KTM Superduke R Revisited | I've Tried The Rest Still The Best?? 🤔

  • Last year I spent a couple of weeks riding the brand new KTM Superduke 1290 R and absolutely loved it, I even made it my bike of 2020. For 2021 however there has been some top new competition arrived on the market. So the question is, has the Superduke still got what it takes to be 'The Daddy' of the supernakeds?

      Ha! Me too. When mine got delivered, the sales guy couldn't believe when I said "I've never seen a gen 3 before "😂.
      First ride, knew it was supposed to be a fire breather, so I put it in street mode (lowest throttle response full power mode) full electronic nannies etc. Putter ed slowly to 3rd gear, then held on real tight and thought "let's see what a quick ish burst of 25% throttle will do....". Both handlebars ripped out of my hands and only the pillion seat kept me from sliding right off the back😂😂.

      That’s how I bought my gen 1. Walked into the dealership with a check for a different bike, saw that black gen 1 on the showroom floor, and walked out an hour later with a brand new KTM bottle opener and an SDR to match… I placed my order for the gen 3 as soon as they went on sale and rode it 600 miles home the day I picked it up

      I like mine in Performance mode. And if I'm riding tighter roads or track, I put the suspension into Sport mode and set the preload to Auto-Hard or deliberately set it to 60% preload, which is a little rougher but works nicely. On more open roads and regular riding, I put the suspension in Auto. But yes, I have an Evo.

    You are the best reviewer by far! You made reference to a situation I had with my tuned 2018 Super Duke 1290 R. I was riding my bike and a little tired on day. I made a turn and needed to make an immediate lane change to turn left at the next intersection. I grabbed a handful of throttle in what must have been first gear. The front end bounced a few times and I almost lost it. I would have to say, you are the only one on this planet that has mentioned “Whiskey Throttle “. Lol BTW my bike is still in one piece. From that point on I made a cognitive decision to only ride that bike when I am fully on my game because that bike will chew me up if I let it. But that is why we love it because it scares us a little.

    Nice review John, thank you. As you know I'm a Speed Triple 1050 owner and I think the SDR will win out against the others on my next update. As much as the Speed is a great machine I'm not brand loyal and fancy a change. The looks of the SDR are Marmite but I like it, particularly once it's had a few mods added. I don't think you can beat the sound of the Tuono but the SDR is a more all round practical machine still with buckets of fun.

      The Gen 3 really knows how to finish a corner, something that all Aprilias require more muscle to do. I am an Aprilia guy for over a decade and for a street bike, I have zero complaints with what KTM have done to this bike. And it was cheaper after freight, taxes and a 5 year extended warranty + Tech Pack than the base MSRP on a Tuono Factory.

    A very fair assessment of the rankings of the super nakeds; thanks Mr. Chops. I’d put the Tuono slightly ahead of the Duke, but as you say, nitpicking really. As great as these big nakeds are, I’m coming round to the conclusion that, for UK roads at least, smaller capacity, light weight is the way to go, for reasons you know too well. Using smaller bikes to their (near max’) is great fun without the worry, which is why I’m hoping you might consider slinging your leg over the forthcoming KTM390 Duke R. For the money, with the new upgrades it should be a riotously fun (and cheap) bike to ride and own.

    • @Samarth916
      @Samarth916 2 года назад +1

      Your opinion is a mature one. I too believe that lesser weight is a priority specially in the 4 stroke, Euro 5 era where everything gets heavier.
      I own the Duke 390 2013 version and I tell you, in Indian market, even years later there's no proper replacement that's better in every matter. Even Duke 390 itself got heavier due to BS4 and BS6 emission standards (mine is BS3).
      Mine is the same old raw grunt that made KTM famous here. Go ahead wth the Duke, you can't go wrong with them.

    I had the 2020 and now have the 2021. I only ride with the suspension in sport mode. You should try it. The handlings is more precise and sharper. I didn’t like 👍 suspension in standard mode I could feel the rear end move around a little bit and the front end felt a little more vague. Little bit more of a rougher ride but worth it.

    • @RobertKehl

      Also if you want a more planted front end feel all you have to do is raise the forks up one or two notches. I currently have mine on the 3rd line. You can go one or two more lines down from that to get a even more planted feel. I like the 3rd line because the bike steer quicker and there less weigh on my wrist. There is so many way to set this bike up. Then there the rear preload adjuster for even more fine tuning your angle of attack.

      Good advice. The bars are adjustable too, just moving them a little forward would make the front feel more planted, especially on track. I have the Evo and can set the preload about a dozen different ways, that alone makes the bike much more flexible. Turn it down or to auto for comfort, give it 50% or more for sport riding or use one of many presets including auto-hard, auto-med, auto-soft. Just amazing.

    Great Vid, Mr Chops. I got the tech pack included in the new purchase price of my 2021 bike and a great PX deal for my old bike (MT09).
    I fitted the little plastic spacers in the throttle and it really helps with the initial throttle modulation.
    Agree with all of your comments, quick shifter... performance.... road handling are all fantastic, my only bug bear is the indicator switch (I have seen lots of online complaints on this). The comment of it being a "wobbly tooth" is spot on and it can take several attempts to cancel the indicators (the auto cancel does work but often not as soon as you need so as not to send the wrong message to others).
    Sorry I just cant accept the Tuono as a naked, great bike but it really is an RSV with a "saw off" fairing and bars replacing the clip on's.
    Final point..... why didn't you mention that you can fit a regular size Cornish pasty under the saddle??? (not the giant obviously LOL!!).

    I have a gen 3 SDR and I’d have to respectfully disagree with the opinion of the suspension… the front is adjustable and also has the red rings on the shafts of the front fork to help you gauge on how much you’d have to set it up. With that I feel like it mops the floor of all the bikes… especially with that adjustable rear shock right there as well 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think KTM definitely knocked it out of the park. Other than that man loved the vid and ride safe brother 💪🏼

    Hello from France. Superb review as always !!! I have thoroughlly tried the Triumph and Tuono and got to the SDR gen3 on replacement of my Gen2. I hated the imprecise gear box on the Speed triple. Tuono is superb but no duo at all possible and it heats more…. Duo is not a nightmare on this SDR. Enough room under seat to carry 2 disc blocks which is not a detail ! Wonderful personality and engine présence even at low revs’ and speed …. The Tuono with Its amazing soins needs more speed to enjoy : even more of a driver’s licence predator. Only real weak point for me : the unprecise fuel gage : skipping from 70 kms of autonomy to 20 in 10 kms …. I fully agree with you : this SDR is a wonderful happy making everday Bike ! And perfect for big guys like you and me (I am 205 Lbs and 190 cm tall : speed triple looks very small under me …..)

      I rode the two back to back recently while my gen 2 1290r was being serviced, 890 first and loved it, so much better than the 790 but after riding the gen 3 1290 around Snowdonia for a full 2 hours it really was king. Can definitely see myself upgrading next spring.

Finally managed to get one a couple of weeks ago and am in love with it. Enjoy the channel a lot and really looking forward to the reviews on the many new machines landing in 2022! Thank you!

    I loved this bike when I rode it back in June. You feel very much like your are sitting on it as opposed to sitting in it as with the Speed Triple RS. The Speed RS Triple felt like it lacked soul compared to the SDR 3.0 which has bags and bags of character. Agree with everything said here. LC is a far better rider than I shall ever be. We await a review of the recently announced Speed Triple RR RS with electronic suspension. I would be so pissed off now if I had bought a new Speed Triple RS when Triumph had definitely said the RS was it, no further modifications or upgrades were on the cards. Yeah right.

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 2 года назад

      @Casey R. How do you know you'd still take the RS instead of the new Speed RR? The RR hasn't even been released yet let alone on sale in dealers!

    • @alaincaspar2148
      @alaincaspar2148 2 года назад

      A bike will always be upgraded ! And they will never tell you it will be upgraded when they just put it on the market ! That's so childish to be pissed off by that ! One thing for sur, we can't say you are sitting in the Speed Triple 1200 RS : strange you say that or you mixed up in and on as you are more in the KTM and on the Triumph (and I prefer the KTM for that, although it is good also with the Triumph). Character wise most people confond torque at low rpm and character : put a lower gear and you'll see if it lacks character lol

    Hi lamb Chop, I don't know if you remember me but I'm the super duke addict who lives in S/W France currently on my 5th 1290. I'm sending you this message with a link to one of my son's videos that he took in Spain last week. I'd like you to see it because it gives you an idea of the sort of roads we ride in Spain & this is just one amongst many. It was a test video with a borrowed camera so the perspective isn't great but it should give you a good idea, try & watch it all if you can & you'll see me at the very end on my 1290. The roads here are probably some of the very best maybe in the world & I would like for other people to know about it & that is why I would like you to come down & try them for yourself. In fact I love the region so much that I bought a place there & it's only about 3 hrs from my house in France. This particular road is about 50 km of fantastic bends & scenery. Also I'm thinking that maybe we could get a few tours going hopefully next year. Anyway here's the link & let me know what you think

    I enjoy the engine braking on the StreetFighter. But I own one so I'm biased 😂. However, the KTM is my second favorite super naked. That engine is sublime, love the torque. I wonder if they still use a lot of oil?

    Good catch up review Chops, it is still the Daddy (but I'm biased), just such a shame the gen3 has lost the burble and pop on the overrun. On a different note, those shorty type gloves really worry me, there's exposed skin in normal riding so there'd be a lot more if you were sliding down the road (don't try it, please). Leaves your wrists and forearms so exposed, makes me shudder a bit.

    • @ShamanWS6
      @ShamanWS6 7 месяцев назад

      Funny, I find the vibrations very good on this bike, a big sporting twin needs about 4500-5000 rpm which seems to be most of the problem, people keep riding them like they're an old Harley or something. Every big twin I've ridden is the same, my old Tuono, RC-51 et al Whereas the S1000R I rode made my feet and hands numb, and the owner had filled the bars with something (i forget, maybe lead shot?) to try and stop the incessant bar buzz of the BMW.

    Chops..is not having electronic suspension a deal breaker for you, i am tempted to get the SDR or Speed 1200 RS but knowing my luck i will buy it then a new model with electronic suspension will come out, its one of those i have never had so not to sure if its a must have now days. Cheers and great video. I wish my local dealers allowed demo rides so I could test it out and buy it but will never get a chance to buy one.

    • @ShamanWS6
      @ShamanWS6 7 месяцев назад

      I have an Evo. I wouldn't say it's a deal-breaker but if you do frequent two-up riding or you change weight, riders or carry lots of stuff with you every now and then, the auto preload / auto sag is worth a lot to me. Also sometimes you want to tear ass and the suspension will accomodate that or a smoother ride if you're tired. It's a nice thing to have.

    I love the idea of having a superduke I always liked the look of the older generation and this new one looks even better but as someone who rides all year round and really only had road experience on supermotos I suspect the superduke would be too much for me and it definitely looks like the kinda bike you don't wanna be caught riding in the rain with that amount of power yes the electronics are there to save your ass but I suspect it wouldn't be an enjoyable experience 🙈 which also makes me wonder would it go mostly unused as the UK weather is utter shite 90% of the year. anyway nice review keep the videos coming
