    ABOUT THE WORK
The Star Wars franchise needs no introduction; since the release of A New Hope in 1977, its many intergalactic battles have captured the imagination of an entire generation. The same could be said of John Williams, undoubtedly the most celebrated composer of our time, whose oeuvre includes the likes of Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and of course, Star Wars.
Deeply inspired by the Western classical tradition, Williams’ score to Star Wars borrows from works such as Erich Korngold’s Kings’ Row and Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Most notably, however, his music extensively employs Richard Wagner’s idea of the leitmotif-a musical phrase which represents a specific character or situation in the story. The Star Wars Orchestral Suite, composed in five movements, brings together the leitmotifs of some of the most iconic characters from the Star Wars universe, including Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Yoda, and more.
Star Wars is without a doubt the quintessential work of the orchestral pops repertoire, and DPops is beyond excited to be able to open today’s concert with a performance of it in its full form. Please enjoy our performance of Star Wars.
