This comment has me screaming because I’m thinking the same thing compared to how I thought she was just being mean when I saw this movie when I was younger.
Before the whole TV fracas, Carolyn was getting on Woody over another bounced check he wrote. So she went and opened a separate account so that it wouldn't happen again. Woody was trying to compose music his own way which was not bringing any income according to Carolyn. She was already frustrated but the whole TV thing was everything boiling over.
You would have to be a struggling artist whom LOVES (not simply “like”) music to understand the argument between Woody and Carolyn. I love music and I love creating it. I don’t have a job so, I couldn’t help a woman to save my life but, as someone whom loves to create and write music such as Woody; we don’t see having a “regular job” as being of our ilk. Even if we know the music isn’t raking in any or enough money, we still believe in and hope that one day- we will be able to make a decent living off of what we LOVE doing. Point is- Woody loved making music, and he wanted to make a living off of what he LOVES to do. Music is near and dear to his heart. If you don’t write music or aspire to do it, you simply could never empathize with Woody or myself. Our creating music is all we have. It allows us to unwind and escape, even if it’s only for a moment. There is no real “light switch” or “on-and-off button” once you dedicate yourself to life as a musician, a rapper, a saxophone player, etc. I totally get your perspective as a woman but, as a man who sees Woody in myself (Pause on that 😅) - this is the male perspective. We just wanna create music and be happy. Nothing more, nothing less.
@@corelltemple2939 the issue is , Woody had a family to take care of. At some point you have to be realistic about the situation around you. If he was a single man that wanted to live the life of a struggling artist, then that would be his business. But he had a wife and kids. in this thing called life, we can't always do what we LOVE. most of the time we just have to do what needs to be done. he was the man of the house and he should've been focusing on providing for his family. that was not something that his wife should been doing on her own. he was a poor excuse of a man and i would've left him long ago.

Imagine having to give birth to all of those kids, clean up after them all, your mind and body going through all of those changes, then going to work. And then out the blue one day, your husband decides he wants to be irresponsible and only focus on himself after you just birthed all of his kids. On top of that you have an illness. Women do what they have to do because we love our family but that’s lot of stress on your body. It seems like all you men can ever see is the male perspective. Y’all should try putting yourselves in our shoes.

However he still made it kind current for the 90s too. When it’s a bunch of kids in the house, chaos is bound to happen. This scene truly shows how the mom and dad were not able to coparent. I believe you shouldn’t show the kids

I wonder if this was a problem in a lot of families at the time? The mother goes out and gets a job, then wonders why her husband gets to make the decisions. When the unemployment levels went up in the early 80's, I imagine a lot of wives became the sole breadwinners. Divorce rates went up too.
I don't like the mother's energy (but Alfre is great!) however, if you're talking to someone who pays the bills, you say "Yes Ma'am" and keep it moving, and never discount your partner's decision right in front of the children.

Just finished watching the movie 5 minutes ago. Easily, 1 of the beautifulest movie I've ever seen in my life! Our own lil BK version of "Children of Heaven" :)
When I first saw this movie almost 10 years ago, I thought the mom was being abusive and I didn’t understand what was going on originally. When my mom explained it to me, I switched sides and I feel sorry for the mom and pissed that the dad didn’t support the mom since she made a good point. When she grabbed the son with the glasses I laughed hysterically. This reminds me when I saw a family fight one time tumbling down the stairs when I was 6 and I was so confused
This is the complete fault of the father for the whole thing. He has a family and he is being very selfish. The mother is tired and needs help financially. He needs to find a full time job and a weekend gig to support his family. The music isn't paying the bills and his wife is angry at him for it.
This story is one of my fave it really frame the black family in the that time. My mother who was born in 50s said it reminded her of her childhood to a T
