- First State Bank in Parkersburg, Iowa, released surveillance video that shows a house being ripped apart by a tornado on May 25, 2008. The video was recorded from a camera inside the bank's drive-up ATM. It shows the house across the street being destroyed.

People underestimate the power of this storm. No house could survive 200+ mph winds
When you stick your roof on with a pritt-stick
House:I have a beautiful life!
Tornado:let me destroy your life!
construction quality would have been of little consequense in a tornado of this magnitude. Ef-5's simply obliviate any wooden frame structure. (Most brick structures as well)
WERE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD!! THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ
LOL😂😂👠ruby slippers hahhahaa
Vincent Marciano XD LETS FIND DA TIN MAN XDDDD
Vincent Marciano ,
What
The National Weather Service classified this tornado as an EF5...with wind speeds just over 200 mph.
Oh wow
they can destroy thin concrete walls because of the debris that is thrown out. F5's throw cars and trucks HUNDREDS of meters.. they can (and have) thrown RAIL cars !! You better have one hell of a reinforced concrete structure to protect you from that..
According to the EF scale, EF5 damage is total. Even the most reinforced structures we build are not capable of withstanding an EF5 tornado, which this twister was classified as by the NWS.
Wow. I'm a storm freak and this video is REALLY something to see. I pray for the people who might have been inside the home during this tornado - perhaps in the basement - that they survived and were uninjured. Heartbreaking to see their house & possessions being destroyed right in front of our eyes. Does anyone out there have ANY information on the owners of the house??
Here in Eastern Pennsylvania, we never get storms even close to that.
Haha I know your comment is 11 years old but I really hope you read this so you can tell me what you think about the EF2 that just hit us in southeast PA a week ago halloween night...
@@granddaddykaddy1788 thank goodness they alive 😌
Mr stark..I dont fell so good..
One tornado of similar strength to this one lifted a well anchored brick house off its foundation. The entire house was thrown and disintegrated in mid air.
The video cut off long before the center of the tornado passed over. Even so, it looks to me like those last gusts that are clearly visible have to be over 200mph. I think this new EF scale greatly underestimates tornado windspeeds.
We here in the Philadelphia area are very aware of the devastating flooding you folks in Iowa are experiencing. It is all over our news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you in Iowa who have lost everything - and I'm sure I speak for people all over the country who feel the same. We count ourselves lucky that we have been spared this devastation here in the east - but we always remember that there is no guarantee of safety anywhere.
reminded me a bit of what a house looks like when it gets hit by an atom bomb
Hollywood couldn't show it better!
*some guy in the house*
" o this is a good sandwich :), wait WTF is that noise...
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh holy shit WTF..."
and no ones ever heard of him again
Some say he's still trying to find the wizard and defeat the flying monkeys lol.
Amazing how powerful nature can be...and velocity of this wind is stunning.
I hope this house has insurance.
There was 3 female adults and 7 toddlers and 6 babies less than 9 months old.. yall know how I know cause my 7 1/2 month old son was inside. Some of yall and I pray none of yall will ever have to bury your children or a loved one without a body to bury, not knowing were the person is is so heart wrenching, till this day I cry knowing how scared each person was in that house had to be as the tornado leveled the house
Wow...that was intense.
Nice house, too.
the house litteraly vanished in dust it was like a sand castle blowing away in a movie it just vanished slowly from ttop to bottom😯☹🙁😦😱😨
damn, somebody forgot to watch the three little pigs tale :/
This was an EF5. Tornadoes of that strength can completely destroy structures whether they are made of wood, brick, concrete, or stone.
I hope they followed Bill Paxton and Helen Hunts example. Wrap a belt around some pipes and if a tornado flies right over you you're good to go.
@xensxtreme
F2 damage is the removal of the roof and would be surprised if many of you buildings had stone roofs.
An F3 can collapse brick walls as well as wood frame ones. I don't think stone would fare much better.
This was the Parkersburg Iowa EF5 I believe so no house really stood a chance against it. But yeah we got hit by an EF2 Halloween night like a week ago and it ripped the roofs off of maybe a dozen houses around here. Expensive homes too, but built recently so probably not as sturdy as homes constructed awhile back with brick and what have you
This was an EF5, you can tell because the pieces get pulled up and carried away rather than just blowing over in a pile.
correct... I live in WI, there was an EF-3 tornado in Kenosha this year in JANUARY !! A little odd, eh ?
A few weeks ago I'd have thought that was odd but I live just outside of Philadelphia PA, pretty far from tornado alley, and we just got hit by an EF2 Halloween night like a week ago. Guess they really can happen anywhere at anytime.
9 people died in this tornado. it was a mile wide and developed out of no where. it was actually a nice sunny day. thankfully it only hit the south end of town instead of a direct hit threw the center.
KCRG-TV News has this video up on their website, and in the story it says "The man who lives here didn't want to say anything about the video, but once again, he is doing fine and preparing to move on." It looks like he's doing okay, thank goodness, but what a shame for him to have lost his home this way.
@CyrusNixes
The worst of the tornado didn't hit this part of town. Only a relatively narrow portion of the tornado's path produced EF5 damage. The bank from which this footage was taken took EF2/EF3 damage so winds would have peaked at about 135 mph.
😱Oh my goodness
hope no one was in there
it stood no chance
a water tornado could form any time!!
Ok if house gets destroyed then how tf the camera doesent
Remember stupid ppl will tell ya if have a site built house ya house won't even be lifted off the ground.
You suck. Bad things can happen to anyone.
Damn nature, you´re scary!
@dragonridley The roof is no problem , we got second floors and are build of stone also . The roof is most times builded from stone plates .
Tornadoes are kinda cool but I hate to see them destroy shit. Such a nice house
Its Over 9000!!!
Why did the wind change direction all of a sudden?
When did that ACTUALLY happen?
THAT ROOF GOT SOME DISTANTS
Shh, don't tell them that.
If they have strokes they won't bother us anymore.
103 people: THAT WAS FUCKIN AWESOME!!! xD
6 people: Oh that poor house..
I really hope no person or animal was trapped in that house.
@peterkuhf
So such a house could probably fare fairly well in a low to moderate EF3, but a high end EF3 or stronger would still probably inflict serious damage.
Now this - is pretty terrifying!!
the ocean won't keep you safe!
Id be pissed if my house got destroyed and had this many youtube likes lol
That's why you should never live across the street from a bank. Also, tornados are attracted to grey homes.
There were people inside of this house at the time? :(
Wow, there's some angry people on RUclips. Loosen up, you might have a stroke.
How does the camera stay intact when trees are uprooted
You are so right, and I'll add one more comment I feel people get a false since of security with tornadoes because of these so called structures that can withstand large wedge tornadoes. thats a dangerous attitude the fastest recorded tornado was 318mph and you better believe there will be a much stronger tornado than that! so no matter what stucture your in or it's rating as far as wind. when a large tornado comes your way ya better find a basement and increase your odds of survival!!!!
lol this would be great for a 'ima chargin mah lazer!'
This video was made three months after I was born
I hope they are okay
Even if I did live in tornado zone and i was in the camera's place, I wouldnt be scared
DAMN! Tornadoes are awesome to look at, until they are right on top of you! I guess it's better to live on Earth, than to live in a gas giant planets' atmosphere! I couldn't imagine that! Neptune has 1500+ mph winds! If you were floating still in Neptune's clouds, your whole body would break the sound barrier if you were in those winds! Those storms make the storms on Earth look like calm weather!
Amen brother!
is this real?
Yes - it happened in a town not too far from where I live (Parkersburg, IA was this tornado).
This was a EF 3 tornado 🌪
@@RzETlol no it wasn't it was an EF5. Parkersburg Iowa 2008
no, it isn't
PIDGEOTTO WHAT DID YOU DO
@ProfessorIgor Yes, people really greatly underestimate the damage that tornadoes cause, especially higher end tornadoes, until they see it firsthand. Most people cannot comprehend buildings reduced to a concrete slab.
A message to everyone here: Pray you never get to see that kind of damage with your own eyes.
Even in those cases, was the tornado at F5/EF5 strength when it hit those structure. St to brick housing. That would explain a brick building collapsing but not being completely carried away.
An EF2 could carry a car and destroy a brick house. It's not how fast the wind is blowing, it's WHAT it's blowing.
Damn nature yah scary!
Tornado loves destroying roofs and leave the house naked
Yeah I love free porn 😂
Who's the camera guy?
I hope you were not serious on asking this... if so.. cctv.
Slenderman
The house
Thank god I sold that house a while before
That's sad:(
They must’ve used Elmer’s glue for that roof...
This was an EF5. No roof on Earth would be in tact after a direct hit.
Aaron Kadison it was a joke buddy
@@vicvictorymeepers2060 hey you never know these days lol. Look at some of the other comments. Someone said it's fake because nobody could hold a camera that still while they were so close to a tornado. Nevermind the fact that it was an ATM camera... 😂🤦🏻♂️
feel bad for the poor trees their back is probably broken XD
I saw it on the news, not impressed or scared
where’s the sound da
Why do you insist in building wooden houses in the most stricken areas? Americans never learn
Americans DO learn
Why do Europeans insist on thinking their brick houses could stand up to EF5 tornadoes? Europeans are notoriously smug and ignorant about anything outside of Western Europe. Which is why they literally think their pile of rocks could stand up to a storm that was rated 69 times as strong as the bomb that hit Hiroshima.
@abey3008
That very old school mickey mouse toon where ppl plays classical music while theres a tornado? o.o
No? Oh, okay then........ xD
insurance company still didn't pay I bet
Tornado? Or nuclear bomb?!?!
That is why I live by the ocean
Tsunami
potato juliean hahaha good one
hurricane
Laurel Cook that why you got hit by Katrina
Just live in Arizona, we don't have any natural disasters besides sweeping misery.
Poor house :(
That was my house nooo the stupid tornado i had 3 kids 2 pets and mother
parkersburg IA EF5 May 25th 2008
ok....why should we care. thats you.
Lol Thats right m8 you tell em!
hey guys could anyone tell me if this on the link is really a tornado forming or just some really odd storm system... we had a tornado a year ago here where I live in mexico which is on border with Texas.. we never had any history of tornadoes here but last year a huge f-4 twister hit us leaving death and destruction ... this year we have had some really bad weather... anyways check it out and tell me what you think.. thanks :)
