Excellent video and great explanation of how to thue the engine and not have to worry about weather conditions to much. Seen foljs adjust each day the come to the field.
Great video I just got my first gas engine after years of glow. Dle20 . It cam with an NGK plug. Ran for about five minutes then started to misfire and die. I installed a new NGK plug. Looking at the original plug I think it was a fake NGK plug. Has all the markings but the insulator and center electrode I such different. As for the idle up switch. A guy at the field suggested it. I do if al the time . With a glow engine it is even better. Position 1 is idle up. Position 2 is normal and the engine speed is controlled by the trim . Position 3 is engine kill. Works fantastic
The most meaningful video seen on engine tuning . Kindly mention the link of the document so further reference. Keep posting more . Just tuned my engine , works like a clock. Keep it up . Love from 🇮🇳 india
Thanks for the info! Forgive me if this has already been said. But the float needle/pump needle arm bend is really important. It determines how much fuel is given to the carb. Just has this issue on a ngh 9cc finally after a ton cursing finally got it set with the right bend on the pump arm
Might be good to add that you recheck the tuning after the engine is broken in as it should be running cooler then. Great video, Terry. You sort of alluded to the fact that as weather conditions change the need for retuning may come up but it is always good to run rich enough to accommodate them.
Weather does not effect tuning unless you've done a bad job of tuning. Extremely minor tuning can be done between winter and summer if you fly all year round.
Great vid.. 4th flight with my 93" laser...pop top to dead stick.....to a month of repairs... researching how to set an idle up on my taranis x9d radio.
I Don't use a high idle switch, i just click the gas trim 3 click up after takeoff and back just before landing;) Had my Dle 111 for 8 years and never a motor stop. Awesome engines.
I, and as tradition has it, always adjust the high speed needle first go max revs back off 1/8 turn or less, then go adjust the low speed needle for good transition, not saying your idea won't work it is just more complicated with too many variables, your checks are valid but it is always advisable to get your high needle set first.
Thanks for this tip...I have a DA120 that will idle low...950 but I would never fly with that low and I don't want to change my trim every flight...this low idle Mix...is fantastic thanks..
I know this vid is from 2018 and its now 2021 and hopefully you still check messages and comments on here BUT my question is... Can I use this method of tuning to ANY 2 stroke engine?? I ask bc I recently bought a RC BOAT that has a 2 stroke 30cc Zenoah G300PUM which has the WT-1048 carb on it and I was wondering if I can extrapolate the information on here and adapt it to a marine engine. Im actually going to the lake tomorrow for tuning so hopefully i get a reply by then.. But if not no worries im just going to try it anyway. I honestly think that it should work but im not sure so I wanted to ask. Im NEW to GAS RC anything. I've had glow plugs and nitro RC truck before but i dont know if its the same tuning for GAS engines.
Tuning between nitro and gas engines is very similar. Only difference is the carb, how many needles (1, 2 or 3), and what throttle range each needle comes in. Some use the high to control the majority of the mixture and some use the low, where the high only comes in in after 3/4 throttle or more.
17:00 I have called it "Ground Idle" and "Flight Idle"... the flight idle is enough extra rpm above ground idle that the motor doesn't die in a tail slide... and also the flight idle switch triggers my flight timer.... IMHO
I am just getting back into the hobby and have a older dle 30. I can not get it to stay running and it sounds rich but the low end stalls out. Also the has a NGK cm-6 plug but seems to be fouling out. I can not find your engine tuning guide. Help!
Having trouble locating the engine tuning PDF referred to in the video. Not finding it on the website. Is it still available? EDIT: (Nevermind the request, I dug a little deeper in the comments and found it.)
Anyone have any insight on an DLE30 that dies around 45%? It pretty hot where I live and after warming the engine up for about 5 minutes when I throttle up it just dies. It’s very abrupt and I’m not noticing any coughing or sputtering.
So how do you tune a Dual carb Engine I have a DA-200 and cannot make it run properly , I don't know how to tell.if it's the front or rear carb thay needs adjustment
If your engine is dying going from full throttle to idle, you're probably too rich on the high. If the opposite happens and it takes a while for the idle to settle down after full throttle, you're probably too lean on the high. If you can't get a low idle without stalling you're probably too lean on the low, it'll also die or hesitate when going to full throttle quickly. If the idle slowly gets lower, engine remains cool and sounds rough, inconsistent and 'four strokey' at low throttle just off idle, you're probably too rich on the low. Don't be afraid to move the needles in 1/4 - 1/2 turns for a better contrast of what each needle does to the tune, just don't run it for long with needles drastically out of range. Sometimes you need to find where lean and rich are so you can narrow down the sweet spot for the needle settings.
Say any idea how hot the DA 70 suppose to reach? I tend to fly 4-5 minutes with 24x9 and redline 40:1. The hottest temperature is 159 degree and no deadstick so far.
Good intro but like everyone else I can't find your PDF instructions anywhere! Please provide a link that works...a video that refers to a document that doesn't exist is pretty useless sadly.
Like video. My fellow giant scale flyers and I like to set our low end on gasses with the pinch test, just like nitro. Low idle, pinch feed and look for a 100-150rpm rise then fall to die. If no rise in rpm at all, your lean.
I got an engine that I bet you would definitely struggle with… I have tried your method,, I’ve tried my method,, I’ve tried Gods method,, and it’s just not working… DLE222 The best I ever got to run, both needles out about 5 1/2 turns!!! And that was questionable… Even tore down the engine put brand new or MJ machine works rings in it and rebuilt the carburetors thinking that was the problem, to no avail still doing the same thing… At one and a half and two on both needles, it won’t even start… Brand new fuel lines clean tank installation… Just not working don’t get it… ever heard of that problem?

Should be exactly the same. Start a mix THR to THR at about 7-8% and assign it to a switch. Glad it could help, seen it all to many times
Like the video i'm going to do that set up

Scott, great video, would like a copy of your tuning setup but can't find a down load on AJ'S web site or on Google. Can you help me out?
Thanks Rick
Nor me.
Me either, can’t find it!
Cant find the pdf either…
Can’t find your PDF at your website
Excellent video! I have learnt a lot! I was wondering, did you do the IDLE up & down video? I was looking for it but did not find it!
I can't find the PDF! Thank you!
Hi Scott. Thanks for the information. Can’t see where to download a copy of your tuning instructions. Cheers
looks like scott doest care :P
Great video i looked on the aj aircraft and facebook site i didnt see the PDF for engine tuning.

Yes look on RCTEK on Facebook under files as mentioned in the video. You have to join the page to get the files.

Pinch test is not acceptable for gas engines in any way what so ever.
@Terryscustom why not? The mixture will slowly go lean causing a rise in idle speed just before it dies.
