What do you think most of school is? It’s teaching them how to think rationally and problem solve. Even if you may not need to know how to solve quadratic equations or the date that whatever treaty was signed it’s training your mind on how to solve problems and retain information.
@geterhero I would have to disagree with this, in no way is school actually teaching problem solving skills nor independent thought in fact it actually punishes this, you can see the effect as when children 1st go into school they are happy and want to learn and as they reach adolescence they tend to be more reserved. This is as a result of always needing to be right and you are generally shamed if your through process is different than what is taught. And problem solving skills are generally just not taught, there aren't many open ended problems in school, the primary goal is to just teach how to memorize certain equations and facts. The reason schools are like this is because they were originally meant for rich people. This means that the whole system is built from top to bottom and they already expect for you to understand these concepts even If they don't know it this is the system that is enforced by school, there is a book called Outwitting the devil by napoleon hill, it's a great read and describes in surprising accuracy how school is harming children even if you are not religious you can take the whole message as a metaphor and come out with a deeper understanding. Although I will mention the books main theme is more about in general how the devil takes control of you and causes you to fail by procrastinating and things as such, the book was written in the 1920-30s and was almost not released because at the time the public would not have liked the message
