I think it says a lot that Watterson turned down all the licensing and marketing opportunities and all that. It shows that he wanted to preserve the comic's purity and character, even at the cost of mass quantities of money. It's such a great comic and the baseboard of so many childhoods (Including mine). Watterson made such an impact on my life and I'll never be able to repay it.
On the behalf of every one of us, Mr. Watterson,
    Thank you.

Not to mention, Watterson had a ton of money offered if he's have continued it. But I think he was burned out, felt relentlessy under pressure to produce, was concerned that the quality was slipping (NO way!).

My uncle died young. One of the few things I've got left of him is his Calvin And Hobbes collection. I got old enough to read them and understand them, and Watterson became one of my most beloved cartoonists ever, along Garaycochea, Quino and David Low. Pure innocent humor at its best.
I will allways be able to know him by this comic.

Although I didn't grew up with the comic, I loved reading the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips through the books. I laughed my butt off when he pretends to be Stupendous Man, and when his dad tells him he's a baby from Sears. And I also cried when they found the sick raccoon, or the time when a bully pestered with Calvin and takes away his truck. It's a comic that I love to read, and will again and again. I'm a Boomer and 60. I grew up on Peanuts and Snoopy, etc. Always loved cartoons and cool animation. I read the newspaper cartoons daily. There were two of them that are about the only strips that could make me laugh out loud on a regular basis: Calvin and The Far Side. And when those two strips ended, they were the last of the great newspaper strips. And to think those same panels can still make me laugh so hard - well, it's really an amazing testimony to the quality, humor and wonderful imagination behind them. Strange, as now newspapers themselves are almost a relic from the 20th century.

Always interesting to me that people represent Hobbes as being in Calvin's imagination, whereas Watterson intentionally made it open to interpretation. There's always that famous panel where Calvin decides he wants to be an escape artist, so Hobbes ties him to a chair with his arms pinned tightly to his sides and the knot in the middle of Calvin's back, making it impossible for Calvin to have done it himself.
He even goes on to have Calvin's dad acting utterly baffled how Calvin did it to himself, and refuses, of course, to accept Calvin's explanation that Hobbes did it.

  • @Byrnzi360
    @Byrnzi360 9 лет назад +31

I always thought that the best part of Calvin & Hobbes was the character interactions between Calvin and the other human characters, specifically his parents and the girl in his class.
The interactions between Hobbes and Calvin stole the show, but the character relationships were really well crafted. Calvin's parents weren't the irritating Cailou-Parents archetypes we see in garbage these days. His parents loved him, but were often exhausted by his constant shenanigans. If u recall properly, there were even a few strips where the parents expressed a desire to turn back time and get a dog instead of having a kid. I remember thinking that it was unusual to see parents behave the way they did, at the time, in anything other than a live-action sitcom.

It was the winter of 2012 when I first discovered Calvin and Hobbes. I remember fishing through some books I found under my grandpa's table and finding a book titled "There's Treasure Everywhere!" Obviously this book was a collection of Calvin and Hobbes strips. I'll tell you I was quite intrigued and found all these comics to be hilarious.
2013 rolls along and my mom buys me my own Calvin and Hobbes book: "The Days Are Just Packed". I found that one so much funnier than the previous and I recall bringing the book to school every day. I mama fed to get my best friend into the series, and then many more around me.
Now I've found myself zipping through several C+H comic strips a day, and I must say it's astounding how many great ideas Bill Watterson had. Calvin and Hobbes will always be the greatest.

One day I'll read them to my kids and hopefully they'll have the same joy and love for it as a I did when I was little.
My dad even wanted to name me Calvin, but my mom wouldn't let him, but he convinced her give me a name "kinda close to Calvin."

Liam Wilson Don't get me wrong, I love Peanuts too, of course, but like these guys said, Calvin and Hobbes wasn't licensed and ran only for a short timespan of ten years. With the cultural phenomenon Peanuts has become with half a century worth of strips, all these tv specials, movies, games, clothes and all other merchandise, it can just get a little bit overwhelming sometimes. Plus, I always feel bad for Charlie Brown.

Watterson was the illustrator and A child prodigy was the writer.
The writer wrote the screenplay for Star Wars before his first birthday. His initials are A. M. and can be found in the symbols behind Darth Vader when he lifts up the guy by the neck. The M is in the negative space and is upside down on the right symbol.
His mother's maiden name is Perkins. Porkins from Star Wars and Susie Derkins are one letter from the truth.
Many popular movies and TV series have been written by him as well. He was very prolific until... his retirement.

As I get older, Calvin and Hobbes gets funnier and Garfield gets worse.

As a kid I always asked my parents to buy the Garfield magazine, only because it always had a few pages of Calvin and Hobbes in it. Of course i love Garfield too, but C&H is way better...

I love this series and could relate to Calvin a lot,Hobbes as well, but in all seriousness I would NEVER want to have a kid like him.

I love Calvin and Hobbes but I would put it at a tie for first with Gary Larson's The Far Side
