I moved to Seattle during the beginning of the Covid pandemic and I’d never been here before, but I expected a very cool bustling city. But for 2 years, of course everything was shut down due to Covid. That included concerts and firework displays. A couple years later, everything was open and Seattle was alive and hopping. The Space Needle has always been the place to be for the fireworks on the 4th of July, and I just happen to live a couple blocks from there. I looked up if there was a fireworks display there for Independence Day, but all it said was something about a drone show. I couldn’t imagine anything more boring than watching drones flying around but I went anyway, since it was a short walk from home and a huge party. I talked to a few people and asked about this drone show thing, I didn’t see any drones here. They laughed and said, “Wait til it’s dark. It’s incredible!” There were a few small fireworks and lasers shooting out of the Space Needle but then it sounded like a huge swarm of bees in the sky above us. Then Bam! The drones all lit up and started making pictures in the sky! Hundreds of them! They even simulated fireworks going off and explosion noises came through the loud speakers, perfectly timed with what the drones were doing. Very realistic and really amazing! They did all sorts of animations and I could hardly believe what I was seeing! I realized these were all computer controlled and programmed but didn’t know that technology existed yet. But this is Seattle, home to Microsoft, so this place is super high-tech. The Seattle drone show was similar to a lot of the shows in your video here. Amazing! I’m 60 years old and I do miss a good old fashioned fireworks display, and we still do that, but man, I’m really looking forward to next year’s drone show here. The technology involved in this kind of show looks like something we shouldn’t be able to do yet. It’s wild man! Thanks for the video. Great job! Edit: Just subscribed.
Hey sean, really appreciate your comment and thanks for sharing your first time experiencing this technology - I myself have yet to see a drone show in person but I do think it would be really cool to see a hybrid show combining fireworks and drones. It definitely does seem to add something new to the world of live entertainment. Also, thanks for your sub I greatly appreciate the support! All the best to you.
@@engineering_evolved , Man, you really have to see a drone show in person. I’m kinda glad I never even heard of a “drone show” before I saw my first one. I didn’t know what to expect? So that was the coolest part of the experience for me. Complete surprise. You know what to expect but still, there’s a hugely more intense experience going on live, than watching a video of it. So you’re in for a treat my friend! Go see your first live show. It’s wild. I agree that a hybrid show combining fireworks and drones is probably the ultimate experience. Seattle did a few fireworks at the Space Needle but it’s right at the city center and by July, lots of wildfires in the Pacific Northwest and fire-bans are instituted, so fireworks are frowned upon. So they went full-on into the drone show and honestly, I think it’s better than fireworks. It’s just so mesmerizing! And next 4th of July, I’m positive it’ll be way better! Thanks for watching Chet! It was cool to learn more about the teams and the different stages of production behind these shows during my research - I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I haven't seen a drone light show in person yet but would love to see a hybrid show combining fireworks and drones one day.
Fantastic entertainment, it's exciting to fathom how this innovative art form will surely evolve with the jaw dropping technology. I'm 71, and I've been a big fan of fireworks all my life, but all the reasons you provided why traditional fireworks can be dangerous, and highly polluting are certainly valid. Hopefully the two art forms will continue to expand with concerns for safety and the environment.
There is a deeply rooted American tradition combining explosives and the consumption of alcohol for our holidays, but I'm loving the drone shows I've been seeing on RUclips. I hope it catches on for the community celebrations.
Absolutely, I think it's cool the live entertainment space is incorporating the technology - but of course fireworks will always be a timeless classic. Thanks for watching!
I was in Singapore for New Years 2007 and saw a light show with small light weight RC planes with lights. Each RC plane was controlled by a person and there were about 30 of them. Somehow they were able to fly in formations and patterns that looked interesting. They could also change the colors on the plane from their remote controls or turn the lights off and on. I wondered how each pilot kept track of which RC plane was theirs. These RC planes were extremely light weight and slow moving so if you were struck by one, it wouldn't injure you unless the propeller hit your directly on your eye ball. Being so light weight meant that the wind currents had to be very low. You needed calm air to fly these. They had tiny batteries so the plane could only fly for about 5 minutes. They were shaped like bumblebees and everything on them was tiny including the propeller.
I worked for a small robotics company in 2011 that presented autonymous robots to the DOD that could literally get through a 1 foot wide by 6 inch tall hole (spec) and drive around sending a live camera feed back to the operator... those things were rugged, agile, and damn near silent and could be launched through a window using a shotgun and a proprietary hopper device (like THROUGH the glass) or introduced silently by a human operator by hand... that was in *_2011!!_* I don't even want to think about what they are developing now. The idea of a "drone insect" for spying is not science fiction, its very much a potential reality even in the current and very near future.
Wow that's incredible, albeit a bit scary - thanks for sharing this story! I'm certain that there are technologies that exist which far exceed anything the general public has ever experienced. Who knows what the world will look like just a few years from now.

Drones will never replace the spectacle in sight and sounds of fireworks, but they will prove essential in surveillance, warfare, aerial reconnaissance, delivery, transportation, communications, assassinations, etc. Tyrants will love them.
I feel there will be a place for both for years to come. Just like drones, fireworks have advanced dramatically over the years. Many performing pyro musicals which the timing of the music and exploding displays match perfectly with the use of Cobra electronic firing systems. I myself am moving into that advanced pyro show. The response we had from this years 4th celebration was overwhelming. Makes all the time and hard work put in to a show so satisfying.
Absolutely, they both compliment each other I think. Doing hybrid shows seems like a good combo! That's awesome, best of luck to you in your future pyrotechnic endeavors 👍
Thank you. I have yet to see a drone display in person but they look amazing on the videos and Olympics I've watched. Good luck and all the best on your ventures.
This past 4th we had a fountain EXPLODE! It was like a bomb went off, shook windows and burned my cousin, and hit him with debris. Also embers landed on my girls hoodie and I put it out. It was SO LOUD.
I don’t think anything can take the place of fireworks, with all the random unknowns that can happen when a firework show is set off. Some may explode louder, or not at all, the colors are always unexpected to the audience, and as was stated in the video, the smells and sounds are so familiar. That being said, the drone shows are literally the next step in doing a sky show, without the smoke and noise, therefore creating a whole new experience for the audience. I’m sure the drone companies will try to stretch the boundaries of what drones can do, and the shows will be like watching tv in the sky.
Ya I agree, fireworks should remain a staple and will likely continue to be entertaining for their own unique characteristics like you've described. It's natural for humans to want to continually innovate and push the boundaries of what can be achieved when you combine tech with live entertainment. Thanks for your comment I appreciate it.
@@engineering_evolvedI think that for safety reasons and the awesome show that is improving exponentially. I get that you're nostalgic, but fireworks will take a backseat, though they have been around too long to just go away instantly. Secondly and very important to most, especially those in attendance with children how many light-years ahead they are in safety. I
Visually interesting, but drone displays will never take the place of traditional fireworks... not when it is not just the display that is visually pleasing, but the sounds fireworks make; it is this alone that makes fireworks far more enjoyable to watch and listen too -- something that can't be replicated by drones. And honestly, listening to the buzzing sound of drones is not pleasing to the ear.
Agreed, fireworks are tangible in a way that drones aren't, but visually interesting for sure. There's something about the explosive energy of fireworks that can never be replaced. Thanks for watching!
I'll say this. One thing a drone show doesn't do is upset the family pets. Dogs and cats are terrified of the explosion sounds that result from fireworks. The same noise can cause relapses in PTSD for veterans. There's also less waste material with drones.
As a lightning photographer and light painter in general I am all for more things lighting up in the night sky. It's a nice break from the comedy of being both the camera and the brush at the same time.
I have seen 3 different drone shows and myself and have always loved fireworks, but I honestly feel that the drone shows are way better, and it is just the begging of what they will be able to do with these shows!!
Nice! I have yet to see a drone show in real life but would love to see one in person some day. Seems like the sky is the limit with this technology, can't wait to see how this space develops in the future :)
Oh I know, it does look like quite a complex set of moving parts. Some of these shows have giant teams making sure they run smoothly, kudos to them for pulling such spectacles off!
Yeah doing hybrid shows with drones and fireworks seems to be pretty cutting edge at the moment - it'll be interesting to see how this space develops in the coming years.
It's hard to imaging what the state of the art in drone shows will be just a few years from now but I predict that high end drone shows will use smaller drones with enhanced situational awareness, allowing them to fly in tighter formations for higher pixel density, creating denser, more realistic imagery. Control systems will routinely use encryption and jam-resistance will be incorporated into the RF systems of the drones as well. They will have enhanced hack resistance and be more fault tolerant.
Definitely, tighter formations + added capabilities = even more opportunities for planning out increasingly intricate designs/awe-inspiring shows. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
A drone show can not give you the same visceral effect that a traditional firework show will, it will provide a new emotional feeling. Life changes, technology changes, and as a bonus people on the West Coast could have a 4th of July light show again. Fireworks are a huge fire risk and that's not a risk that anyone should take
living life is a huge risk, is that not a risk anyone should take? You and your cocoon of safety,... there's nothing like fireworks, loud, unpredictable chaos that lights up the sky... all these drone shows are alright but by their orderly nature also quite unsurprising, uninspiring and after some time boring.
Firework and drone shows are completely different. It is the same situation if you compare are candle light with a led light. I think both a great and important but create complete different feelings. None of the will replace the other.
Agreed, I think they both have there own place in live entertainment now. Hybrid shows that combine the two are also cool. I don't imagine it'll ever be one or the other, fireworks are a classic and will probably remain that way - thanks for watching and for your comment!
I LOVE DRONES, BUT, MY FAMILY SAYS I CAN'T USE VR DUE TO A DISABILITY I'VE HAD SINCE I WAS 4 YRS OLD, BUT, I LOVE WHAT THEY CAN DO IN TERMS OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOGRAPHY SO YOU CAN SEE THINGS THAT YOU WANT IF THEY'RE NOT SAFE, WHILE STAYING AT A SAFE DISTANCE.
Absolutely a wonderful sight to see online and in person! I like BOTH experiences; fireworks and the drone shows the drones take sky shows to another level of fireworks shows! I love both very much!
In the video it was mentioned that these shows are expensive. How much does one of such drones cost? How much is an entire setup? Even it were 1000$ per drone it would be relatively cheap in comparison to normal fireworks that often cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and can not be reused
Thanks for watching and for your comment! The cost will of course depend on the size of the show, so anywhere from $10000 for very small shows to $500000 for very large shows. You're right, the fact that you can reuse the drones is also a huge plus!
One big draw back I see, is that current drones are not fast enough to display large scale motion. Most videos of drones are speed up to create dramatic motion (ex. the drone dragon show). Either drones need to get faster or have more in the air spread out that come on & off to appear the display is moving. Kinda like pixels on a 3d screen. For now, I saw pair them with laser & fireworks.
I guess before long, my neighbors are going to be spending $1000's on drones, and rather than comforting my terrified dog, I'll be ducking swarms of buzzing drones. At least they won't start tons of fires every year! This is WAY more awesome anyhow!
I believe the transition has already started. The technology is here. This video make it clear. However, fireworks will be around until something like "forever" until drone shows are price competitive or fireworks are forbidden.
Right, I doubt the public would ever get on board with a complete ban on fireworks, having only drones as live entertainment seems a little dystopian. Either way it's cool to see the space developing in new ways! Thanks for watching and for your comment.
You guys need to use MINI DRONES. About a million of them. 2 inch wide drones with 3 LEDs - green blue and red. With the option of lighting all three LEDs as a single color.
At this point the cost is prohibitive for anyone, but those with deep pockets. I've been amazed at some of the shows I've seen, and they will continue to evolve until we have almost 100% photographic replicas in the sky. Now, and in the future, I like the shows that include minimal standard fireworks, but they are not essential. I love both, and whatever the shows of the future will be, I'm here for it! 👍✌🗽
As long as they are used safely and for the right purpose its OK some people miss use them for the wrong reasons and in some country's drones are not legal to own .
Although technically impressive and have their place I prefer fireworks, the sound the randomness, the smell. All the governments of the West would rather us have no fireworks hmmm
Agreed, it wouldn't be the same without fireworks! I hope fireworks never get replaced, but it's cool to see people developing new forms of live entertainment. Thanks for watching!
Fireworks should be done at public shows .. There are too many pyromaniacs who illegally set off the sonic boom ones. THIS is the problem with fireworks. I guees you don't have pets? or a parent/grandparent with heart conditions??
That was a good, informative video. To answer the last question, no, I do t think fireworks are threatened. I think the drones simply (not downplaying their complexity) add to the show. The fireworks will always be around, drones add another layer to the show, just like lights did as they started to advance.
I think there is more than enough space in the public events market for both to co-exist. I went and saw one over the summer. It was great! I took my dog! Even he loved it! Possibly more than I did. He started whining when it was over.
These software development projects are research and testing for a time when the skies are filled with Jetson style traffic. You tell your car where you want to go and it communicates with the main terminal network to map out the trip. Dubai has had working hoverbikes like used in the Star Wars Ewoks movie for its police force for years now. We are so close.
AI will definitely have a transformative impact on plenty of existing hardware, drone tech included! I'll be watching this space closely over the coming years!
I fully embrace this new technology and hope it eventually greatly reduces fireworks and it's downsides. Fire hazards, noise annoyance to wildlife, pets and humans and injuries to amateur shooters. I dread listening to dis-respectful neighbors for weeks in July. There is no escaping it.
soon, drones will be like sky pixels. Each drone a speck on the sky screen. Can't wait! Edit: I wrote that before watching this. The irony, ey? Can't wait for sky TV shows.
Ya it seems like that's where things are headed, it'll be interesting to see how this form of entertainment develops in the future! Thanks for watching.
Wow, the drone show is just incredible. The drone age has begun earnestly in China just as the fire work was invented in ancient China. Great China. 👍👍👍
I first heard about these drone displays a few days ago in a RUclips video concerning a drone show in China using 10197 drones. As in this video the drones created amazing displays. It is a great alternative to fireworks, the latter of which produce noise, pollution, and sometimes injuries. This was an informative video but I noticed one minor error in English usage. At 2:53 you misused the phrase "begs the question". What that phrase means is to use an argument that assumes the truth of the very thing you are trying to prove. That is clearly not what you meant; you were not trying to prove anything. You should have said "raises the question". If I had a dollar every time I saw someone misuse the phrase "begs the question" in this way I could retire.
No, I don't suspect they will ever fully replace fireworks. They have irreplaceable tangibility and offer a more sensorial experience compared to drones. Both are cool though, and when combined together have the potential to compliment each other in new and exciting ways. Thanks for watching!
@OurBlindSpot agreed. It's getting more fascinating with time. Imagine in 20 years what that would look like? I think drones can definitely replace fireworks one day. Also, light is faster that any fireworks, so I believe in what u said. They don't have to move, just turn on and off, and done fast enough, can give the illusion of movement and speed. Never say never
Thanks for watching this video about drone light shows and the future of fireworks!

Fireworks are a huge fire risk and that's not a risk that anyone should take
Thanks for watching Tony, appreciate the comment.
living life is a huge risk, is that not a risk anyone should take?
Absolutely incredible. Thanks for sharing.
Ya absolutely, you can still enjoy these shows in whatever way works for you. Appreciate the comment and hope you enjoyed the video!
Absolutely a wonderful sight to see online and in person! I like BOTH experiences; fireworks and the drone shows the drones take sky shows to another level of fireworks shows! I love both very much!
I love both too! Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching
Every drone video I've seen says it's a world record breaker.
I just saw a show with 400 drones and I have to say, it was super impressive...
Cool! I have yet to see one irl but I imagine a show with thousands would be even more spectacular. Thanks for watching!
You clearly don’t know shit about fireworks lol
One big draw back I see, is that current drones are not fast enough to display large scale motion. Most videos of drones are speed up to create dramatic motion (ex. the drone dragon show). Either drones need to get faster or have more in the air spread out that come on & off to appear the display is moving. Kinda like pixels on a 3d screen. For now, I saw pair them with laser & fireworks.
I guess before long, my neighbors are going to be spending $1000's on drones, and rather than comforting my terrified dog, I'll be ducking swarms of buzzing drones. At least they won't start tons of fires every year! This is WAY more awesome anyhow!
wow im blown away, i stand behind it 1000% !!!
Pretty cool stuff right? Thanks for watching! 🙏
Sorry guys. Give me the fireworks over a light show any day.
That's fair! Thanks for watching
That is a good point indeed @@engineering_evolved
Saw a video of a drone show with fireworks...they had like a ultron head shooting lazer out its eyes and the fireworks would explode...it was amazing
Whoa that sounds cool!
It's all ooh's, ah's, and wow's until the SWARM ATTACKS, then it's all aahs!, eeks!, and ow's!
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
I rather pay twice the amount to see a fireworks show than pay for a drone one
You ain't see the good ones yet..that's why😅
Although technically impressive and have their place I prefer fireworks, the sound the randomness, the smell. All the governments of the West would rather us have no fireworks hmmm
SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE SHOW DO NOT OVER THINK IT KK
Agreed Bobby! Thanks for watching
While cool, hate hate HATE the idea of these replacing fireworks. Especially for 4th of July.
Thanks for your comment and happy to hear you enjoyed the video! Cheers
Hello there, cheers to drone light
shows.
Hello! Thanks for watching and cheers to drone light shows
Drones and fireworks, together, would be a good show to experience (both now and in the future) - bridging both traditional and newage.
I completely agree, I would love to see a show like that in the future! Thanks for your comment!
I remember this. It was in London. Spider-Man showed up to stop him.
I think there is more than enough space in the public events market for both to co-exist.
I went and saw one over the summer. It was great! I took my dog! Even he loved it! Possibly more than I did. He started whining when it was over.
truely amazing what this world has become
Agreed! It's amazing how fast the tech space is developing. Thanks for your comment!
cool stuff. really amazing what they can do.
Ya they're pretty versatile! Lots of future possibilities for different types of shows. Thanks for watching!
the drones remind me of the graphics in DOS 3.0
Lol I see what you mean
Finally, an apolitical tech video by an American(?).
hey~Omg,breathtaking done-Engineering-😲
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!
Cheers to the future! One thing that would be like a 'jetsons' moment for me would be if formula one transformed into pod racing in the future.
@@engineering_evolved That would be VERY cool. I might actually want to watch that race. ;)
Nobody Smalls that, a Fire Fly.
This is only the beginning drone tech will get so good with AI and then just dance this is the new fireworks display BANGS not so much but Music
AI will definitely have a transformative impact on plenty of existing hardware, drone tech included! I'll be watching this space closely over the coming years!
That QR Code actually worked on my iPhone.
Cool! I'll have to try that out myself haha
Thanks for watching!
Drones vs Fireworks
The Battle
me watching the video thinking this person must have millions of subscribers * me realizing they only have 1k WHAT?
Seriously thank you for this, it made my day!
@@engineering_evolved Your welcome I am going to be watching this channel for years to come great vid! :)
Amazing video keep it up
@@PuggerzArt Thank you so much! More to come :)
But... where's the gunpowder smell?!?!?
Yeah, yeah... they're nice, the drones, but we still need the real McCoy! 😁
Agreed! Nothing can replace the classic
soon, drones will be like sky pixels.
Sit back and enjoy the show.
Agreed 👍
Wow, the drone show is just incredible. The drone age has begun earnestly in China just as the fire work was invented in ancient China. Great China. 👍👍👍
The Chinese definitely seem to be putting on many incredible drone shows! Appreciate your comment.
I will always go for fireworks .
Light Bright evolved!
Thanks for your comment hope you enjoyed the video!
Sit back and watch the show!!!!
Totally! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.
I think we should replace fireworks with drone shows..
Next Gen Firework
Crazy times! Appreciate the comment
It would be great if not for advertising, Advertising ruins everything;
3 min in and haven't seen the record breaking drone show yet - wtf!? I'm out...
"Fireworks injuries skyrocketed this year..." Really? Who writes that crap and thinks it's clever?
Nice! But it never hits real fireworks!
Incredibile! Cool !!!👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Nick appreciate the support! 👍
im in awe
I like drone shows, BUT it can never replace the BOOM in fireworks. It's like going to drag races for electric cars. You have to FEEL the power.
True! I don't think they can truly be replaced, fireworks are a classic that should stick around as long as possible imo!
I can’t get my simple DJI Spark and Mavic to fly properly and they out there doing this.
Pretty incredible right? Lots of coordination involved in each show. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
If I had a dollar every time I saw someone misuse the phrase "begs the question" in this way I could retire.
true fireworks wont fully be replaced by drones. most drones just dont move as fast as real fireworks nor have the "boom" of a firework.
No, I don't suspect they will ever fully replace fireworks. They have irreplaceable tangibility and offer a more sensorial experience compared to drones. Both are cool though, and when combined together have the potential to compliment each other in new and exciting ways. Thanks for watching!
With enough drones, they don't need to move.. just turn the lights on and off.. never say never.
Never say never
Cool AF until you think about the weaponization going on as well
Drones are nifty... and can't hold a candle to a good fireworks show. They're good for augmentation though!
Fireworks and drone light shows are 2 different things.
Can't we have both?
Absolutely!
This is going to make safely and cheaply clearing mine fields and trenches child’s play.
The future is the holografic image! No risk
Large scale holograms are definitely in the cards, that'll be epic to see irl
