  • Happy New Year! This video is just a little quick bit of throwing, using a clay new to me- Standard 365 English Porcelain. I normally use a cone 6 Laguna B-mix, but have been thinking about making a switch, and this is a test!

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 30 years, the past 20+ have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RUclips channel several years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

I work with a wide range of clay from very iron rich reds to lovely white porcelain and found having a dedicated set of sponges, tools, towels, bucket -- etc really helps keep the contamination down and is much easier in the long run for cleaning. I also throw from the darkest clay to the lightest cleaning in between so by the time I get to porcelain - the wheel - bats - shelves are free of red clay in places you don't know is hiding it 😜 or missed when cleaning. Porcelain is wonderful - have a ton of fun exploring - water etching is particularly beautiful with the translucent qualities and adds a visual depth you just can't get with anything else. Happy New Year ❤️

Yes to all this!!! And I LOVE water etching on porcelain!!! That’s one of the big reasons I wanted to do a little switcheroo!

Happy New Year! I have been thinking of trying porcelain for a while and now I’m really inspired. I recently purchased some Laguna 1/2 & 1/2 to see how it compares to B mix. Then I will try the porcelain! I love that you were watching your football team play while creating a beautiful mug! Thank you for all your fabulous videos!!!

How clean do your surfaces need to be when you transition from B-mix to porcelain?

I keep everything pretty clean at the end of every working session, so the transition won’t be difficult!! Mixing porcelain into BMix isn’t problematic- the reverse could inhibit some of the delicious properties of porcelain however- but probably not a huge deal since BMix is porcelaneous stoneware. :)
