I never felt unsafe or like I couldn't make it to something I wanted to see. Its all pretty accessible you just have to start driving!
I bought a 1999 WJ laredo with selectrac tc, 4.0 six as I tow behind my motorhome. ( i like the 2 wheel drive option) Just put a 2 1/2 lft on it with some taller tires. Next possibly will be a lokka on the front and I have a winch that I want to be able to switch from front to back via hitch recievers. We explore with it as we wander the western US in the winter. 70 years old but not ready for the couch yet....lol.

I got a 99 WJ. 4.7 Quadra Trac 2. 4’ lift 32’’x16’’ milestar Patagonia tires. Roof rack. 8, 6” round 130 watt lights. 4 cube LED rock lights. 2 LED cube back up lights. Plus a bunch more stuff to do. I love driving it. Love working on it. I retired out of the FL National Guard 6 years ago. This is my poor man’s HUMMV, with leather seats A/C ect. Outstanding WJ you got there. Great video. Looking forward to seeing more.
We are loving ours. Taken us from Florida to Canada and back and a few other interstate trips so far. And best of all we own it and no payments on some $60k Wrangler.
Cheap and abundant is the reason I love my WJ too! Best selling SUV in South Africa during its lifetime (1999 -2004), and we even got the excellent 2.7 litre Mercedes turbodiesel. My 4.7 has done almost 400 000 km (250 000 miles) trouble-free. When parts are needed, new is cheaper than what you'd pay for similar Toyota parts, but I also found a few junk yards specialising in Jeeps, where I go first.
@@Whiteandsonsgarage My experience is more with the 4.0, of which I've owned a good few, and which is widely regarded as indestructible. It performs well in the XJ and TJ, but unfortunately paired in the WJ, with Quadradrive and the horrible gearbox it comes with, it is an utter dog and must be avoided. By comparison and in my experience with the 2000 model I've owned for almost 20 years, the 4.7 gives one everything you could wish for; awesome power, better fuel economy and a much better (actually very good) transmission. I believe the 4.7 does have some issues (check out the forums) but with proper care will do the miles and will serve you well. You could probably pick one up for next to nothing in Aussieland, so I'd say go for it - the performance off-road, with even just a mild lift, is mind-blowingly good!
@@Whiteandsonsgarage NOOOOO!! As much as I love the 4.0, it is a terrible option in the WJ (actually WG, since it was assembled in Graz, Austria for RHD markets). No question about it, go for the V8 4.7 and if you can find a 2004 model, look for an Overland Edition at a good price.
Excited to see the bumper build. I’m tucking my tank now and have decided to not put the factory bumper back on. Most of the current bumpers are way to bulky
WJ goals. I have a EAG bumper and 12k winch I was going to install and I took the old bumper off and found the cross member damaged so now I have to get that fixed befor I can install it. One step back, but I'll get it done. Once that's done Ill be doing my suspencion. I am very interested in your molle system. I will definitely be purchasing the rear tailgate and rear side window molle webs from you. Those seem seriously useful.
I just got a 2002 wj with a bad motor tick for 1500 bucks it is in literally mint condition it's insane I'm gonna put a new inline six in it and build the hell out of it all leather interior 4x4 there is not a spec of rot rust or any dings on this thing it is insanely nice I couldn't believe when I found at a dealership
I just did a RC 4 inch and I'm happy with it for the most part. it doesn't track as well as stock, but not bad. Aside from the lift I went from the 225 65 16 to a 265 65 18 tire on a 8.5x18 wheel with a +25 offset. The only issue at the moment is the front bumper need trimming, or a custom winch bumper. I can pull the front tires back a bit with the lift kit, but not sure enough to clear the bumper. Aside from real alignment angles I have not noticed a difference driving from the furthest adjustment to the least adjustment., and right now the axle is as far forward as possible. The kit I used has the lower drop bracket with a cam bolt to adjust length. That is not a good system, but once sorted out I will make inserts that can't turn and have also have a full bolt diameter.
@@halfheartclutch9365 So I said 4 inch years ago. it might be 3 inch. The front drive shaft failed, and that hurt the transfercase. The steering box is going. I have an odd noise , but it might be the front differential. The spring perches were rusted away and I repaired them. My jeep has just about 190,000 miles on it and in the rust belt, so anything could go wrong at anytime either way.

Even XJ's in good condition are going for more than WJ's. I paid 5k for my 2001 Michigan XJ, a decent example, some rust, but nothing like others in the area. There were tons of people who wanted to buy it. By comparison you can still buy really clean WJ's for like 1.5k that are from the south. They do go really quick up here though. They are usually only around for a few days at most. I actually wish I would have bought a WJ instead of another XJ, but I have more knowledge on the XJ's and I had so many parts. You are right though, prices will be going up. Just like what happened to the XJ's. Get them while you can.
I love the work on your WJ; I have just started my own WJ overlander project and although I am familiar with jeeps and wheeling. overlanding is new territory for me. I am in the process of researching information on what kind of reinforcements i need to make to my roof rack in order to support a proper roof tent. I would love it if you made a video talking more about your set up and or any wj forum/information you found useful in your designs.
Good luck on your project. There are a lot of forums out there but I generally stay off of them. I made custom tent mounts. I removed the factory rails and bolted down mine. 16 bolts total.

I'm new to your channel your videos are awesome!! Definitely hope to buy some parts from ya. I love that front bumper and tire carrier. Do you have pics or video of how you mounted your hi lift jack?? Thank you
No I don't have one about the jack. It was just a quick install to get on the road for our big Florida to Canada trip we took. But I do like it there instead of up high due to the weight and I have not hit it yet on anything. Thank you for watching. Don't forget to subscribe at hit that notification bell for future video releases.
Unless you have the fab skills best to get a Clayton or Trailforged kit. Go long arm with good bushings or joints. Even if you are only going with 4 inch springs. Lots of trimming has to be done. Look back in my videos for my long arm build and fender trimming videos. Thanks for watching.
Working on it. Talking longer than I thought to find the extra time. But our new test dummy WJ is in the shop. I was working on the stock headlight bumper design this weekend. Check back in a couple weeks we will be taking preorders.
There are a few options that look good for stock headlights. Use the amazon link in my description then search from there. That helps out the channel a bit. Thanks for watching.
Couple of questions, how many miles did the engine have on it when you bought it? And second question is, what other drivetrain mods were needed to make that lift and tire combo work? Longer driveshafts?
The Jeep has the original 4.7 L V8 and she had about 145k miles on it. I did a slip yoke eliminator kit and custom rear driveshaft. The front is factory.
Spiral Design Works very cool thank you. I’m currently looking at a 2004 overland edition with 127k miles to tour the US mountain ranges and southern low country
This might be a dumb question but, I recently came across a guy talking about frame stiffeners for his XJ, during your overlanding trip and all the off-roading you’ve done have you ever thought that he WJ might need frame stiffeners as well?
Wj's have tens of millions of miles on them and I have never seen a cracked unibody. I have seen bend suspension mounts on the axles. If you were doing extreme rock crawling or high speed desert racing/jumping. Sure beef it up. But I don't see it being a problem. With the 6" lift I did it basically created a small frame between the front and rear lower suspension mounts.
mudhound0530 I’m looking into buying a wj soon and couldn’t decide between the I6 or the v8. I will do mild off reading but mostly cruising. Why do you say 4.7 is a shit motor
Love them. I bought them used as this was a very tight budget build. I Bought the Jeep for $500. So spending $2k + on wheels and tires seemed weird. SO used Wrangler wheels and tires. Anyway I love them, the are worn a bit uneven from the last application. I will probably buy them new in the future as the build progresses.
@@SpiralDesignWorks that is probably the most beautiful bumper I have ever seen for a wj. Will look at other videos, what did you use to paint the exterior of jeep and why? It looks great I am just curious as I noticed it is very textured almost like a undercoating
Have a 2000 wj with the quadra trac 2 transfer case. It only works in 2 wheel drive unless it's in low range, can anyone give an idea 4wheel low works but only have 2high any other time
There are two forks in the transfer case that slide "selector ring gears" if you will back and forth. The range selector does High, neutral and low range connecting the main shaft to the planetary gear set. The other fork selects 2wd (the drive chain being in a neutral position, or not moving. {techincally the chain is always rotating because it gets fed back from the front tires through the diff, the driveshaft back into the case} or 4wd. So seems strange that you have high and low range, and 2wd and 4wd. So you are missing 4wd high range. Doesn't that transfer case also have a differential that does an AWD function? I am guessing that is the issue. You have to have the proper fluid and friction modifier in the case oil. There are clutches and springs inside the diff housing. Good luck
@@SpiralDesignWorks thank u for ur help. I have the factory quadra 2 trans case. . Can I fix this issue in my drive? Had several wj jeeps an dont know slot about the wj full time case. 4 wheel low is good, but only 2 wheel in 4 time high. That's love your videos. An I'll keep watching
The Quadradrive 2 transfer case drives the rear wheels till slip is detected then it puts power to the front. Has a hydro type of coupling in the transfer case similar to the Variloc in the axles. if no front drive in high range then the hydro coupling in the t case is shot. Maybe from running tires that are worn in the rear at some point. Low range is locked front to back like a part time system.
Got a 2003 Overland, which I bought lifted 2.5 inches. Kind of defeats the purpose and looks stupid, as the Overland was meant to be lower and faster... I love it, but am shitting myself that the engine will do the valve seat thing. Still pulls 130 odd mph, but I now have a ZG Orvis 4.0, and its faster. 70,000 miles. So, yep, I think the WJ has to go, or I''m gonna lower it, and sell the ZG - only made 170 in right hand drive. Shit, I want another Navara.
umm if you take care of your WJ they are fine no play. I have 190k on mine it has 0 inches of play in the wheel and drives straight as long as the tires are properly inflated. I have had my 2004 9 years Holy crap is your website expensive
Funny you say that because we just picked up our latest batch of molle panels and new prototype bumper parts from our laser guy and steel has almost doubled in price and after powdercoating we are barely cover the cost and are going to have to raise our prices for the first time in 3 years August first. Sorry to say things are getting expensive. Dollar is losing value everyday. Yes we could get stuff made in China much cheaper but there is simply not enough demand for WJ parts to pre order hundreds of items at a time. I usually only get 12-20 molles done at a time and that takes months to sell. SO with such low demand prices will be higher. Believe me it is really hard. You can't look at a simple Wrangler part like a bumper made in china and compare it to a very low production complicated WJ bumper with 28 parts.
Where do I get that side window hatch setup from! I was checking that out in the beginning of the video. I about shit myself when you hit that button and that opened up that's bad ass!
@@SpiralDesignWorks I'll have to look through your videos and find it that's pretty cool I know there are a few companies that make these I never seen it with a popper on it though that's pretty slick
What is your gas mileage like, best I've got out of my 4.7 is 14 mpg on the highway and around 10 in town. Just curious since you said you made a 3k mile round trip.
The unibody argument is weird to me because the XJ is a unibody and you see those builds keep up with wranglers without any hesitation. I think wrangler fanboys don’t like that the wrangler is no longer the “true jeep, bruh”, so they just hate on whatever is getting people’s attention at the time
Yes my one WJ to 50 wranglers on the trail has gone anywhere they go with V8 power. Also my original buy of the WJ was $500 which is probably less that one of their payments that they have to make for the next 7 years.

On the transfer case is that a direct bolt on or do you have to change any of the driveshafts
I installed a slip yoke eliminator kit for rear and front was direct bolt on.
What are the best plug and play headlight upgrade?
Also taillights?
Spiral Design Works I really like your custom bumper with the WK2 headlight conversion. Are you still producing that?
This might be a dumb question but, I recently came across a guy talking about frame stiffeners for his XJ, during your overlanding trip and all the off-roading you’ve done have you ever thought that he WJ might need frame stiffeners as well?
It's my understanding that the WJ is way stiffer/stronger than the XJ. No need from frame stiffeners.
Whered you get the roll cage?
I made just about everything you see on the Jeep. Check our my WJ playlist. about 47 videos on the build.
Silver Lake... You're in Michigan?
My shop is in Deland Florida. We did a 3300 mile trip from Deland to Michigan to Canada and back.
The 4.7 is a shit motor. The seats in my 04 I didn't like. But I just got an 03 with a 4.0L and leather seats. It cruises!
mudhound0530 I’m looking into buying a wj soon and couldn’t decide between the I6 or the v8. I will do mild off reading but mostly cruising. Why do you say 4.7 is a shit motor
Where did you get your headlights??
ruclips.net/video/YE5AePf-Vh0/видео.html
What state do you live in? How the hell did you do that side window thing that opens
I made it out of 3/16" aluminum. here is the video. ruclips.net/video/6LzcufmsFEc/видео.htmlsi=wn8CMIkZKdV1SM5L
How do you like those tires on the road and off? Thanks in advance!
Spiral Design Works I gotcha well Jeep looks bad ass and keep up the great vids. I might have to get that tire carrier soon. Love the look
Where did you get that front bumper and headlights?
I made the bumper and fender mods. Check out some of my other videos. Thanks for watching.
Thanks ur input an all our advance.. means a alot..
Thanks for all of ur advice. Love. Ur videos .thanks for ur advice
Which one is best? 4.0 0r 4.7?
The 4.0 was a great motor but I think the V8 is better in a larger heavier SUV like the Grand. I loved my 4.0 in my light TJ.
What front bumper is that?
I made it. ruclips.net/video/YE5AePf-Vh0/видео.html
You must be in another country than me. I never hear of a Navara or ZG Orvis. Have fun with your projects.
What motor do you have
Stock 4.7 V8
Your paint job is sick
Thanks. I did a couple videos on the application of the Raptor Liner. Check them out!
Скваречьник 😁😁👍👍👍
umm if you take care of your WJ they are fine no play. I have 190k on mine it has 0 inches of play in the wheel and drives straight as long as the tires are properly inflated.
I have had my 2004 9 years
Holy crap is your website expensive
Listen the trans in the 4.0 models are absolute junk, I've went through 6 just highway driving!
probably because you have a bad chad led foot
Can't handle the audio.
I know. I need to invest in a wireless mic set up. Trying every day to step up my video production game.
Where do I get that side window hatch setup from! I was checking that out in the beginning of the video. I about shit myself when you hit that button and that opened up that's bad ass!
I made it. There is a 4 parts series here on my channel.
Just curious since you said you made a 3k mile round trip.
yeah probably around the same. the giant tent on top does not help.
Where do you get that side window hatch system?
I custom made it. There are a few episodes on my channel.
