How It's Made - 3D Patterned End Grain Cutting Board

- When the oil hits the wood at the end, the 3D effect nearly pops off the screen! This is a custom end grain cutting board that I built using maple, walnut & cherry hardwood. It’s an intricate board to put together with a lot of steps along the way but the end result is totally worth it. Make sure to subscribe for more custom woodworking videos and if you'd like to own this or another custom, handcrafted board, head over to my website for ordering. There's truly something to be said about having the right tools for the job, but the tools only do what they're supposed to do. The difference is the craftsman, and that's exactly why your work is so beautiful! I used to have lots of decent tools, but my mom got really sick. Sadly, we had to move closer to her doctors, and that meant I had to sell my house & most of my tools. It happened quick, and I got peanuts for them compared to what I paid for them. I kept a few but there's only so much room in an apartment's closet so I had to downsize again. Mom was sick for about 8 years but her final 3 were torture. I turned 40 on this past Sunday, and it was exactly 9 months after my mom died. I've just recently begun slowly getting tools (I have a place now so I can get back to it). My tools were my passion: I dreamt about them. Lol I used to sit in my shop and watch TV & smoke cigarettes in the middle of the night because my shop was actually in my basement and nothing is louder than a planer or jointer at 3AM in a 100-year old Baltimore rowhome. Just something about the smell of sawdust, glues & stains & paint, tobacco smoke and the hum of fluorescent light tubes that makes a guy happy. And absolutely NOTHING can make a guy willingly give up his shop... until his mom needs him. You know, the funny thing is I sit and think sometimes about having my shop and if I made the right decision in walking away from what I had. It took me 12 years to get to what I had and wonder if it was all worth it. That's where the funny part is: every single time I ask myself if I'd do it again, I come to the exact same conclusion: you're goddamn right I'd do it again! I miss my shop, my tools and the things I'd have made in those years, but the idea that I'd have had to let mom go to a nursing home or knowing she'd have suffered even more than she did? Nope. Now I can build myself a new shop and this time, I won't settle for decent or cheap tools. Or maybe I will... but the one thing I will always be is at peace with my choices. The same cannot be said about my brother.
Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble like that.. sometimes it just feels good to share with other people who have common interests.
Family 1st.
Absolutely beyond words as to how gorgeous this is. You are exceptionally talented. Thank you.
No more words for your exceptional woodwork job!
My favorite part is watching the oil bring the natural beauty of the wood out❣️❣️
This is cool. I made a cutting board like this when i was in school in the Late 70's but my pattern was different. The way you used the walnut to give it depth is clever, I wish i had one.
Fantastic job! A master piece. What a patience to make this board! Congrats

This was always my favorite design of his. Excellent work.
Absolutely AMAZING. I'm just getting into woodworking and I aspire to build a board like this. I just hope that I have the patience.
It looks so frickin' 3D!! Such an amazing illusion, I never would have thought it would look that good.
Wow! So fun to watch and amazing workpiece. I’m inspired.
Thank you for the video. That is a beautiful cutting board I love the contrast between the species of wood. Once you oiled the project it popped.
Wow... One of the most beautiful cutting boards I've ever seen.
Beautiful...
beautiful idea mate..... really I want to be like you
Its not his idea... i think he said it pretty clearly in the beginning of the video
I clicked on this video because the project seemed interesting and the first thing I saw were two adorable puppies playing, so obviously I had to give it a like immediately 😍
This is absolutely gorgeous.
WCB, any iteration of these configurations would make beautiful table tops. So by mixing the patterns is just outstanding not to mention a time consuming labor of love, creativity, design & style! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Very nice design! love the use of all the wood.
Beautiful finished piece. Great job.
Wow again. Huge cutting board. I love that. This design is amazing.
I love how the cherry board started with the tree feller's cut on one end. As a sawmiller, I see that shape all the time.
Absolutely gorgeous workmanship!
People often comment on projects of yesteryear saying "we would not be able to make those anymore, the craftsmen are no longer around". This video says otherwise, it is the most beautiful item i have seen in years, and i make beautiful stained glass windows!
You sir, are a true genius.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
@@ryanhawkins My pleasure, i will make a comment that i bet many people will agree with! The majority of todays youth would not know what this item is even used for! Imagine them trying to figure out the business end of a hammer/screwdriver/saw!
A lot of work and a great result. I hope whoever gets it realizes the amount of effort you put into it.
That's trippy, I love it. Awesome job.
That is gorgeous!!!! WOW!! Thank you for sharing
Simply amazing!!! Super great job!!!
WOW! Just perfect!
Geometry is mind blowingly fascinating. Seen many vids of board projects, this by far is the most aesthetically pleasing design. Clever stuff. Alot of work. Thanks for that
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
OMG- I love that! Wish I could do this- so much fun!
That's awesome! Lots of work. MTM Wood is what got me into woodworking from watching 1 video like 6 years ago.
this is literally so beautiful....im at a loss for words
I just have to say HOLY CRAP! THAT WAS AMAZING! LOVE IT.
Love your shop space. Can't wait to see it in 5-10 years. Cheers.
A work of art if ever I saw one, exceptional woodworking!
Outstanding! Beautifully done and crafted! I could never bare to use it as a cutting board!
Me either!!!
So wonderful, incredible!

Clever and beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Master piece. Just looking at it makes me tired. So much work! Amazing work
I loved watching you make this.
Outstanding concept and execution. Congratulations.
Simply gorgeous!!
I'm speechless. At Sur La Table, that's a $2,500 cutting board. There are no words for the beauty of that creation. I made one similar to that one, out of 5 of the most exotic woods on the planet.
Then I woke up.
Too bad were not neighbors. I could learn a lot from you.
Wow. Wow. Wow. Well done, sir.
Appreciate the kind comment my friend.🙂
Wow that looks incredible I want to make that someday I'm just getting into making cutting boards.
I don't know what is more impressive, the finished product or 5.7k likes and zero dislikes!!! Gorgeous work!!

Glad you liked it!
Wow! Phenominal! Very labour intensive but well worth it.
Fantastic job walking us through this. I'd only guessed at some of these steps, but overall it's way more doable than I'd imagined it.
This young man is a true wood artist!!!,
