Eurovision - Why some songs got Zero points? Analysis of detailed results. How close it was?

- As we all know, according to the current system of voting in the Eurovision Song Contest, juries and televoters of each country make their tops from the least favourite to favourite and their tops 10 receive points (1st place - 12 points, 2nd - 10 points, ... , 10th place - 1 point). At the same time, all the places from 11th to dead last get the same amount of points - zero. So, if some country isn't in top 10 of any voting country, it gets zero points in the relevant category (jury, televoting, overall). Let's look at the zero pointers since Eurovision 2014 and find out how close they were to getting at least one point? Results are actually quite interesting. Enjoy)
Eurovision songs that got zero points from 2014 to 2021:
Old system (Jury/Televote 50/50)
Austria 2015 - The Makemakes - I Am Yours (by the televoting and overall in the Final) (host country)
Germany 2015 - Ann Sophie - Black Smoke (by the overall points in the Final)
New system (jury and televoting results are split)
Czech Republic 2016 - Gabriela Guncikova - I Stand (by the televoting in the Final)
Malta 2017 - Claudia Faniello - Breathlessly (by the televoting in the Semi Final 2)
San Marino 2017 - Valentina Monetta and Jimmie Wilson - Spirit of the Night (by the jury voting in the Semi Final 2)
Austria 2017 - Nathan Trent - Running on Air (by the televoting in the Final)
Spain 2017 - Manel Navarro - Do It for Your Lover (by the jury voting in the Final)
Iceland 2018 - Ari Olafsson - Our Choice (by the televoting in the Semi Final 1)
Austria 2019 - Paenda - Limits (by the televoting in the Semi Final 2)
Israel 2019 - Kobi Marimi - Home (by the jury voting in the Final)
Germany 2019 - Sisters - Sister (by the televoting in the Final)
2020 - we will never know :(
Czech Republic 2021 - Benny Cristo - Omaga (by the televoting in the Semi Final 2)
The Netherlands 2021 - Jeangu Macrooy - Birh of a New Age (by the televoting in the Final)
Spain 2021 - Blas Canto - Voy a quedarme (by the televoting in the Final)
Germany 2021 - Jendrik - I Don't Feel Hate (by the televoting in the Final)
United Kingdom 2021 - James Newman - Embers (by the jury and televoting in the Final)
About Spain 2017: I put here the clip from the jury final. Don't forget, juries and televoters watch different shows. He got 0 points from juries, so it's fair to show that moment from the show for juries here where his voice crack (or not?) sounded different from the televote show that everyone knows.
No, it's just proof they just hated the song.
Это с прямого эфира выступление, он в самом конце петуха дал
Black Smoke was great!
Yes
In all fairness, if UK got a few pity points no one would remember the song anymore but the double 0 made James a legend and an icon
Right!
He choked and his carrier has gone downhill
And he was a good sportsman about it too
honestly I really liked the "zero points squad" 2021. They are great personalities and I liked the songs (even if they were not the greatest). Blas Canto and James Newman even recorded a song together! And it wont happen, but I wish a little bit they all 4 will make a performance in ESC together as interval act. This could be so cool^^
You're so positive☺
Personal opinion but the songs weren't bad
Especially spain
It was a great and beautiful song
Germany had a pretty fun cool and cheering song it was kinda cute to me
Sometimes the voting is just unfair
@@conserztasfia0078 Of course, the songs were not bad
That even Armenia voted for Azerbaijan note, i laughed so hard 😁 And UK once more got lots of last places. I like the song but live performance is really underwhelming.

I am from Azerbai̇jan and I laughed my lungs off 🤣🤣🤣
@@fyr_og_flamme_vasil This is a song contest. The singer standing on the stage has nothing to do in relationships between countries. I am from Armenia and I can openly say Azerbaijan really puts in their entries and always have something interesting and catchy.
@@GagoAlaverdyan yeah that's true
But there’s a problem that Armenian and Azerbaijani people are brainwashed so hard that all their juries and televoters almost always put each other dead last. It was really surprising when Armenian televoters votes for Azerbaijan more than for Iceland in 2018, that’s reality, what can we do😢
Belgium was also close from zero points and the fun fact is that The Netherlands didn’t save them from zero points it was Lithuania and Ukraine which saved them.
Yeah, it was really surprising. Lithuanian commentator liked them so hard that televoters gave them 2 points) Lithuanian juries liked them even more actually)
Ukraine and Russia saved Australia from a Televoting 0 in the semi by 1 point each.
@@TheMosquitto Yeah, these countries actually liked the song)
Actually, if Belgium did receive 0 points, it would have been a first for ESC history that 5 countries got 0 points in any contest.
Ukraine Italy Iceland and Finland devoured all of the televote in 2021
France
Sad French noises...
I think UK 2021 was a good song, it just wasn't Eurovision material. It's perfect radio pop from the motherland of pop. Honestly, you can play this song up and down the radio stations no problem and it's a good tune. It doesn't stand out in Eurovision, though. It just got... washed over by the other participants I guess? That's how I felt when I watched the grand final. I didn't voe for UK either (sorry, UK).
Absolutely true. I mean, it's for Eurovision, it's represents UK as a country quite well... but every other entry will overshadow it, yes
It’s fine, we’re used to it now. Although I do feel that sometimes people don’t vote just because it’s the UK
that song got zero radio play in the UK!
I honestly thought it was quite catchy and one of the catchiest songs we've sent. The song WAS played all the time in radio 1 leading up to the contest.
If it was perfect radio pop, radios would play it. The song failed to chart anywhere, including the UK.
Will you make an updated video, including 2022's zero pointers?
Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 - 0 points from televoting (semi final 2)
Germany 🇩🇪 - 0 points from jury (final)
Switzerland 🇨🇭 - 0 points from televoting (final)
The note I'll take from this is that Germany isn't hated by the public, but has bad luck sometimes.
Sure, the amount of dislikes for "I don't feel hate" are almost mindbending, but what I can say for sure is that it polarised And although many dislked it, many also liked it very much,
Yes, it's called divisive songs
i always find it so funny that usually the countries with more neighbors have higher chances at getting many points and then there is us germans with the most neighboring countries that never get votes from their neighbors 😂
Yeah, it's been a long time when Western and central European countries stopped voting for each other for any song. Block voting is still alive only in Balkans, Scandinavians + Baltics and former USSR
Block voting is often based on similiar countries having similar taste. If you send a Balkan ballad, it's more likely to be popular in Balkans than elsewhere. The geography doesn't matter that much.
Maybe cos u genocided most of them :)
It's really interesting and I think this highlights something I've been saying for a while, only awarding points to 10 songs probably works fine when there are 12-15 songs. When you have 26 songs however you're saying that 11th place and 26th place are equal which seems like madness to me. If you've got 26 songs then awarding points to the top 20 seems to me to be much fairer.
then maybe the scoring system will be changed to 1 to 18, 20 and 22 :v feel pretty weird that if they changed the top 10 to top 20, the infamous douze points would no longer be existed and instead it will be vingt deux points :v
"Even Armenia voted for Azerbaijan more than this." - How you know you've managed to send a, like, impressively terrible Eurovision entry. Just as getting Cyprus or Greece's 12 points would be the biggest sign of dominance.
This is one of the most interesting videos about Eurovision!
Thanks)
Poor Claudia Faniello the song was dedicated to her brother because he was about to die during that time.
:(
But without knowing it the song is very boring
@@escserg6731 true, but at least lyrics are meaningful.
But I agree, melody is boring and it wasn't enough to qualify.
Fabrizio ?!
@@escpikayohann4760 yeah..
That same thing goes to Spain 2021, in which Blas dedicated that song to his grandmother who died of Covid. Unfortunately, the song is just a generic ballad, despite the amazing vocal performance of Blas Canto (Sorry for those who liked this song).
I actually love I am yours, it's so nice. I get black smoke though
Has anybody realised that Cyprus and Greece will never have fewer than 24 points?
Of course, they also have some other friendly countries. So, I would say, they will never have fewer than 48 points, at least. By the way, their juries and televoters not always give each other 12 points, for example, Greece gave only 10 points to Cyprus in jury voting and only 8 points in televoting in 2015 (it was hidden in the old 50/50 system)
@@escserg6731 thanks for the info, cheers
In 2015 neither of them gave each other 12 tho👀
@@pasqualinoabbadini5261 Yeah, the songs were not strong enough (Cyprus, at least)
@@escserg6731 Cyprus was too bad in 2015 to give it 12 even politically

You're welcome)
Still can't belive how uk got 0 points in total 2021. I liked that song
OK, so, it seems like I was the only person in Estonia, who voted for Germany 2021.
I also wanted to vote for Germany in 2019, but after all I voted for Denmark. That would be ironic, if I vote for them that time.
Germany deserved atleast 20 points this year
Shame- I loved the UK and Spain 2021 entries
Same!
I think it's necessary to give points to more than 10 countries... It really worked well for many years when there were like 18 songs, but now with 26 songs I think it doesn't.
My proposal would be countries giving also 9s and 11s points, and maybe spokespersons could say the 11s and the 12s not only the 12s as they are doing now. However I think we won't see that at least in some years...
Very intresting facts.... It started to make me wonder the opposite... Songs that was SAVED from having zero by blockvoting or simular....
a good idea for a video)
Some countries are guaranteed to never come last, meaning some countries have a very high chance of placing last. Cough, UK, cough. No neighbouring country likes the UK enough to just award points based on their political relationship and Australia doesn't seem to either. The UK lives or dies on the quality of its entry - they either deliver a masterpiece or are doomed to fail. I'm not even sure the UK could win ever again quite frankly. Even if the UK sent the best Eurovision song ever, I think it might only get a top ten finish at most.
@@80PercentScottish 60 years of history... a lot of things has happend... and will happend
So fun fact if you add the half zero points 2021 would actually have the most zero points ever because Czechia, Spain, the Netherlands, and Germany all got half zero points and the uk got full zero points.
You're right, this year has the most zero points, we don't usually count "half-zeros"
Wow, interesting... I really liked The Makemakes in 2015, Ari Olafsson in 2018, Kobi Marimi in 2019, and Jeangu Macrooy and Blas Cantó in 2021...
It seems you are a so-called harbinger of failure, at least when it comes to music or to ESC specifically. Google the term ;)
Where did you find all countries' televotes with all places? Again will be really interesting to go through this material

2021 you can find in official Eurovision site right now
before 2021 - the best sourse is Wikipedia, link looks like that:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest_, put instead of any country and year and you will see how this country voted that year in semi final and final, in all details
Somebody update this video so we can include the 0 points from 2022!
James newman did not deserve 0 points :(
But now everyone remember him as a person who got double zero for the first time ever (even if we consider it since 2009 where juries were introduced along with the televoters for the first time). If he got 5 points, for example, he would've bee just in the same row with Germany, Spain and Netherlands this year, Manel Navarro and etc who got zero in one category and some small amount of points from another one.
Would you be interested in making a video about the average placement of every country in jury and televote and combine them to see what the result would be then? I am always very curious how mediocre songs would do then. For example if Italy had average rank of 4.6 with the jury and 3.8 with the televote then they got 8.4 total. And just rank them like that. This sugestion is aplicable for any year. I just hope you have time and interest to do it.
Yeah, it's a good idea, some people do such rankings for every year, thanks 2013 results that EBU released (average rankings instead of real points, they definitely hide something). Search on RUclips, probably there's already such video
@@escserg6731 I tried searching on youtube and i failed to find any videos for any recent year. That's why i decided to propose my idea to you.
@@svetoslavlalev3847 OK)
Thank you for making this video!
You're welcome :)
One thing I’ve come to realize trought the video is that slow ballads aren’t always the once finishing last. It tends to be non-favorites and the starting number in that particular semifinal.
Why should it be slow ballads? They always have some amout of fans, especially including Eurovision juries that have 50% votes. The most lackluster song on stage that doesn't work for both juries and televoters usually finishes last
@@escserg6731 True however, ballads during the early-to-mid 2010’s didn’t do that well until the point split.
Interesting analysis. However, it also points out how the discrepancy between some of these songs. Namely, Czech Republic 2016, and especially Austria 2017 shouldn't be equated with the rest, because their 0 was only from one of the 2 fronts (namely, televoting), and only in the finals. Technically, they outperformed every single non-qualifying song that year (including, but not limited to fan-favorites like Verona, Hear Them Calling, Play, and Blackbird), and in Trent's case, jury has skyrocketed him right around the middle of the final score. All in all, hardly a flop, even if it didn't attract telephone response from the viewers. Every other song here scored zero on their first attempt, either in the semi, or by being an automatic qualifier who couldn't score lower by default.
By the way, many of these songs are actually quite good, but that's subjective.
OK) I looked at all the zeros in any category here) The overall zero have only Austria & Germany 2015 and UK 2021, it's too few)
For me the biggest problem is that the songs can be heard months before the show
It's definitely one of the problems. The contest becomes more and more commercial every year, and commercial success plays a bigger role for every song. If we look at the top 26 this year we'll see that the order is almost the same as the order of being in charts in different countries
@@escserg6731 Yep, I think the result would be much different if the songs would be heard the first time at the contest
2016: 0 points to Czech Republic.
2017: With 0 points, it is Austria.
2019: Germany, you received from the public votes… I’m sorry. 0 points.
About 2018, while it’s extremely hard that this actually happened, it’s possible that both Azerbaijan and Iceland got exactly 0 votes from Armenia, but since Azerbaijan performed earlier, it finished above Iceland
Nope, it's impossible) Maybe they just had the same amount of votes, not exactly 0))) And don't forget, probably, at least 1% Armenian/Azerbaijani people have to be not brainwashed that much, just according to mathematical part of our world)
@@escserg6731 Agree. 2009 was a great example.
Yeah, but remember when Azerbaiujan received 1 point from Armenia in 2009? They would have received if we used our current system.
If you want a bit of insight into why Israel 2019 it's probably worth checking out a video in which another You Tuber talks about the Eurovision performances he found the most disappointing. What particularly sticks in my mind is the guy's ugly crying and why the commentator has good reason to believe it was faked - juries may well have picked up on that and penalised it accordingly.
Actually, we can simply say that juries are not always into all the ballads. For example, North Macedonia this year came last by juries in the semi final (?!), it was even more shocking for me
It doesn't have to be either or so yes we can. I don't think Vasil was last with the juries though wasn't it Ireland? It was a really tough semi to this year and I think it's Here I Stand wasn't a great song even though Vasil is a great singer and he seems a great guy although it's not a popularity contest which would also have been tough this year as most of the performers seem to be really nice and cool people. Oh by the way the video is from alexandrumic if you want to check it out.

I think feel that the main reason the Czech Republic this year (2021) didn't get top 10 places in the televoting was that he forgot some of the lyrics. Even if you hear the song for the first time, you could sense that somewhere near the last chorus you can tell he forgot his lines.

What you say is proved by the results of 2013, which televote and jury points are not revealed but only the middle placement in both categories. Spain was last in both and Ireland was in the middle in both, but Ireland ended up dead last. Probably Ireland didn't manage to get in the top 10 of most of the country's jury and televote while Spain was low for almost every countries but still reached the top 10 more times than Ireland, or maybe reached the top 10 with a higher placement

I think the reason Ireland didn't give the UK a ton of points just because of being neighbours could've been because of Brexit

2022 update?
The new system is good but honestly it’s very far from perfect, the system used in 2013 which made averages rankings for both jury and tele is the fairest (in my opinion)
But these average rankings were released in 2013 just because EBU doesn't wanna show us real points (maybe someone cheated with votes?). In 2013 points were counted in the same way as in 2014 and 2015, we pick average ranks of juries and televoters and give points in that order. I think that 2013 - 2015 system was the worst possible, it allowed juries and televoters hate. For example, televoters coulld've put some song 2nd and juries 22nd (because of hate) and it could've been 0 points out of 12 overall while with the new system it's just 10 out of 24. Now we don't loose any points
@@escserg6731 I get ur point but I was thinking of giving rankings from jury and tele separately (the same as they do now) and not combine the jury and tele (as they did at 2013-2015) so it will be fair. After the show they can reveal how each country did the rankings, to keep the transparency the same as it is now.
You will never find a system that everyone is happy with but the current system makes for a much better television. It's not interesting when you know the winner half way through the voting and if people don't tune in to watch the show dies.
@@ztoical I understand, but I think that the jury and the tele should never be combined like 2013-15 voting system (it’s the most boring and the least fair system). I was thinking of using the ranking system but giving the jury and the tele results separately (the same as we do now) but instead of points (1 to 12) we use rankings (25 or 26 to 1)
@@solensol7782 It would've been really funny, just imagine a scoreboard with thousands of points :) I wish they would do it in one random year, just for fun :) (because they'll never do it seriously, it's just way too "not for usual people", no one will understand it)
I WONT STAND FOR THIS CZECHIA 2016 SLANDER.
4:01 I definetly remember that Belarus jury gave Israel 12 points
Those votes were discarded, the belarusian jury published the votes before the show
Belrusian jury votes were disqualified, instead of them producers took the average places of Russian, Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani juries. But they picked the bottom 10 instead of top 10 by an accident :))) So, Israel "got" 12 points instead of last place, they fixed it after the show.
I knew the sroty, but didn't knows that they did an oopsie with the results in the end
I’m sorry. 0 points.
Simply james newman song was bland and he has vocal problems.
Didn’t Israel 2019 get 12 points
From belarus yes, but because of some stuff I don't understand. It wasn't legitamate, so it's still 0
They disqualified real Belarusian jury votes and made them up "artifically": they just picked average places of Russian, Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani jury votes. But they somehow picked their bottom 10 instead of top 10 lol) That's how Israel got 12 points
2017 was not the strongest? WHAT?! There were LOADS of really good songs! 2018 and 2021 were the weak years!
Hmmmm... OK, I appreciate unpopular opinions, I'm full of them myself)
Not sure about 2018. 2018 has a lot of genre diversity than 2017 especially with a lot of countries sending songs in their native languages
How is that an 'unpopular opinion'? There are so many entries people liked from that year.
When the top two or three songs have the highest amount of points ever I don't think it's unpopular to say 2017 was one of the best Eurovision years. There were entries that were breakthroughs for Portugal, Bulgaria, Hungary, Belgium and even the UK, entries that were better than what they normal send, if not the second or third best things those countries have sent.
@@TheManInBlueFlames Well youve got a point though. I may also say it for these year. People say 2021 was a strong year and yet 4 countries were left with 0 televote points because a lot people voted for the top 3. Technically speaking, 2011 which people call a weak year, is technically the strongest. I mean, if you use the current system, every country (ecept poor last place Switzerland) gets a total of at least 100 pts.
I don't know why people continue to think Ireland and the UK help each other out in Eurovision voting 🤣. We don't! There's a fair amount of animosity between our countries, especially from Ireland towards the UK - there is no bloc voting here. Now, if England, Wales and Scotland competed separately, we would see them all vote for each other for sure, but not for England.
Look why I thought so:
- in 2019 the only 3 televoting points UK got were from Ireland. In the 2nd semi final, the only 3 televoting points Ireland got were from UK.
- In 2018 Ireland gave UK 10 televoting points, more than any other country. UK also gave Ireland 10 televoting points in the final.
And etc. So, UK and Ireland previously had some kind of block voting. Of course, it wasn't as strong as with some other countries. UK and Ireland used to give each other like 2-4 points, not too many but not zero either. So, I was really surprised that Ireland had UK only 21st in 2021 while in 2019, only 2 years ago, they saved them from the televoting zero with not a better song by 3 points that means 8th place. From 8th televoting place to 21st in 2 years)
The United Kingdom being in here once will still say Europe is specifically hating on them and targeting them even though clearly Spain and Germany would have more right to complain but at least they understand it’s because of the songs they’re sending rather than blaming everyone that’s supposed to vote for them
Right)
