Karyna, glad you enjoyed the show. I was there too, and it was quite an experience. I found people at the show to be really friendly and though Saturday was really, really crowded, they were still friendly - which certainly helps. I was there Friday morning bright and early...what you saw at the Toyooka Craft table were the limited remains of what they opened the show with. You could walk up to their table and see everything they had, but to buy anything, you had to get into a long line. I was in line for 20 minutes and I've heard others that had to wait even longer. The line was necessary to prevent the Toyooka staff from being completely mobbed and overwhelmed. I bought a three-pen wooden rest from them. I haven't been to other pen shows, but I've read or seen a lot of recaps of other shows. San Francisco Pen Show is generally acknowledged to be the friendliest big pen show. You got a great haul! I had nibs worked on too, and you're so right...having it done right there, with instant feedback and re-touching if needed is wonderful. I have purposely never ordered nib work online because I hate mailing off pens, and most nib meisters have a 6-8 week turnaround time. I live in San Francisco and I appreciate you found my city fun and pleasant. Yes, we have some problems now, but the national media has really overhyped the actual situation. Most neighborhoods are not the ones they love to show on the media. Enjoy your haul!
Wow. Thanks for a wonderful video. Yes, the common adjective to describe the show is "it's overwhelming". I've heard that from many people. I didn't realize that you are an introvert. I think that I am too. Alot of people in this community I believe are also introverts.
It definitely was overwhelming, and I took plenty of breaks. I also think that part of being an introvert is that we do enjoy talking to people, but it has to be the right group of people talking about things we are passionate about, not the small talk.
That Hinze pen is gorgeous, I might be bias as I love pink and purple! SF 2023 was my first pen show and I had a lot of fun as well. I got to try out so many different inks from the ink testing station and finally get to feel the fluffy lining of the Rickshaw sleeve! And of course meeting Drew is the highlight of the show :)
Oh my heart! I had to stop the video to comment right away...that is the most exquisite pen I have ever seen. Really, that is a work of art and I'm so glad you got it. Back to the video, and then I'll return to comments. 😊
Oh my gosh...that Hinze pen. Such beautiful colors...and that NIB! Can I just say, I never knew such a thing existed. I really do think that pen was made to have a fancy gold whatchamacallit, in place of the plain silver one. Why else would they make it interchangeable! 😅 I am so happy you took a risk and stepped out of your comfort zone to go to the pen show. It sounds like you had such a good time and really made the most of your time there. I'm so happy for you!
Thank you, Kim! I was seriously terrified going into this and I'm glad I had my friend Carola there with me. Now that I've broken my "pen show" seal, there are many more in my future.
Ooh, that Atelier Lusso ❤. You made a fabulous choice. I went to my first pen show in February and it was amazing. I can’t wait until next spring. The pen community is full of such wonderful people. Your experience definitely conveyed the warm and fuzzies of the pen show experience. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Karyna! This was very fun to watch. I can't believe your Atelier pen is named after you xD it's definitely your pen ^_^ I felt that pen was not meant for me even though I was eyeing it because it was the one pen from their table that caught my eye!! I'm happy you were able to get it and that no one else bought it while you went on break. I told myself, too, that if my Leonardo was still there on Sunday! I'll get it! Oh and I love your cute baby blue pen pouch that you brought your pens in. Could you tell me where you bought yours? I might like to check out all the designs!
When I heard you were eyeing that Atelier Lusso pen, I was like 😱. And I kept telling myself that if it wasn't there after my lunch break, it wasn't meant to be. We seem to have the same thought process! And the blue pen pouch is from The Coffee Monsterz Co! She released a limited amount of them for her birthday sale in August.
Glad you enjoyed it! SF has been dubbed the "fun show" and it has a lot more stationery vendors as well as vendors from Japan. Every pen show is different and I'm excited to discover new ones.
Thank you so much for this vlog 😊 I had recently in Nov went to my first pen show ever in Tokyo and I was totally unprepared for how overwhelmed I was. Other than Australia this is probably the closest location for me. Tokyo is 13 hours flight away 🥲 and Sydney about 4-6 hours 😅 Lovely haul!! ❤
My husband picked up the Hinze Nebula with an orange nib. They will be at the Chicago Planner Convention teaching and sponsoring a table. Looking forward to hanging out with them again.
Hi Karyna! 🙌 I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you in person as well as all the others at the Esterbrook table. 😂 had so much fun teasing Bryan and I’m only sorry that I couldn’t hang out longer at the pen show. See you around ✌🏼
I'm finally at all the pen show videos and it's so interesting that we all had similar experiences. I'm still riding that high! Can't wait to see what you got, still have 30 minutes left on the video.
This was such a fun video! This year was my first time going to the pen show and it was so fun. I saw you on Saturday but you were talking to someone at the Esterbrook booth and I didn't want to interrupt you. Maybe next year!
@@KarynaLovesToPlan oh I hate it when that happens. :) Toyooka looked to be swamped from the minute the opened. Your Abalone pen is stunning. Love the Hinze too. Good thing I don't like big pens or I'd be crying. Enjoy everything!
If you want a crisp line, you should get a crisp italic, but it is very unforgiving. You have to hit the sweet spot and keep the nib flat to the page, or you'll tear the page. Cool so you got your namesake pen.
You're welcome, Karyna! Lovely to meet you. Had no idea that you were terrified of going to the Pen Show. Did not know what to expect and now have a better idea of what to do next year. Yes, I will make an appt. with a nibmesiter and have a list of what I might want to get and just try for the heck of it (like the Homo Sapiens Bronze Age which I did have the privilege of trying). Fun video. Funny that someone recognized your hands - you really should look into a career as a hand model. Looking forward to future vids. Pam
Hi Pam! Thanks again for all those inks. And for coming to say hi! Yes, highly recommend booking with a nibmeister. I want to try Gina or NibTailor or CY in the future. And yes, a huge benefit from the show is holding pens in your hand that you wouldn't otherwise get a chance to see. Thanks again and hope to see you at the next Pen Show!
Thanks for the recap. What lovely pens you got at the show, stunning. And so glad to see that you got multiple pens tuned and ground by Kirk. Hope to see you next year!
Karyna, the pen from Atelier Lusso has to be THE most beautiful pen I have ever seen. I love the pen rest too. That sounds like a great time. I am on the east coast and want to do the DC one next year.
Ooh La La, that pen! Stunning. You mentioned the Chicago Pen Show as a possibility in the future. I have been there three times with the first time being right after the pandemic. It seems that more of the vendors are returning after taking a couple years off but it is quite a bit smaller than SF. They have a lot of vintage dealers and about 3 or 4 nibsmiths attending. As far as retailers, Atlas Stationers (its home turf), Vanness, The Federalist, Papier Plume and Lemur Ink attend. It seems that some of the larger independent makers like Hinze and Kanilea have tables. The 3 day pass is very reasonably priced. You are not as likely to see RUclips fountain pen personalities but I heard that Drew Brown was there after I had left. Charmaine Dulak of Love Charmaine said she was there.
glad you enjoyed the show and got to meet other penthusiasts! A lot of people from my penclub went up there so if I go next year I'll have people to hang out with. The problem is I don't want to buy anything... maybe ink, maybe stickers.
This was such a fun video to watch! I've only ever made it to the Ohio Pen Show, so it was a total treat to get to see a West Coast event. Beautiful new pens - totally jealous of all that abalone loveliness. And thanks for talking about how your experience with Kirk was. I've never booked a time at a show with him, but I think I might this coming November. Oh! If you get the chance to try the Pilot VP EFs again, see if you like it any better with an Iroshizuku ink. Years ago, I picked up the Champagne Decimo EF without trying it first, and I originally felt it was too scratchy, as well. Now, though, any time I ink it up with a really wet ink (like the Iroshizuku inks), I absolutely love it. It still drives me nuts every time I throw a dryer ink in it, but it balances out for me in the end. Wonderful video, as always. Thank you for sharing. 😍😍😍
Thanks for watching! I hope to make it to possibly Chicago next year, but I was glad to have SF as my first. It truly was so fun! Kirk was great to deal with - I booked the 30min slot ahead of time, and he worked on my pens so quickly. I'm sure I could have brought more for that time slot. He was very nice, but also very focused. Not too chatty! Thanks for the tip on the Pilot VP EF - I wonder what ink they had in it. I would assume it was a Pilot ink but not sure. I'll have to try it again!
Darn I would've loved to meet you - love your content! Glad you enjoyed this beautiful city, I live nearby and truly think that the whole Bay is incredible. Saturday general admission was definitely very overwhelming - we missed out on a bit, but will think about stopping by on Friday next year! enjoy your great haul!
Aww thank you! I wish I had more time to explore SF but was at least glad to get to Tartine! Yes, Saturday after 10am was crazy and I'm so glad I had the first two hours early access. I do hope to spend more time at the show next year!
No way! You're from Calgary?? Don't you wish we had our own pen show, or at the very least, somewhere in western Canada? Looks like it was a whole lot of fun!
I really want to attend a pen show, but I haven't gone to one yet. I am also a little nervous about it, since I don't know anyone personally in the pen community. What made you choose the San Francisco pen show for your first one?
Great question, Kathy! I chose it because it was cheaper for me to fly to San Francisco from where I am in Canada, versus going all the way to DC. My friend, Carola, was also going to be there and it helped me feel a lot better about it. I chose this one as well because so many people dubbed this pen show as the "fun one", and I agree! Don't ever hesitate to come on your own - there are meetups and seminars and people are so friendly and welcoming!
Last year, I arrived Friday. I didn't do the show that day. I did some sightseeing in SF instead, then hung out in the bar for "After Dark" with others in the FP community in the evening. Saturday, I was at the show the whole day. I didn't take any classes (although I am interested in the nib grinding course!) but I found the whole day plenty of time to wander. Then I went out for dinner Saturday evening with a couple of friends. I left early Sunday. So completely up to you!

I honestly wish I had more time. I've heard some people were there for only a few hours while some were there all three days. And there are so many vendors and lots of people to meet and talk to, that I could have spent all three days just doing multiple trips around the show. But everyone is different. I didn't attend any classes or seminars because I only had the one day and wanted to visit as many vendors as possible. But I agree with Kathleen - I would do all three days if I was doing seminars, too.
