Browser/Device Fingerprinting In a Nutshell

  • Digital fingerprinting is the process where a remote site or service gathers little bits of information about a user's machine, and puts those pieces together to form a unique picture, or "fingerprint," of the user's device.
    The main two forms of fingerprinting are browser fingerprinting, and device fingerprinting.

    Nice video as always, I just have a small suggestion: when you're showing a chunk of text you're reading from on screen (like at 0:14), try adding a highlighter animation or something similar to highlight the exact piece you're reading. It keeps the video visually interesting and gives viewers something to look at while they're listening to you.

    • @Zeutomehr
      @Zeutomehr 3 года назад +2

      I'd have to disagree. I hate those highlighters, I just find them to be distracting.
      Maybe break up the text into multiple parts or something?

    • @čelična_alhemičarka
      @čelična_alhemičarka 3 года назад +3

      @@Zeutomehr yeah, smaller bits of text, maybe two lines or so at a time, would work just as well

    The EFF's tool Cover Your Tracks (formerly Panopticlick) is very eye-opening and show what kinds of information can be collected, and how difficult it is to do anything about it. 😕 The more you try to scrub information, the more unusual (read unique) your system becomes. 🤦

    1) What about the Brave browser, is it safe as well?
    2) Are extensions save? Especially ad-blocking extensions. I once needed to disable my adblocker on a bank website, are those ad-blocking saving data?

    • @chmtech
      @chmtech  3 года назад +6

      From what I have learned, Brave does do a good job, but it does not make you fingerprint-proof. Extensions can block one thing, but they emit their own set of characteristics which again can be used for fingerprinting.

    I would of liked to hear more about apples latest push for privacy compared to google, given how apple is far less dependent on collecting data and more focused on hardware/OS, where as googles entire business model with things like maps, search, etc get their leg up/rely on mass data collection (and even more-so, facebook)

    I heard Gmail has a Keystroke logger whenever you type emails using a desktop browser and that that those keystrokes can be used to ID a person on any computer by matching your typing rhythms to their database

    • @rxadam4611
      @rxadam4611 2 года назад +1

      This is true. There is a certain algorithm used by agencies that can analyse bodies of text and recognise typing mannerisms that could possibly be tied to a person

    RUclips algorithm is so annoying :/
    Once in a while I have to check your channel to see what new videos are there! They almost never show up on my feed. I don't like upload notifications, but I just had to enable them for you :/
    Seriously you should contact RUclips support to see what's might be wrong.

    • @ravitejaknts
      @ravitejaknts 3 года назад

      The problem with RUclips Algorithm is consistency. RUclips bots can't decide what content is good or bad, they just recommend videos that are either viral or from channels that upload consistently. CHM Tech videos never went viral and he also isn't consitent.

    I'm personally using fingerprints for ban actions.
    For example:
    user_A: fingerprint -> 1509b17
    user_B: fingerprint -> 1509b17
    user_C: fingerprint -> b3b3d9f
    Whenever any user with the fingerprint "1509b17" get's banned the fingerprint and the accounts linked to it get banned. So people with the fingerprint lose access to their account and can't create any more accounts.

      true. but if those who need to hide their browser fingerprints will find it useful. Cuz they need to bypass IP tracking. Maybe they run multiple accounts for social media marketing and avoid being banned. so it's not only about privacy

      Google finds out about your political leanings based on your browsing history. If their politics don't align with yours then they can make things like Google searches difficult, by hiding the results they don't want you to see and showing you things they do want you to see.
