This was an incredible talk thank you so much for making it publicly and freely available. As someone who’s never been in a university setting being able to participate in an ongoing process of learning through these discussions being made available and accessible is truly a gift that I wish more people had a willingness and ability to engage with.
Octavia Butler, herself, described 'Kindred' as a "grim fantasy," not science fiction. According to Butler, science fiction as a genre has to have accurate science in it. There is no accurate science element in 'Kindred.' There is time travel in it, but it does not touch on HOW the time travel happens at all. There is no flux capacitor or any attempt to explain how it happens. That is not the point of the book. 'Kindred' has been described as a genre defying book that is part "grim fantasy" and part fictional slave narrative/ memoir.

More engagement like this is necessary in and outside of academia.
