I said it in the last ep, but damn making your videos 4:3 makes them so cozy. This is one of those games that looks like an indie game pretending to be an NES game but is actually an NES game.
Fire ‘n’ ice got recommended to me 2 months ago by a coworker. I played, and at first, it was dumb. The more I played, the more interested I got when I had to use my brain more. Towards the end, it was very difficult, but rewarding after I beat it. No help, no cheats, and 30000 hours of neglecting my family. Awesome game music, btw!!!
I love this game, probably because I love the challenge of puzzle games and don't mind a bit of head scratching. I have the Famicom version which has cool artwork that is 90s in a different way than the US release.
On the flipside this game also reminds me of a painful time early in my collecting when I chose to buy a PAL B version of this game (complete) OVER a copy of Earthbound (cart only). They were both offered to me at $70 AUD each (about $50 USD) and I will always regret my choice.
I saw this game on Nintendo Switch Online and tried it out, and oh my god this game is ridiculously underrated. Currently on 2-9 but i am 100% beating this game!
I'm stuck in a 80's/90's perspective of how culture was consumed back then and as such I often completely forget that many of these titles are not just available as roms but straight up legally available on modern systems. It's pretty awesome!
My mom used to absolutely love puzzle games in the NES/SNES days, and I remember us renting this game once and her beating it during the rental period. I was pretty young and could barely understand how to play it, but she blazed through it. I'll always remember that one of the bosses calls Dana an "upstart," a word I'd never heard before, and my mom had to teach me what it meant. There was also quite a debate in my family about whether Dana was a boy or a girl... it wasn't obvious to us at first...
Puzzle Games! I think I'm going to love them, 10 mins later I'm glancing over at Contra and Guerilla War, hearing the siren's call of guns blazing action.
Have both Solomons Key for the NES and Fire and Ice on the Amiga. They both had a very primative design and feel even back in the day but are still fun to play. I like the ideas and presentation of these games. Simple but somewhat different and original.
I just discovered this game recently when looking for games for my new ZX Spectrum Next computer. I downloaded the Spectrum version that came out around 2003 and I'm finding it fantastic.
I'm currently playing Icicle Race on C64 which is a port/clone of Fire n Ice, and I'm frustratingly stuck on world 7 - Round 3. The C64 version is near but not identical. There's an extra block of ice in a line which means when you drop the ice beneath it, you still can't climb up to get on top and finish the level. I was even following a NES Fire and Ice playthrough video and you can see by comparison that the two game maps are not quite identical. That one small details is making it impossible 😟
@@BigOleWords yes. I forgot the name of the game and they didn't believe that there was a game in my little rural video store that had a different game. But they had little Sampson and many other late release games. I bought about 25 games from them when they went under and I turned around and sold them cheap to buy my first SNES. its heartbreaking to see how much some of these are worth knowing I sold them for a buck. C'est la vie
This is my favourite puzzle game for NES. Have played it thru many times after discovering this gem! I just love this simle game mechanics so much, what i have search if you can get similar to another platforms, but it doest exist as same level than Solomon Keys have versions from gameboy to Amiga. Theres 50 bonus levels after completing first 100 levels and if someone love this game as much as i do there is 2 romhacks for this game (both released 2022) and those both are awesome and have more challenge than this orinal game 🙂
My immediate thought when I saw the title was the 1992 Amiga game about a coyote that throws ice cubes, Fire and Ice. RUclips seems to think the same, since that's the game shown below the description here, so I'm glad I'm no dumber than a pattern matching algorithm.
Haha whoops! I tried choosing the game Fire 'N Ice but the only thing that came up was Fire and Ice. That's only happened once before where I couldn't find the game I was talking about!
@@BigOleWords Oh it happens all the time. For example, one of the Doom RUclipsrs I watch, all of his videos are tagged with Minecraft. He didn't select it, I think RUclips is just recognising the vertical lines and flat planes, along with his history of posting "Minecraft" content (all Doom misidentified) and assuming it's Minecraft. It doesn't help that he's also just started doing Minecraft videos, but at least those are properly tagged.

0:11 - Fire 'N Ice is available on the NES app on the Switch, however, what annoys me is that for the game selection menu, they use the title screen for Fire 'N Ice instead of the actual box art, so it appears as a different size than the other games. Why would Nintendo have been afraid of being consistent? Is it the "warning label" that would be confusing since there is no cartridge? Were they worried people would be intimidated by it? They could have used the cartridge cover art that doesn't have the warning label then.
This reminds me of a Sega Genesis game called Junction that has an "H Rated" label on the cover art with the description: "High Level of Intellect Needed To Complete This Game" 🧠
@@Bubbabyte99 Ah, you're right! Guess I wasn't paying attention. Thank goodness they remedied that, for consistency (and for my OCD). It doesn't have the warning label, but at least it's the label art.
