife has been travelling for the same time, seen the same things, had the same experiences. Why is the whole thing about him?
how is he going to do the repair works on the car?
he did them himself
ich geb auf jedenfall n daumen für otto
Mercedes should pay him for making them the greatest commercial ever.
They actually later on did.
This would not have been possible with any other car than a Mercedes Benz
So obvious that one single dislike belongs to Quandt family :P
I don't believe Mercedes is even mentioned in this video.
Read the description: "former airline executive".
Did they sleep in the vehicle?
Amaze balls
1:52 - It says "Wash me in Swahili"
Dunno if I could handle the bureaucracy.
в джип наверно по ходу путешествия еще пару лямов вложил,там по любому куча поломок было
I am sure this guys will get a Brand New Mercedes G Class from Mercedes.
She died. In 2010.
Mercedes advert.
How do you pay for that?
0:37 music ?
right here right now.
well, the things you can do when you are fUCKING MILLIONAIRE
what is the name of the song 0:36?
I think that this is Fatboy Slim - Right Here Right Now.
@@xBoneyM666x thx !
Good pension plan! ;)
This man spent his last 23 years just to be a Mercedes Benz Viral.
