Other countries, such as Thailand, celebrate similar festivals. The Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai is renowned for its sky lantern release, where people make merit by sending lanterns into the sky, signifying the letting go of misfortune. In Japan, during the Obon Festival, people light floating lanterns and send them down rivers to honor the spirits of their ancestors.
Modern iterations of these festivals have taken on more artistic expressions. Lantern festivals have become tourist attractions in many parts of the world, with large-scale displays featuring intricate designs, light shows, and sometimes interactive elements.
