I still watch this vid every time right before I cut my hair, for inspiration. The top of my hair is too long now and it drapes down to my ears... feels weird when I have a #1 cut. @@oxbadcode6573 thanks brotherrrr!! Ive cut the top a bit and it feels soooo much better now.. but its not the way I want it. But youre right, itll grow back and I feel like im getting better and better every cut. I did mess up the sides and went up a bit too high and it curves over a bit, but that was last week and its grown a lot since so, its almost time to cut again.
Just tried this technique on myself and honestly, it looks better and is easier to do than what I've tried from other tutorials before (granted, most of them were for self made fades, which are more detail orientiert due to their short length).

Thick rims don’t hold up, but I will continue to cut my hair at home from your other tutorials, as I have been doing the last 2 years. I learned to do it by feel and judgement. I like my fade. #3 on top and #2-1-0 on the sides/back. The lever on my Wall clipper is useful to blend. Grateful I have thick hair at 62 years old. Thank you for your kindness.

This is great, I now sport a very nice haircut! I tried other tutorials from other channels, where they faded it in three layers using a 3,2,1...but I could never get rid of the hard lines, hence it never looked any where near as good as it did in the tutorials. For the first time doing it myself I have a great hair cut without the hard lines...thank you once again!!!

Amazing tutorial for the sides. I’ve added a step for sideburns/nape where I use a 1/2 guard open lever to closed. Then for the top of the head I have a #10 guard and #16 for the fringe then scissor cut the fringe to make sure it’s even which I also learned on this channel. All in all it’s better than any “super cuts haircut” but obviously not anything near what I’d get from a pro barber. Thanks again!

4:02 This is so key for me (an armchair pandemic self-barber). So often when I go a barbers & ask for a No.1 on the sides they go too high & eat into that area way too much. It makes the haircut look too harsh, almost like a cheap military cut, when I want it to look like yours.

I don't think I have been to a barber, I may of be when I was small but I can always remember my parents cut my hair, now I do it with a big mirror and hold one with one hand and slow speed trimming

I remember watching this when it was new and I was scared to try it. Now 2 years later I am pretty confident doing a zero fade on myself. Its still not perfect yet but I can get it so it looks half decent.
Anything half decent and above is pretty good.

Thanks Adrian, theoretically the the .5 guard (half) is the same as no guard but lever open. For some reason though the plastic .5 guard seems to make a better job. So both are the same length but the half guard for some reason which I will investigate makes the job easier. It can be done without

I took the leap and had a go at cutting my own hair this weekend. Went half decent thankyou to your videos so thankyou very much! Easy method and I can tell practise will make perfect. Can you recommend a good set of starter clippers? Mine died half way through. I'm happy with the result though, and saves paying £12 to get a cut I was never happy with anyway. Thanks a lot!

Appreciate your videos explaining how to cut the sides, helped me a lot, I was making a few mistakes before I found you! I have a question about cutting the top, I am trying to decide between 2 methods: Your #3 'with the grain' method (which you say thins the hair), versus using a super long #12 guard 'against the grain'. Does one method have an advantage/disadvantage over the other? You seem to prefer the with the grain method? Cheers from locked down Auckland
What happens sometimes with the very long guards is the hair collapses or bends before it reaches the blade. Not a big issue really though. It just means you need to make lots of passes. Also using a #12 will make it uniformly the same length. It is also fine to do that. The with the grain method will probably leave it longer than a #12 but be thinner.
Hi, of the myriads of self cut videos, yours is best, glad I found you. Getting ready to do self cut for first time but my clippers don’t have a lever and they have 2 left and right “taper ear guard combs”. Can you explain what these are and how to use them and how I can fade without a lever? When I go to barber I ask for a 1.5 (guard not mm) on sides and back and “messy” on top. I have very thin straight hair mostly grey…
I like that salt and pepper look. It looks distinguished. Those taper guards are a mystery to me. I know exactly what you are talking about but I have never used them. Let me know if you do and how you get on. And good luck with your cut.

BTW …. what's the general rule if you want to use, say, a #2 or #3 instead of a closer trim with a #1?
Thank you Mac, the rule is exactly the same. But for longer numbers you can often get away with just using that number only.
In this video I'm going higher with a two to try and buff out the dark area around the parietal ridge. Longer numbers are easier because the skin is not as visible and two tone.

Closed. The lever is only useful when blending short numbers together like a zero into a one. Otherwise you never need it

Follow up question on my previous one: Would using the n.1 guard, then a 1.5 guard and then a n.2 guard give the same results? Instead of using a n.1, a n.2 and then a n.1.5? Basically using the 1, then go slightly higher with the 1.5 and then use the 2. Thanks for the help.
Yes that is also a system I use regularly. And makes perfect sense.
When we do the sides and the back with the number 1, are we making that lining artificially, or would we gain that lining/shape simply by following the instructions to go straight upwards with the clipper?

I'm assuming you mean the line that appears around the parietal ridge and occipital bone. Ideally you want to make every effort to get rid of any lines on the first pass with the one. We already know that won't work but it will soften the work that the #2 has afterwards. Hope I've explained that ok.
Another great video dude! Just wondering how I would blend the No.2 into a No6 onto? I basically want to buzcutt my entire head to a No.6 guard and then go froma 1, 1.5 to a 2 like in this video. I hope this makes sense :)
Hi Craig. I think the easiest and most achievable method for blending in is the method I use to blend in this video. It's not what your going to get from a pro but it's can look pretty good. Thanks for the video. I am struggling to understand something: when you use the n.2 guard you follow the same steps you already did with the n.1 guard? Or do you go a little bit higher than you went with the n.1 guard?
Go slightly higher with the #2 but don't round over onto the top. The idea is to make the upward stroke so it is cutting something but not very much.

I just tried it for the very first time and failed spectacularly (it was my fault), but if I didn't have a guide and tried to do it the way I originally intended there would be no person on earth capable of fixing that. For this cut if I only have a 4mm to 6mm attachment and my little thing on the side of the clipper ranges from 0.5 to 2, could I use the 4.5mm for my 1 the 6 for my 2 and then something in between like 5mm or 5.5mm for my middle?
Yes. So normally 1 is 3mm and 2 is 6mm
So I would use the lever to add two extra grades in between, 4 mm and 5mm
In your case just 4 5 6 should be fine and blend nicely

Yes it's actually much easier with a 4 and a 3. Those numbers don't show up mistakes so obviously.

You could possibly just make the guard a little bit longer. Or try blending down the way with a number three like I do in this video.

When cutting the sides, do you comb your top hair to the side youre cutting or brush everything to the middle?
Get all the hair going in its natural direction. The only thing to keep out of the action is the fringe.

Great video as always, Michael. One question - you say about shaving straight up. I find that if you do this correctly you don't really need to rely on a mirror too much, although you still need one- would you agree with this statement?
Another thing - you went straight up with a number one, right? How come you were able to go up with a number 2 and still get hair to come off? I would have assumed that, if you were following the same angle with the number 2 as you were the number 1, that no hair would have come off due to the number 2's guard being longer.

Good question ink. As I go up with the 2 I make my angle ever so slightly tighter. If you've not done this before try doing it carefully so you take nothing off. Then keep tightening the angle until you hear the hair cutting.
Also you can do it without the mirror. But the mirror let's you examine how the cut is progressing and if you've missed anything, plus it's always good to have a look at your handsome face while you work.

The upside down method is used to remove the weight where the top and sides meet. But because it's not against the grain it won't cut close enough to be useful blending in a one.
Been cutting my own hair for over 10 years now 9mm on top and 3mm on the sides, I'll try the blending in method next time but my hair clipper needs replacing i now use the babyliss pro 45 which i have nearly 10 years now but i would like to try something new .... any recommendations ? I'm considering the wahl magic clip
Wahl magic clip are excellent quality and will last you another 10 years easily

Thanks Michael, would a guard 3 or 4 with the clipper work too? Could 2 shorten the side fringe too much? I previously tried scissors which worked, but top half was cut, and bottom half of hair wasn't cut lol...so I made a disconnect step... 😅
3 or 4 would actually be a lot easier.
But keep that 2 away from the fringe. Or comb the fringe to the side out of the way if you're using it.

is it possible to make a fade using 1,5mm 4,5mm and blending the line with 3mm? Not sure if it will look good
You are getting the idea Kev, that is essentially what many barbers do, they just go through the range of guards available
When you go straight off the sides with a #2 to remove the "weight" are you going higher than the parietal ridge ? It looks like you are going into the top "cave - in " area. Thanks
And when would you know to use this method over the upside comb attachment method....attachment combs under #3 ???
The upside down method doesn't work when trying to remove the shade difference. it doesn't cut close enough.
I still use the straight up method with the two but tighten the angle ever so slightly until I hear the blade cutting.

Yes you can if you feel confident. The only thing I will say is that the blade with no guard is less forgiving, any small discrepancy will be more visible

You could possibly soften the join by using a number two then not going as high again with a 1.5? Might work

Do you have the lever open or closed?
Always closed unless there is a line that appears above the area you've been cutting. I often join a #1 into a #2 with a #1 and a half. (#1 with the lever down)

Why wouldn't you go upside down with the number 2 (straight down) to blend the sides like your other videos ?
You could. But the 2 upside down won't make much of an impact going down on a one. You need to go up to catch the hair against the grain.
You need to areas of hair that are not more than 3mm in length difference. Going against the grain ensures that.

No it simply refers to the name of the guard. #1 = 3mm
#2 = 6mm

What if you didn’t want it so high?? I have hair about an inch and a half longer than yours at the top ( before u cut it ) I do scissor cut it but it’s so thick I have thinning shears but I only chop the tips which does nothing , thanks
I'd need to make a video on that one. Cutting it lower if a lot harder. It's not as simple as the straight up method.
With thinning shears and the length your hair is. You can cut the end third of the hair with the thinners. This will remove bulk whilst reducing the risk of puffing and popping. (Puffing and popping is another video also)

I’d probably just call it a simple short back and sides or 1 on the sides.
@@theoneminutebarber I've been doing a similar hairstyle on myself using a 0.5 going straight off the head. Then from the parietal ridge downwards I went from n.2 to 1 open, 1 closed and then 0.5 open. It blends right in. Is that another viable way to do it in your opinion?
