After spending way too much time researching pianos (but not being able to test them in person), this is what seems to come out:
    - Yamaha: best for appearance and overall sound in headphones. This what I would pick if you plan to mainly play digital piano at home, especially through headphones.
    - Casio: best for action. This is what I would pick if you are mainly using it to practice - in supplement to having an acoustic piano, or supplementing regular performances on acoustic.
    - Kawai: good at basically everything. This is what I would pick if you want to balance silent practice at home with developing feel for acoustic.
    More details:
    # Appearance
    1. Yamaha - looks great, nice details in the shape (e.g. music stand shape), available in polished ebony, Yamaha logo looks sophisticated (logo size, placement, letter spacing). Look is a bit more modern to my eye.
    2. Kawai - looks good, but similar to a more traditional piano - so the styling just feels a bit older / more traditional.
    3. Casio - not a fan - the Bechstein plaque looks gaudy to me, the front red power light is not good placement, and frankly a Casio brand logo doesn't look great on expensive products (I would prefer they invent some name like Celviano or Privia and put that on). Since the Casio brand name goes on $5 watches I think it is better if they have a different branding for expensive products to distinguish them.
Note that although no Roland models were reviewed here, I feel that generally the Rolands look a bit too "digital" for my taste and less like acoustic pianos.
    # Action
I have not played these instruments, so this is just based on reading:
    1. Casio - most authentic mechanism (in theory), seems to have universally positive reviews on action
    2. Kawai - second most authentic mechanism (in theory), again very good action reviews
    3. Yamaha - action is a bit of a mystery (although I think the wood in the white keys is a solid piece, not stuck only to the sides as claimed. The former statement is based on a thread showing a breakdown of the key on recent Clavinovas, whereas the latter is a rumor that I think started based on a Casio dealer web site). Tim Praskins seems to like the action in his review of CLP 745, though.
    # Headphone sound
    1. Yamaha - Although I think the bass register could be improved, I find it to have the most sparkling and melodious tone in the middle and upper registers, and one which is quite natural. The binaural samples are universally praised and seem like they really enhance the headphone experience. I really like the sound of both the CFX and Bosendorfer for line out recordings.
    2. Kawai - I think the tone sounds quite natural but a bit more neutral and with less character than Yamaha. To me the same piece has a bit less impact on the Kawai, but others may prefer a more neutral sound.
    3. Casio - Although in principle I really like the 3 pianos they've chosen (even if they won't explicitly name them ...), the actual samples sound too digital to me. They do not sound as natural. It might be because the GP310 doesn't include the same resonance effects as the other two pianos (GP510 adds this), or for other reasons of the sampling, but to me they have a way to go to match the sound of the other 2 pianos.
Note that although no Roland models were reviewed here, I feel their modeling engine still does not quite sound natural like Yamaha or Kawai (it might be more expressive, though, I don't know).
    # Speaker sound
I have not tested these pianos in person so can't say. I was hoping this video would clarify the differences in speaker sound a bit, but honestly with the quality of the recording it is difficult to make any real judgements. Plus, I think one likely needs to sit at the piano and get the full spatial effect to really judge. So, no thoughts here.
Finally, note that depending on the market, there could be fairly significant difference in price. So if two pianos are neck and neck, why not save 15% or so and use it to buy music, lessons, etc.
Since I care mainly about playing a digital piano at home with headphones (not practicing for acoustic performances), and my wife really values appearance as this is going in a living room, we're going for Yamaha CLP 745 in polished ebony. But frankly these all seem like good choices! I think I'd be quite happy with the Kawai CA59 (or would upgrade to CA79); the Casio is not a good fit but there are much better piano players than me (e.g., Graham Fitch has a tutorial series on using the Casio) that chose this way. Happy hunting!

Besides, what you have to catch is that the sounds shown in this videos are not recorded in the room where the pianos are standing in but are rather got from USB device out. For me the winning sounds are Yamaha CFX, Casio Hamburg & Kawai EX, but in no particular order. I'm so glad that a reviewer has thought to offer us a second and third piano sound from each model. The EX is overlooked in so many reviews, but I really like that sound. I would probably buy the Yamaha, partly because I know Yamahas pretty well, and I'm confident I'd get a good playing experience. I'm impressed that Casio is holding its own with Yamaha and Kawai.
Update: On watching this review again, my opinion is hardly unchanged, except to say that I enjoyed the two Bösendorfer sounds a lot as well, and the Kawai SK sound. I still didn't enjoy the detuned upright or the Berlin sound or the SK5 so much. Maybe in another setting I would. In many recent reviews elsewhere I have disliked the EX sound, but have enjoyed the Casio Berlin sound. So this shows just how tricky it is to evaluate a piano online, with someone else playing it.

Hello Tony. Please be aware that you have made a mistake at 12:26 regarding the GrandTouch-S. The GrandTouch-S and GrandTouch use solid wood for the white keys. The picture you are displaying with wooden inserts corresponds to the Roland pianos with the PHA-50 action. That picture is shown in the Roland's website. Yamaha specifically clarifies that the white keys are made of solid wood. The black keys are synthetic ebony. The surface material of the white keys is synthetic ivory. Yamaha states, "GrandTouch-S keyboard of the CLP-745 features wooden keys that showcase Yamaha’s expertise with wood for pianos. Just as with grand piano keyboards, the solid wood is cut from the very best parts of well-dried lumber." On the other hand, Roland has been making that action you show with the "?" sign for a few years now, and they state in their website, "You’ll also appreciate the blend of artisan tradition and cutting-edge technology-sleek wooden sides give each white key a familiar feel". So, to summarize: Yamaha does NOT use wooden inserts on the sides in any of their digital pianos. That is the Roland PHA-50 action.

@@justinzhao9831 Hello Justin. My comment is actually old and I did have a chance to see a disassembled CLP-685 some time ago, probably the same one you refer to. I also contacted Yamaha regarding the GrandTouch and GrandTouch-S actions, but after my comment. Here is a more accurate description:
      1) There are two versions of the GrandTouch-S: one fully plastic (CLP-725, 735, 765GP) and one with solid blocks of wood (CLP-745), not wooden inserts in the sense of the Roland PHA-50. Those wooden blocks are then sandwiched between two pieces of plastic (up and down) that end in the fulcrum. The GrandTouch-S is a bit shorter than the GrandTouch.
      2) GrandTouch is never fully plastic. The white keys do not have wooden inserts in the sense of the Roland PHA-50 on the sides, or in the sense of the FATAR TP/400WOOD action (very similar to the PHA-50) present in the Studiologic Numa X Piano GT. GrandTouch does not have 100% fully wooden white keys, but they are not wooden inserts on the sides of plastic keys. They use a solid natural block of wood clamped top and bottom by plastic parts of the white keys attached to the pivot. Yamaha can claim they have wooden white keys made of solid natural pieces of wood, although this statement is a bit misleading because the white keys are not 100% made of wood.
      3) The article you probably mention is in a Chinese website. I have it, so don't worry about attaching it. In addition, there is a video in Korean language where a person shows the wooden blocks in the NWX action (basically the same but improved in the GrandTouch) is, indeed, a solid block of wood: he saws the white keys in multiple angles and shows they are made of solid wood in the sense described above.
While this type of action does not qualify as 100% wooden white keys, it is still very different from the one Roland uses in their PHA-50 or Grand Hybrid, or the one used by Studiologic Numa X Piano GT. Yamaha does use a wooden key... just not what we really think and expect as "wooden key".
By "wooden inserts" on the sides of the keys, I mean two thin stripes of wood veneer on the white plastic keys, which is what Roland does in their PHA-50. Yamaha uses an actual piece of solid wood in the white keys, but it does not extend to the entire key, it is about 70% of the key...

ROOM ACOUSTICS. Overlooked topic in piano sales. One aspect that makes a grand IMHO the best choice if one is looking for the ultimate in piano sound production. Just as there are ideal locations in any room to place a HiFi speaker there are for a piano. You cannot (or are unlikely to) put an upright in the middle or the room or 3 feet rom a wall. As you could a grand. Given you are single.
Hybrids. Can do so much more. More suited for homes. Families. But do have tradeoffs acoustically...which might be important to some. Looking for the ultimate in sound quality. Though, I'm sure the quality of an upright hybrid placed against a wall will still be more than acceptable. Can be more easily moved out of "null" spaces in a room which takes away sound..on the other hand no one says you can't place an upright 2 feet from a wall..

I didn't play the GP 310, but after trying the GP 510 and CA 79, I have to say that the GP 510 has such an incredible action. The only digital that I have tried and would put above it would have to be the Kawai NV10 (I am partial to grand piano actions, so take note of that). I really liked the Hamburg grand (Steinway?) on the Casio, but I liked how the CA 79 sounded better than the GP 510, but the way the keys felt as they bottomed out on the CA79 was a total deal breaker for me. The CA79 felt great on the way down (not totally like a real grand, but very close), but at the bottom it feel very wrong to me. The NV10 was perfect, but of course it was since it uses the actual Kawai grand piano action (the speakers didn't sound quite right though. I thought the GP 510 sounded a bit better on the speakers (worse in headphones), but I hear they improved that on the NV10S). I tried a bunch of similarly priced digitals by Roland and Yamaha, but was also not impressed by the actions. They just didn't feel like a grand, where the GP 510 really feels VERY close (grand feel III on the CA79 felt pretty good, but not quite right). I didn't really like the Berlin or Vienna grand sounds on the Casio nearly as much though. They were fine, but the Hamburg felt quite good in person.
    So TLDR:
I didn't try the exact pianos from this video, but I did try the slightly higher tier digitals.
Casio GP 510 was AMAZING, particularly the action and the Hamburg grand sound.
CA 79 action was great (much better than the Rolands or Yamahas I tried, but if you're not looking for the feel of a grand, you might have a different opinion), it sounded incredible for a digital, but the bottom of the action just didn't feel right.
I wasn't impressed by the Yamahas and Rolands that I encountered, but the store I went to (not a Bonners store) didn't have that many Yamahas so I may just not have tried the good ones.

Yamaha action is on the light side and it is basically a plastic action with wood inserts. Kawai and Casio keysticks are made of solid wood at full length. Casio is longest and it probably provides more control. Sound wise I think Kawai is the most accoustic like, mixing more ambience into its samples. But the round goes to Casio IMHO for its clarity. It is very subjective and so everyone can have his opinion. If you go by headphones most of the time Yamaha might be the best because of its bi-aural samples which are sampled from the player's perspective. Yamaha also has the most connection capabilities, Casio the least

@Sina Nazari It is important you play it before you buy, 735/745 are pretty light and fast. As you may know, the so-called escapement in a DP is just a notch in the action to similate the acoustic action feel. IMHO it is something a DP can do without. If you are used to playing acoustic you might want to try out NU1X, the escapement is almost real, and the price is in the same leaque as the more expensive DP on the list

Yamaha's connection capabilities are the same as the Kawai.
Except the Kawai has more sounds(44) and more drum beats(100).
Kawai also has Spatial Headphone Sound (SHS) three different acoustic presets that adjust the spatial positioning of the sound.
FORWARD Front focused.. somewhat narrow spatial positioning.
Normal.. (default) Naturally balanced spatial positioning that is neither forward nor wide.
      WIDE.. very open spatial positioning.
It also has headphone type selections as well..
      Normal.. (default) Disables headphone optimisation.
Open.. Optimises the sound for open type headphones.
Semi-open.. Optimises the sound for semi-open type headphones.
Closed.. Optimises the sound for closed type headphones.
Inner-ear.. Optimises the sound for inner-ear type headphones.
Canal.. Optimises the sound for canal-type headphones
So in real life when you are in front of the piano you can set the headphones how you like.
I don't believe the head phone placement effect on the Yamaha or the Kawai will come through a youtube video!
The headphone jacks on the pianos have there own dedicated special separate amplifiers that create the placement effect as though you are sitting in front of the piano.
They have both put a lot of work into this feature and I think you would have to try them both out in real life to try all the different settings on both. To see which you like, every ones ears are different.

The GrandTouch-S and GrandTouch use solid wood for the white keys. The picture displayed with wooden inserts corresponds to the Roland pianos with the PHA-50 action. Just as with grand piano keyboards, the solid wood is cut from the very best parts of well-dried lumber." On the other hand, Roland has been making that action shown with the "?" sign for a few years now, and they state in their website, "You’ll also appreciate the blend of artisan tradition and cutting-edge technology-sleek wooden sides give each white key a familiar feel". So, to summarize: Yamaha does NOT use wooden inserts on the sides in any of their digital pianos. That is the Roland PHA-50 action.

The clp-735 had it, but only very slightly because of the speakers underneath. The 745 with its forward firing "tweeters" made that very audible. And once you hear it its hard to unhear.
the CLP 600 range sounded better - not sure why or how its just does.
They keys on the CLP 745 were very nice however, but with a hard keybed on the bottom. Close enough to an acoustic upright.
The 59 keys feel much more natural and with a bit softer keybed, more like an actual piano.

I learnt more and got a 5 octave Casio keyboard now I cleared grade 3 and my brother grade 4, so we need a nice piano with nice sound quality and touch action, that's all we want.
      So we have 2 options
1 buy a ydp 164 now and after grade 6 buy a REALLY EPIC piano (most probably a good up right )
2 buy a nice digital piano now and the after grade 8 or so buy a REALLY EPIC piano ( or not cause I won't need it unless I go into professional music )
But the country I live in has very less support for expensive instruments and that means that if a buy a acustic up right piano I would have a lot of trouble in buying it, servicing and tuning etc so I thought that the 1st option would be good for me
I have played an up right piano in my piano academy and I know it's very nice

Using headphones it is extremely close to an acoustic Bechstein sound and the action is very close to the Bechsteins I grew up playing. The other two piano sounds are mediocre, IMO. I studied at the Mozarteum, which had many Bechsteins, they were practice pianos and were played pretty hard. I am VERY satisfied with the Casio. I have never liked the Yamaha and Kawai sound. Yamaha plays loud and soft but it's almost impossible to create different tones. I'm not as experienced with many Kawai grands to give a fair assessment. I've been playing for over 50 years and love playing via headphones and not disturbing other people in the house. I like to play late at night. Second demo: Yamaha sounds like a digital piano.. Casio is here again with this a bit unnaturally(?) bright sound. Kawai sound also kind of digital but I like this sound.

I've tested all 3 and ended up buying the Casio. Here's some info you might find useful and I wish I had when choosing:
Note: I am an advanced piano player (~Grade 8 ABRSM, playing pieces like the 3rd Movement of Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven). I was upgrading from a £300 keyboard to one I wouldn't need to upgrade again if my technique ever improved. Because of this my priorities and what I'm looking for may be different from what you're looking for.
For me the action is pretty much the only important factor in buying a digital piano and Casio won by a long shot. It's the only hybrid you can buy in this price range (Kawai and Yamaha Hybrids are ~£5000).
I played the Casio side by side with acoustics and couldn't tell the difference, it's that good. It's also the heaviest action of the 3. My music teachers and my friends (one of whom uses an acoustic piano) were all very impressed.
The Yamaha action is really not that great. You can certainly feel the lack of the full length stick. It's also the lightest action of the 3.
The Kawai was good but actually ended up worse than what I thought it would be. The CA49 and 59 both use the grand feel compact key action whereas the CA79 and 99 use the Grand Feel 3 action. The GF3 is very good but the Compact is not so much. You aren't able to do fast repetitions very well on the Kawai.
For me this left only the Casio as the piano I would feel comfortable buying.
Looks wise they're all similar and I really don't think you should let that get in the way of which instrument you choose. Some people are put off by the Casio logo, but I think that's a bit shallow. It certainly does not feel or look cheap. Maybe search up the history of Casio on RUclips and you might respect them more.
Sound wise they're all amazing. However, I'm not sure about the other pianos when it comes to this, but on the Casio speakers pretty much only the Berlin Grands (the Bechstein) sound good. When recording in software the other sounds are great, but when using the built in speakers for practice, only the Berlin Grand sounds good. For some reason the Hamburg and Vienna sound muffled. Still useable and you can get used to it after a minute or two, but the Berlin has a clarity to it which the others don't. Probably due to the piano being built in collaboration with Bechstein, I don't know. I don't think this should be a deal breaker for anyone though, since the main piano sounds amazing. Additionally, the Casio also has a host of other sounds like the Harpsichord, Strings, Vibraphone, etc. which weren't covered in the video.
In conclusion, if you care about the action, go for the Casio. Definitely don't go for the Yamaha, and you'll probably be fine most of the time with the Kawai, but the Casio is still better. If speaker sounds are your highest priority, probably don't go for the Casio, but if you're going to be recording, the Casio has the Bechstein, Steinway and Bösendorfer so it may be the best.

Hi! I'm facing the same dilemma you faced. Would you prefer the casio or a vertical piano of the same price range? I'm looking into buying one of the two alternatives but I live with other people, so the casio would give me the advantage to play with headphones at night (a vertical piano with a silent system is out of my price range), and also it's very light in comparison with a real piano. On the other hand, the vertical piano is, well, a real piano. Hope you can reply! I'm not as advanced as you (I think I'm abrsm 6-7ish), but your feedback would be very useful. Thanks in advance.

Casio needs to make a handwritten more classic logo, perhaps people are offput by the low end calculator it gives as a brand, but remember: Yamaha also has cheap gear. Kawai might have the best brand image but it's good pianos are 5k and above, GP310 will likely be my buy.

Yes agree can't hear the casio it's not loud enough. The other two blow it away.
I think the Kawai is the best all rounder has a lot better speakers and the action has excellent expression control.

@@pymebones hey, super sorry for the last response, I didn't get the notification for your reply unfortunately.
For me one of the major restrictions was space, and an upright piano was simply too big for me.
Another thing to consider, is that the Casio and these hybrid pianos are trying to emulate a grand piano, not an upright. I recently found out I play better on a grand piano than an upright. Up to you to decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Last thing I would say from personal experience (of around 10 old uprights I've come across), is that cheap uprights are not that great to play on, especially after a few years. The keys are worn, the wear to the keybed means they're all at different heights, the action is uneven, keys can stick, overall not a nice experience. This has just been my experience though, it could be different for you.
Overall I would suggest a hybrid, it's closer to a grand piano action than uprights, it's smaller, requires much less maintenance, there's volume control, headphones, etc.
Once again sorry for missing your comment. You've probably bought a piano by now, so let me know what you chose!

Pricewise, they're not in the same category even if they have similar places in their own brand line-up. Here in Turkey, the Yamaha CLP745 is TRY 43K, CLP735 is TRY 33K, Kawai CA59 is 26K, CA79 is 31K, the flagship CA99 being 37K. Roland LX706 is also TRY 37K. So, it's a no-brainer here, only the idiots go for the Yamaha as it's the only musical instrument brand they've ever heard of.

I'm actually very happy the pricing is this way and not the other way around as I like the sound and action of Kawai a lot more. Considering the average income is only about TRY 60K in Turkey, it's a very very big investment unfortunately.
