    Proper Winter tires... The usual comment of: "We only have snow a couple of days per year" does not matter. Winter tires are better than Summer tires when temperatures go below +7 degrees celcius.

      HotelGolf82 Winter tyres are better grip, but completely uneconomic and a uneccesary most the time. Even when it gets icey roads are normally gritted fine so you don't need them in UK. A less you need your car in bad weather its much more economic to take one day off every few years....

    That's the best seat in the house during a snowstorm. Your own living room window with a hot cup of Joe enjoying the show, better than a NFL game. Winter tyres effectively cost nothing as you can only wear out one set of tyres at a time. A spare set of wheels really don't cost much compared with the cost of the car. They should be mandatory from November to March.

      Azureecosse WINTER tyres are certainly NOT just for snow. They are significantly better on snow, slush, ice, mud, wet roads and indeed ANY time it is cold. They are much softer rubber and therefore work far better than summer tyres which are hard rubber.
      BUYING SENSE: If you buy winter tyres in the winter you must obviously expect to pay full price. If you buy them in the summer you should get about 30% discount - I did. I have a Mercedes E-Class and paid £108 per tyre for top class Nokian tyres; money well spent. I guarantee I could drive up the hill in the video with no problems whatsoever - AND stop coming DOWN the hill. Don't forget that braking and steering are just as important as traction - and 4 wheel drive doesn't help one iota with those.

    • @Nevalti
      @Nevalti 10 лет назад +1

      Azureecosse A lot of people don't realise the HUGE benefit of soft rubber. If in doubt - ask a Formula 1 driver!
      As for 'need', many of us country-folk get up before dawn and drive many miles on un-salted roads. We 'need' the best tyres possible. Most town dwellers have NEVER experienced black ice and probably don't even know what it is.
      Snow: A car with narrow tyres cuts through snow and can get a reasonable grip - that is why the Fiesta (?) in the video did well. A car with wide tyres floats on a bed of compressed snow and may sit there helplessly. Stiff treads, such as on high speed rating tyres, low profile tyres and run-flat tyres make it even worse - which is why BMWs are often struggling the most.

    • @Nevalti
      @Nevalti 10 лет назад +1

      Azureecosse Oh dear, one of those strange people who think they knows it all. Apparently you are here to lecture us - about your OPINIONS rather than facts.
      I suggest that you refrain from making silly assumptions young lady and confine yourself to facts. The FACTS are that winter tyres are safer in cold weather. THAT is what they are designed for. Their performance in snow is just one benefit out of many.
      IF you can think of any significant disadvantage to using winter tyres, in the winter, someone may be interested to hear your opinion.

    Pointer1: Get going from 2nd gear, hardly any gas. You don't want to break traction as that will polish off the snow under the tyre and turn it into ice. Ride the clutch on the verge of stalling.
    2: If at all possible don't stop if going uphill.
    3: Get as much weight as possible on the drive axle. Put your mother-in-law in the boot if it's a RWD and ask 2 folks to sit on your wheel arches if it's FWD (just to get going).
    4: Get a Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Evo and you don't need any help :))

    It is 2016 now and tire (tyre) retailers sell tires that are mid-way between 3-season and winter tires; softer than 3-season tires, but not as soft as pure winter tires. They are almost as good as winter tires, but in the summer they don't wear away so quickly like winter tires would, so they can be kept on the car all winter and all summer long, no changing of tires needed. These tires are called "ALL WEATHER" tires. I live in Ontario Canada, and here its suicide to drive in the winter without winter tires. Those 'All Weather' tires are just not good enough here.

    Along with my post about Winter Tyres, they are not just for snow/ice but for all driving conditions when the temperatures are below +7oC ( which in the UK means going to work and coming home in the evening during the winter months are well below +7oC so will massively help ).
    Also a winter tyre doing 30mph will stop 11m shorter than a normal tyre doing 20mph at +7oC or below......which could mean the difference between life or death.....or at least an expensive insurance claim.

      +nightflyer1100 Snow in London (belive it or not) is actually very rare, not because the weather it's mild due to the Gulf stream and low pressures from N Atlantic, but also since it's a big city with too much heating elements under the ground which will melt snow even if it's below -5 Celsius.
      In other words people in London are far from used to drive in snow, so don't blame them!

    • @Hugo030-b3v
      @Hugo030-b3v 8 лет назад +1

      Faronstream
      I blame them because they should be using winter or all season tires from mid November till mid March ish. The last time I went to Toyota Kingston, the rep tried to convince me I don't need winter tires since temperatures never go below 7 degrees Celsius in London. This was in October this year. I asked him if he realises that the previous day it was 2 degrees in 5:30 am when I started driving to work and he said he didn't know because he wakes up at 8 o'clock because he starts work at 9 in the morning. People are stupid, ignorant, stubborn and ill educated in London, this is why it's a disaster on the roads when it's icy, snowy or just cold. So many accidents due to summer tires becoming harder and increasing breaking distance when temperature is below 7 degrees... It's just ridiculous!

    • @bird718

    Hi Azureecosse,
    Cont.... driving in the Savoie part of the French Alps ( I accept there are vast differences between the Alps and the UK ) , but I would never drive in winter condition's in either without winter tyres just from the breaking under control ( stopping straight and not spinning the car on ice , snow etc ) and the reducing of breaking distances side of things.After all a winter tyre at 30mph will stop 11m shorter than a normal tyre at 20mph on ice,snow and wet roads below +7oC.Cont.

You're putting everyone in danger including yourself without a winter prepared car.
    This would be no problem in Finland since we have proper tiers, we deal with similar conditions all through the winter.

    Winter tyres aren't just for snowy conditions.. they're for when the temperature on the road is below freezing and up to 10C. Because summer tyres harden in cold conditions so they can't form a connection to the road properly.. hence whey they slip etc. winter tyres are made of a softer compound that flexes and the tread bonds better to the road surface. So winter tyres should be used between Nov - March. when the temperature is likely to be below 10 C.

  • @LFC-Star
    @LFC-Star 11 лет назад

    It's not for just "one week a year" winter tyres are when the temperature is below zero and 10 C.. because summer tyres (regular tyres) work better when the temp is above 10 C and the roads are dry. Typically the temperatures between Nov & March are between below 0 C - 10 C. Are when winter tyres should be used. because cold weather hardens the rubber on summer tyres, hence less grip as the tyre is unable to form a good grip and bond to the road surface.

    Oi, Lahndahn, may I suggest two lengths of rope in the boot? Tie them to a wheel spoke, then weave them over the tyre and back through the spokes until the tyre has a grippy rope tread. Move forward a bit to get the rest of the tyre and you will have enough grip to get you up most hills. Pretty sure there is a you tube video to show you how!
    Me? I have snow tyres, but then I live in the Highlands of Scotland so I expect cold weather.
    Dahn't be a muppet, get it sorted ;-p (in your best London geezer Micky Flanagan accent, which I love)
    Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

    Oh dear. The usual winter chaos. All about knowing HOW to drive and react in adverse weather conditions. Most people select the wrong gear, rev the guts out of the motor and are clueless. As for automatic transmission in snow.......chocolate and fireguard spring to mind.........best advice......if you cannot drive in snow......stay at home. Then again, our local authorities cannot deal with winter weather either......double - edged sword here.

      The police should have closed the road to uphill traffic as the down hill traffic was behaving in a sensible way & while it was closed could have shovelled the uphill side & called for the plough & gritter to make it safe then repeat the process for the downhill side as all the dangerous antisocial behavior was on the uphill side as is always the case why do the behave correctly when going down hill but behave like idiots when going uphill? it does not make sense.as going uphill is more dangerous & damaging for vehicles flooring it constitutes dangerous driving & this should be made a specific offence as not only is it highly dangerous & damaging for the vehicle it also causes a dreadful noise nuisance which is distressing & painful to listen to which sounds like a cat in distress as this idiotic behavior is totally unnesscary as why should residents in this street have to put up with this dreadful racket? in my view NO ONE should be allowed to drive on the roads until they have been cleared & made safe .

    Hi Azureecosse,
    One thing I would like to see introduced is during the driving lessons people take before their driving test , a few lessons on a skid pan should be made a requirement to teach people the appropriate method's of driving under slippy and hard to control conditions, as many whom are just passing their tests presently will have never had any experience of driving in winter weather...just a thought.
    Happy New Year to all :)

    Cheapest solution would be to put gravel and salt on the road and clear it from the snow.
    Winter tires would be smart but if it snows very rarely, it doesn't make much sense for everyone to buy winter tires.

    Yeah, i dont know about the laws in UK, they might be illegal there. Same thing with the crushed stone, you throw them in front of the tire to get you moving. the best kind of sand for that use is something like 5-10mm in diameter per grain, it bites nicely to the ice when you drive over it

    I live in montreal, and had a toyota cressida along with a gmc safari, both rwd cars, they did just fine with all season tires in winter and even better with winter tires. rwd cars require a little bit of skill driving in snowy areas. tended to get a lot of fishtailing action, but overall only time i really had trouble was when the big storms came down 20+. But i understand why many have trouble there, unlike us where we get instant cleaning due to the commonality of the storms. Cheers everyone

    Hi Azureecosse,
    Up to a point I agree , but in the UK for 3 - 4 months of the year the average daily temperature for going to work and coming home is below +7oC , and as winter tyres are for rain , ice , slush , frost as well as ice and snow they are a safer option than normal tyres. I agree also about yout technique comment, a lot of things are 80% technique and 20% equipment, but if you have the wrong equipment all the technique in the world wont help, I've spent the last 20 yrs driving cont.

    "trying to push the 2 ton car"... it doesn't work like that... it didn't matter if it's 1, 2 or 3 tons... one person can help... it just needs a tiny little bit of momentum to get moving once the tyres get grip.
