Thank you all for helping me turn negative feelings into something positive. I hope to do the same for you. Making this channel has helped me get over social anxiety and frustrations living abroad. These past 8 years here, I’ve stayed low key and never knew making a RUclips channel would be so fun. -Anming
Really? My gosh you are very talented, your chinese is so great, japanese is good as well, although i Heard a little acent in this last... but is awesome , congratulations! Omedetouu!
I think exactly these reactions of people are the reason why watching videos like yours. Its not common. Otherwise i understand why you didnt like before. But i like your attitude just keep up your work. Im a big fan . Greetings from Germany
Thanks so much for your comment. I love when other RUclipsrs leave a comment. I like to teach a little bit about Chinese customs on this channel and tell people that it's common for Chinese people to try to start a conversation by giving a compliment.
I think people probably get very excited when listening to you and knowing that you took the time to learn their language. People in the US still do that with me all the time, and I've been living here for 4 years and studied English my whole life. I too, was very bothered by that in the past. But then, everytime my husband says a whole phrase in my native language I get super excited too, so I started to feel better about it. I believe that at least 90% of the time people are not trying to offend you, they're just happy! :)
I got frustrated in Korea as well. Anytime I spoke even the smallest bit of Korean the main reaction was "wow your Korean is so good!" And at first it's great because you love getting complimented as you're learning but after a while you get tired of hearing it and just want people to treat you as a local. But it's also because they appreciate that you took the time to learn their language while most foreigners dont so I cant get mad either ^^
How do they usually say it in Korean? I never noticed it but my Korean never gets very good. If I know what to listen for I'll listen for it next time I'm there. I try to do daily tasks in Korean but I'm nowhere near conversational, let alone fluent. In China or Japan just "please" or "thank you" is enough to trigger a compliment.
@@aineangeles2648 It never happens to me in any European country, even the least studied languages. Usually they just answer in English or in the local language without commenting (-:
@@andrewdunbar828 This is because there are a lot of immigrants in Europe and it is quite normal for the countries people that this immigrants speak the countries language brokenly. However, if someone says that they have only been in the country for a few months, are only visiting or you can't hear anymore that somenone is a immigrant (Sometimes you see the ID Card of someone and only understand in this moment that he or she is not a native) it will also attract a compliment from the people.
Sorry Anming I suscribed at this moment , when I read about the 70% of viewers that are not suscribed LOL , I think Your chinese is not amazing , What is really amazing its your attitude, humility , the calm that seeks to inspire those of us who want to learn other languages, and the search for warm smiles from people who must live abroad, away from their family and sharing other meals and custom. t I hope you return to you German roots and to my beloved Spanish that you learned in childhood, the amazing era when you forged that character that we and the 70% enjoy in your channel ! See you ASAP.
My goal is to get where you are: just fit in. At the moment, since I’m still a beginner, I truly enjoy the “You speak Chinese!!” or the “Your Chinese is good”, but you’re right, it’ll get old pretty soon. Most commenting for support really, wasn’t sure what to say.
The sentences I can speak the clearest in Mandarin are the ones explaining that my Chinese isn't very good and the reasons why that is the case. The problem is I speak those sentences so fluently now that the listener assumes I'm being modest so they continue on at native-pace.
@Timmy Dragonborn And if you are Chinese (not second or third generation in an Anglo country) you English probably isn't going to be "great" any more than Arnold Schwarzenegger's is. Yeah, you may have the vocab, but the thick accent is super hard to lose.
In China: *Foreigners who says any random word in Chinese with inaccurate pronunciation and tone* = Wow!! Your Chinese is Amazing In Italy: *A Native speaker who makes accidentally a grammar or spelling mistake in their native language* = You're illiterate!
In Italy if I try to explain that my Italian is bad but my Spanish is OK they just say "No no no I can't speak Spanish". But if I just speak in Spanish mixed with whatever Italian words I know then nobody notices and we can almost chat about anything in Spagntaliano (-:
@@andrewdunbar828 I don't ever bother anymore. There in Italy i was speaking to people straight like this: "Bongiorno! Donde esta il pistacchio? io no lo encuentro"
I’m Italian. I just learnt Spanish and English VCing in discord with some random folks. Yesterday a girl asked me if I was Spanish mother tongue and I was so happy.
@@robson2256 . That's so funny!! I'm a native English and Spanish speaker and now I'm learning Italian. I can just picture you inserting Spanish words into Italian sentences. Haha
You know what? I've been watching your videos pop up more often in my feed and watched you every once in a while. But I never even thought about subscribing until you mentioned it at the end of the video. No joke. That was all it took for me. You have good content and are not afraid to talk to people. It's fun watching you walk around, find new food, and meet new people. Being able to see a different culture is fun too. ~From: A random American
It's nice to see you interacting with people and having conversations and it's nice to see what's in the shops and restaurants. But make no mistake you are the star of your show and it is your personality and the way you display it in your conversation that keeps us coming back for more
Do not take it badly when you get that reaction. I take it as a huge compliment when people say my English is so good. My mother tongue is Spanish but I went to a full-time English private school. I was able to learn English like an English native speaker. Actually one time on a layover in the U.S. a CBP officer was incredibly intrigued by my lack of "Spanish accent". He thought I was illegally living in the U.S. and completely breaching my tourist visa. Asking a LOT of questions and being incredibly suspicious. Then I told him how I learned English, we both had a good laugh and he said "good job" while stamping my passport and letting me do my layover :)
I am Chinese American and I envy your fluency! I feel that when people tell you well you speak the language of the land, they are impressed to find that you are so intelligent and hardworking to learn!
I hit the subscribe button and you are not cheesy! Thanks for inspiring me to learn Japanese! Keep making videos because your genuine. You should think about starting a patreon page.
You made a valid point about hearing "Your Chinese is Amazing" so often. People with good hearts (as you know) are eager to compliment "foreigners" that speak as well as you do. They are always smiling :)
The lady behind the counter said "She speaks in a Fujian dialect." That's like a lonely Martian hiding on earth saying: "Hey, check this out - she's one of us!"
I get the opposite reaction. Born in Japan, look Japanese, raised in America, don’t speak Japanese well, living in Tokyo and people give me this weird look. Why doesn’t he speak and understand Japanese?
Agh I have the Chinese American experience of native Chinese parents raising me only with English because they wanted me to excel in American school… and now I hate that I can’t speak Chinese like a native Chinese speaker
I understand your frustration as you’ve spent such a long time studying and learning the languages and your dedication to it shows in all your videos! We love to see it. Your feelings are understandable. I think it’s difficult because there isn’t a huge population of western foreigners going to those countries with fluent Chinese or Japanese like yourself. One positive thing about all of this, is you’re the fun one that stands out and just your presence is a conversation starter to most! 😁
Oriental Pearl Keep doing you though Anming! Your presence is unique. I am upset that 70% of viewers aren’t subbed! All of you need to hit that sub button and notification bell! maybe it would be more helpful if I also wrote that in Chinese and Japanese :(
It's a compliment, because you made the effort to learn Chinese so well. And a surprise because you are a foreigner in Japan speaking Chinese. You will always stand out. (Opposite situation: "German Girl in America" on RUclips looks completely American and sounds that way too. If she didn't mention it, people would never know.)
If I could subscribe twice, I would :) Thank you for making these videos! It's fun to see everyone's reactions, but I imagine it gets old after awhile.
@@OrientalPearl Yay! Well, I hope more people subscribe instead of just watch, haha. Your videos are really fun and actually comforting. It's nice to see all the friendly faces you meet. :) And the cultural education you add is so appreciated.
thank you for doing this! i've been studying mandarin for 3 years now for my degree and i still lack confidence to have a conversation with chinese people here in Malaysia. your videos gave me some confidence and i will definitely try harder to speak mandarin here!! keep doing this kind of videosss
my cousin is white, but was born and raised in japan and she hates when this happens too because it underscores her difference from those around her. sometimes people just want to blend! but anyone who "looks foreign" and speaks the language fluently isn't the norm, so it's hard to blame them for pointing it out or being surprised. tough situation though for sure!
I can so understand as an introvert, you learn to blend in, not to stand out but I guess you are a bit of a rarity and I think you just make people happy when they find out you can speak their language so well. I have watched some other channels too, I have noticed that especially with the Chinese when you speak their language instead of English you see a whole different side to them. Your videos are so wholesome, I love the conversations and not only just for the amusing shock reactions.
The reality is, you're somewhat of a unicorn. I can't imagine they encounter too many Americans or foreigners that have such a command or fluency of their language, it's super impressive. I really enjoy watching your videos, thanks for posting. 🙂
Just wanted to say hi. Just a regular British RUclips viewer. I started out by watching xiaomanyc on RUclips alot and RUclips recommend your channel and have been watching everything you've been doing for months. Keep up the great videos you're doing, it's entertaining and youve got a great personality.
Wow, thank you! The RUclips algorithm linked his channel and mine together so a lot of the viewers here are fans of his. Thanks for watching. This channel had 200 subscribers just 4 months ago. You got in at the very beginning.
@@OrientalPearl I sure did. I'll be sticking around, it'll be good to see what you do once you're back in China. One thing I want to try as a result of your channel is bubble tea but I've never seen it in England before. Maybe one day.... Stay safe
I wonder if you saw my message about giving a gift to friend at their company by mail. i was shocked about that as it backfired and the boss was annoyed. So many culture things i need to learn.
It happens everywhere to many people. I (a Chinese) have lived in the USA and Canada more than 20 years. One time when I visited a store in New York state, the store staff said to me "Your English is very good." I had exactly same feeling as you. My son was born and grew up in Michigan, one day a local Michigan guy greeted him in Chinese "你好!". He told me he even felt offended. I agree with you that people want to fit in. This kind of situation rarely happens in immigrant cities such as Toronto where people won't praise your English no matter how good your English is. I think the situation you're experiencing will be getting better as more and more foreigners are living in China and even their children were born there. BTW, Many foreigners' Chinese are still not at a workable level even they have been living in China for many years. Your Chinese is REALLY REALLY good!. LOL
I really enjoy all your videos. I am so glad you've accepted and embraced the way people feel. For many of them it's probably the first time any foreigner has spoken with fluency. I enjoy how so many people are amazed and happy they can engage with their native language. Thank you for sharing. :-)
I've always noticed that once you reach a certain level people stop commenting on your language. I don't know about how it is in China though. Only lived in Japan
Hey, I subscribed after my 1st viewing. I wish I was in the first 100 subscribers. I was way back in 6,000. My daughter has autism and she knows a few Chinese words and watches your videos with me and smiles. I speak pretty good English for being from the Midwest. Have a great weekend! We all love you!!
What is so wonderful to hear from the Chinese people you meet is not only that they think your Chinese is amazing, but that many of them notice immediately that you speak with a certain Chinese dialect. I have heard many foreigners who speak Turkish quite fluently but they always have the accent of their origin, which i guess is very normal or easy to do. You obviously have a good ear or can adapt with more ease than others, this obviously has a lot to do with your ability and level of speaking the Chinese language, which is obviously very good.
I was quite surprised that they were able to identify where I studied in China. I thought my Chinese became quite bland after leaving Harbin, but apparently the accent is still there.
@@OrientalPearl Fun fact. An accent discloses part of speaker's identity, where you from, what do you like, what things are you used to or experienced at etc.
I would have thought if you frequent the same stores and venues in an area you'd get known pretty quickly as that foreigner that speaks Chinese very well and then rapidly you just become someone who they speak to every day who just happens to be a foreigner. This was my experience anyway.
We do love the videos. I have a friend here that worked in Japan for several years and married a Japanese lady. I told him of your videos and he and his family watch them often. Like you, he tells me how difficult it was and still is to live here after spending several years in Japan. Keep the videos coming.
Like your friend said in the last video, he felt better when people stopped pointing it out and just accepted him as one them. 09:07 That just gave me a flashback to the "Patty Hype" episode of Spongebob...
@@chrik25 Well, being from the U.S. I don't say "Wow, your English is great" to an Asian looking person assuming they must not speak it. Kind of the same thing right?
@@krisfrederick5001 You can if you want, i won't be offended at all. I would just say thanks and walk away even though I am born in the u.s. When someone say something nice I usually take it and thank them. Basically i dont get mad because they didnt know my history. That is why i think that kind of mindset is entitled in a way. Im not here to offend by the way. Just my 2 cents.
I am an introvert and A LOT of times I really dislike talking to people, even though I believe it's easy. Still, you make it look FUN and it makes me WANT to do it because I like fun things hahaha
I think that sometimes it feels like they’re degrading you a little, like with Japanese people they’ll be like “日本語が上手だ” when ALL you said was こんにちわ but then sometimes people are just really impressed because they think that foreigners won’t be bothered to learn as they think that we think everyone speaks English so it’s 50/50 for me
It is so very interesting to see what you do. Talking to people, having the same small talk with different subjects. And then now and then I hear a word in one of your sentences. That makes me happy and feek good. Thank you for keep making this big effort.
No...you'll never fit in. And that's great. Especially in a culture where everyone is expected to "fit in". Having the diversity is great. People will eventually warm up to it.
Out of the countries of Asia, Japan is the one that I found wider diversity and where individuality/personality is encouraged, I didn't find that elsewhere in Asia
You speak Chinese really well and with confidence I guess that's why people feel excited hearing you speaking Chinese in Japan , I understand your feeling I had the same situation speaking fluent French . Btw your Videos help me a lot improving my Chinese and get me know to everyday Chinese speaking coversations keep going ❤❤
That was an interesting fun journey around this area, I am one who can't get there myself so I appreciate your adventures and being taken along. Thanks 😀
It’s definitely not a secret that you didn’t like it when ppl would Compliment you on how good your Chinese is. You literally say it in every video lol
I don't really speak Chinese or wanted to learn it but you give me some kind of motivation. I always though Chinese was super hard to learn but maybe a few phrases can't hurt too be learned. Entertaining video as always 🙋♀️
The user of this computer has logged out. So my close companion, the monitor, and I, the keyboard, would like to take this rare opportunity to praise your awesome Mandarin skills. Oh, we have to shut down now, bye...
Or this "你用筷子很好" i get it all the time..lol and yes i agree us westerners get the compliments when speaking way to much but i understand their feelings in the way that you have taken the time to learn their lingo so praise is a natural reaction no?
At least you are not in a party of 10 having dinner being the only caucasian. One asian ask for a fork and the waitress automatically passed it to you (the only caucasian there and actually can use chopsticks).
I think it’s really because most English speaking countries are very multicultural and are filled with more than just the natives like in America in wouldn’t really be rare to see an Asian person speaking good english
I still find it amazing that you can speak Chinese and Japanese so well, my wife of 30 years is from Japan and i`ve visited many times but I still would`nt be able to hold a conversation with anyone, maybe its a memory thing and mine is absolutely terrible, although I never stay any longer than 3 months at a time.
My memory isn't that great either. I have to reinforce everything I know everyday just being in this environment otherwise I would start to forget things too.
There are many Westerners speaking Mandarin on RUclips channel, some of them are engaging and some are not. I keep watching your clips and subscribed to your channel as I find you a very affable lady that I can relate to. To be honest, some of your contents are not strong, eg going around talking to people you met, but I find them interesting, may be it’s your way of engaging with people. I also find you looking a typical Western lady, but inside very much has an oriental soul.
Well, my videos are more of a vlog about living over in China and Japan. Some of the other Chinese speaking RUclipsrs are going slap-stick humor. That's their style and I have my own.
Oriental Pearl I admire you for not compromising your principles and resorting to misleading titles and sensationalised content. Your channel will continue to grow and you'll keep your integrity too! :D

As a previous expat living in Thailand, I thought it was respectful to learn the language. Though far from your abilities I saw too spectrums. One was appreciation of speaking Thai when interacting with locals and them knowing I was trying my best. This was especially true outside the large cities. The other was speaking Thai and the local looking at me as to what was I doing and saying even though I was correctly conversing as Thai is a very tonal language. I knew I was a ‘farang’ (foreigner) but still enjoyed the language challenge. Continue what you’re doing and stay safe. We are hoping to get back to SE Asia next year, including Japan, if travel opens up from the US again.
Oriental Pearl I lived in Bangkok for 3 years for work and traveled for another 4 years which required a Thai work permit. I had Thai nationals work for me and still periodically email with them. Several Americans working in the office ended up marrying Thais and now live in the US. You shamed me (not true) in becoming a subscriber!
In my case, some people think I'm Italian & if I go to a store in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood they'll start talking to me in English & when I start speaking Spanish they say, oh you speak Spanish? A cashier at a McDonald's asked what I wanted & I noticed she had a heavy Spanish accent & when I responded in Spanish she was like que tu hablas Espanol (you speak Spanish?) I just smile & have fun with it! It's actually a nice surprise to them that you speak their language, I luv it... Btw your Chinese accent is so sweet! Keep up the great video's, it's really fun seeing the reaction of the locals!
I just, now, only realized that when you mentioned "70% of viewers are not subscribed to my channel", I was one of them! So sorry. I really enjoy your videos, I just never realized that I wasn't subscribed. But I am now and turned on my notification bell :)
In my opinion, always enjoy a compliment. 99% of your normal life will be filled with only negative things, thus, no matter how many times you receive the compliment, always smile and know that, that person took time out of their day to say something nice. People say my Japanese is great all the time and I always love it 4 years on.
New subscriber here. Your pronunciation is great. Your vocabulary is also great. You speak better than I do and I am Chinese. I am conversational in Spanish as well but need to brush up on my Chinese. Thanks for the great videos!
I feel you on this, since I've felt the same growing up in Japan as a foreigner. At some point, you'll get used to it and it won't even bother you at all.
I feel the same way about my Korean. I live in Seoul and go to University here, been studying Korean language for 5+ years and hearing "wow your korean is great" is almost a backhanded comment. Like, 'You're definitely a foreigner and you sound like it, but I can understand it so it's cool'. It does get old for sure, but when it leads to an actual conversation and the natives seem genuinely happy and enthusiastic that you took the time to learn their culture and language that makes it all worth it to me. THAT's when I love hearing it, because it's very hit or miss if people even want to talk to you. Especially recently because of covid, I've noticed a lot more people wanting nothing to do with me, despite me having been here for a long time.
no notification this time even though I've subscribed. It just shows you that your way of thinking on things changes when you get used to something ie it bothered you when people reacted to your Chinese but not time has passed you love the reactions to it, just goes to show you how much you as a person change overtime, And I hear you have you subscribed yet sounds corny but needs must. Keep up the good work hope to see more awesome videos much ♥ from Scotland

At the end of the day I don't have 100% control over the channel. My favorite video is "Locked out of China", but it wasn't very well received with viewers. I will make videos I want to do every once and a while, but because RUclips is my main source of income right now, I have to make videos you want to see, not just ones I want to make.
Learning to be fluent must be the goal but then also to fit into new community. I think it will only come when a person commits to a single place for a long time. It may change for you when you can graduate and put down roots. Thanks for your encouraging videos they really are inspirational.
I relate to this 100% after 4 years in Japan. The NiHonGo JyOuzU gets old really quick and can feel patronizing but at this point I think of it as an NPC line programmed into a vast majority of Japanese people in the rare mind blanking chance they meet a foreigner (who speaks Japanese). What’s really weird is my students or graduates (trying to make conversation I’m guessing by) saying “wow your Japanese has gotten better!” Sigh. Thanks I guess. Your positive spin on it though is refreshing. That mans big smile when you ordered the boba tea tho. You make Chinese seem so interesting. Hearing you speak it makes me want to learn too :) Why are you being so modest! She called you out! Haha
That's the word I was going to use too "patronizing", but I deleted it from the video before I uploaded it because I didn't want to get any angry comments about it.
Those beautiful dragons though...we have a semi- large Native American Casino with a Chinese Restaurant that use to have an enormous brass one hanging from the ceiling and the tables had the Mahjong tiles inside the table glass tops. I think most people feel the same. I guess it's a mixed bag. On one hand you feel happy getting praised, but on the other hand, you know that they say it to almost anyone who can speak the language whether basic or advanced. But then, I realise I do it too myself! Totally not judging but I'm recalling your video of the Japanese lady working at a Chinese shop whom you thought was Chinese. Thought it was really entertaining to see you react when the tables were turned. Btw, when people comment on my Japanese, I used to reply the standard まだまだです... Nowadays, I'll just reply オッ、ありがとう!Takes some people by surprise - probably not what they expect to hear, but that's just me trying to be positive and giving myself a pat on the back : ) I'm Asian so it doesn't happen so often, but the 'Your English is really good' still gets to me though.
Firstly, I want to say don’t worry about fitting in. It’s one of those things you cannot control. It’s up there with “omg you’re left handed” or something similar. I honestly think that you can see a difference in the meaning of the phrase “your (insert language) is so good” when it’s said in different places. In Asia people are genuinely praising you whereas the same comment in UK or America might have a patronising tone to it. I’ve found if you stay in one place long enough the community will accept you and you’ll fit right in. Keep up the great videos.
Hi there! Been watching your vlogs since then and I just saw this. Well, to somehow explain the reason why some of the locals of that specific country says “you’re good in speaking in for example japanese or chinese” that is because their language itself is hard to study. Even if you will speak “bisaya or tagalog” here in the Philippines i would be so proud and give two thumbs up for you. It amazes me watching you speak diff languages coz me myself wants to speak japanese fluently. However, JAPANESE IS REALLY SO HARD TO LEARN for me who’s just studying alone at home. By the way, keep on posting vlogs coz it makes my day. 気をつけてねー
Ohh I understand that very well, I'm 44 years old and my English is so bad that I write this with google translation and it annoys me even if I dare to speak English well, what can I say, people look like me surprised at how those who tell you your chinese is really very good only believe me your people mean it positively, mine rather not because it is assumed that you can speak english, i am now learning chinese on my own and find your channel interesting and inspiring👍👌

I'm so glad that your husband is learning your language too! That's wonderful.
I know what you mean! It's a really awkward feeling. But I don't care about it anymore. There is no point in getting made about it now.
Trust me Germans and French do that also and the Polish and the Spanish etc
How do they usually say it in Korean? I never noticed it but my Korean never gets very good. If I know what to listen for I'll listen for it next time I'm there. I try to do daily tasks in Korean but I'm nowhere near conversational, let alone fluent. In China or Japan just "please" or "thank you" is enough to trigger a compliment.

Thank you so much! I think you said it just like it is.
The sentences I can speak the clearest in Mandarin are the ones explaining that my Chinese isn't very good and the reasons why that is the case. The problem is I speak those sentences so fluently now that the listener assumes I'm being modest so they continue on at native-pace.
Keep studying! You'll get all the compliments too.
There are 2 different kinds of Chinese. Gotta learn both of them.
@Timmy Dragonborn And if you are Chinese (not second or third generation in an Anglo country) you English probably isn't going to be "great" any more than Arnold Schwarzenegger's is. Yeah, you may have the vocab, but the thick accent is super hard to lose.
In China:
*Foreigners who says any random word in Chinese with inaccurate pronunciation and tone* = Wow!! Your Chinese is Amazing
In Italy:
*A Native speaker who makes accidentally a grammar or spelling mistake in their native language* = You're illiterate!
It's sooooo true! lol
Haha
Hello from Alberta, Canada. Love, love, love your videos. Keep them coming. I always look forward to them and I am a long time subscriber.
Thank you Canada! I appreciate that you have been one of the 30% that subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing. Now you will know when new videos come out. I don't post on a schedule. I just do 2 videos a week whenever I finish them.
It's nice to see you interacting with people and having conversations and it's nice to see what's in the shops and restaurants. But make no mistake you are the star of your show and it is your personality and the way you display it in your conversation that keeps us coming back for more
I hope you keep coming back for more too. 😊
From what I've seen so far Anming, you seem to turn everything into a positive. Your dedication and hard work(studies) shines through.😘
Wow, thank you!
You made a valid point about hearing "Your Chinese is Amazing" so often. People with good hearts (as you know) are eager to compliment "foreigners" that speak as well as you do. They are always smiling :)
It's true, and I'm happy to show it to the world.
@@OrientalPearl You are one of the most positive people I have ever encountered....stay true to youself.
I'm sure that brings many different challenges too. I have a friend from Hong Kong here that doesn't speak any Japanese.
Agh I have the Chinese American experience of native Chinese parents raising me only with English because they wanted me to excel in American school… and now I hate that I can’t speak Chinese like a native Chinese speaker
Enjoy the remarks of those Chinese. They are just surprised.
That's right. Japan is actually more used to foreigners so people don't react nearly as much over here.
Oriental Pearl Keep doing you though Anming! Your presence is unique. I am upset that 70% of viewers aren’t subbed! All of you need to hit that sub button and notification bell! maybe it would be more helpful if I also wrote that in Chinese and Japanese :(
Your videos are very inspiring and informative. Thank you for making this content as it can be applied anywhere!
We enjoy watching the reactions. So like it or not..you are stuck with it, and us.
That's right! I've come to terms with that too! lol
That's right and I blended right in during a trip to Germany a few years ago.
If I could subscribe twice, I would :) Thank you for making these videos! It's fun to see everyone's reactions, but I imagine it gets old after awhile.
Thank you so much! One time makes me happy. I used to be happy to get one new subscriber per day before March of this year.
Give it a try. I had great conversations with Chinese-Malaysian taxi drivers when I visited last year.
my cousin is white, but was born and raised in japan and she hates when this happens too because it underscores her difference from those around her. sometimes people just want to blend! but anyone who "looks foreign" and speaks the language fluently isn't the norm, so it's hard to blame them for pointing it out or being surprised. tough situation though for sure!
I’m glad you like the conversations too.
The reality is, you're somewhat of a unicorn. I can't imagine they encounter too many Americans or foreigners that have such a command or fluency of their language, it's super impressive.
I really enjoy watching your videos, thanks for posting. 🙂
You phrased it well. That's exactly what it is. lol
I read just about all of the messages. If I gave it a heart, it was definitely read.
LOL
Anming is like playing Pokemon Go around Chinatown. Definitely caught a few valuable ones today! :D
Fore sure! Actually this footage is all from last Friday and I have even more to release yet. I made 3 videos from this one day out.

Thanks for being here this entire time. The first 100 subs were all my family.
It's a genuine compliment tbh
The good thing is that they change staff everyday. So I can hit the same exact store and see totally different workers.
We do love the videos. I have a friend here that worked in Japan for several years and married a Japanese lady. I told him of your videos and he and his family watch them often. Like you, he tells me how difficult it was and still is to live here after spending several years in Japan. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks for sharing! It makes me so happy to hear that families can watch these video together. There aren't many family channels out there on RUclips.
I've heard that my Swedish is amazing my whole life even though I was born here almost some 50 years ago. Edit: Love your videos! :D
Ha ha, well I hope it doesn't bother you too much.
@@OrientalPearl Nope it does not! hehe!
May I ask what your ethnicity is?
It's a compliment in this era of divide, hate and negativity enjoy the gesture to tell you that you are doing something right/good.
Like your friend said in the last video, he felt better when people stopped pointing it out and just accepted him as one them. 09:07 That just gave me a flashback to the "Patty Hype" episode of Spongebob...
That's exactly right! Most people who live abroad for many years feel the same way. They just want to live their daily lives like everyone else.
I never really understand that mindset. Kinda entitled way of thinking to be honest.
@@chrik25 Sure, good things.
I am an introvert and A LOT of times I really dislike talking to people, even though I believe it's easy. Still, you make it look FUN and it makes me WANT to do it because I like fun things hahaha
I think that sometimes it feels like they’re degrading you a little, like with Japanese people they’ll be like “日本語が上手だ” when ALL you said was こんにちわ but then sometimes people are just really impressed because they think that foreigners won’t be bothered to learn as they think that we think everyone speaks English so it’s 50/50 for me
That's right... that was the exact reason I didn't like it. But now I don't really get upset about it anymore.
also I think it's because speakers like OP have a much better Japanese accent than japanese people have English accents when they speak rnglish
It is so very interesting to see what you do. Talking to people, having the same small talk with different subjects. And then now and then I hear a word in one of your sentences. That makes me happy and feek good. Thank you for keep making this big effort.
You are making progress! I'm proud of you!
No...you'll never fit in. And that's great. Especially in a culture where everyone is expected to "fit in". Having the diversity is great. People will eventually warm up to it.
I can always get away with being strange over here! YA! lol in a good way!

Most importantly though, how was the 5 color xiaolongbao?
It was amazing! I've never seen that in China.
All these videos are so fun to watch! Especially in these crazy times, stay safe out there!
Glad you like them! Everyone needs a reason to smile nowadays.
Happy to hear that! It's kind of fun to learn a little bit as well. You never know when you might use it.

Thank you Canada! Will do!
Or this "你用筷子很好" i get it all the time..lol and yes i agree us westerners get the compliments when speaking way to much but i understand their feelings in the way that you have taken the time to learn their lingo so praise is a natural reaction no?
That's right! I've gotten that many times. I can't get mad though because my mom can't use them and neither can my dad. lol
At least you are not in a party of 10 having dinner being the only caucasian. One asian ask for a fork and the waitress automatically passed it to you (the only caucasian there and actually can use chopsticks).
Anming you really are a Chinese at heart.
funny right? I would never think to tell a Chinese person that boy their English is go good
I think it’s really because most English speaking countries are very multicultural and are filled with more than just the natives like in America in wouldn’t really be rare to see an Asian person speaking good english

You and I are in the same boat. It really sucks not knowing when we can go back.
How long did you live in Thailand?
That's a funny story. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

In my opinion, always enjoy a compliment. 99% of your normal life will be filled with only negative things, thus, no matter how many times you receive the compliment, always smile and know that, that person took time out of their day to say something nice.
People say my Japanese is great all the time and I always love it 4 years on.

@@OrientalPearl Great! Thank you so much!
That's a good point! They might just say it because they don't know how to start a conversation with you.
no notification this time even though I've subscribed.
It just shows you that your way of thinking on things changes when you get used to something ie it bothered you when people reacted to your Chinese but not time has passed you love the reactions to it, just goes to show you how much you as a person change overtime, And I hear you have you subscribed yet sounds corny but needs must.

I'm so glad that these video are inspiring people.
That’s a mature growth and good on you for that. Keep pushing
The colorful dragons are simply beautiful and your presence seems to brighten 🌟💫 the various shops atmosphere. I'm really glad to give you some helpful advice. I've been a language teacher for many years.
That's so true. Sometimes you can say just one word and get complimented.
Love how relaxing your channel is. But I feel bad I only speak two languages.
Speaking 2 languages is amazing! I didn't know any foreign languages for most of my life.
That's why I decided not to let it bother me anymore.
I've watched some of your videos and must confess, you are amazing.
Thank you Martin!
気をつけてねー
Thank you so much! I’m really glad that you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for the comment.
@@OrientalPearl i can’t believe you replied! Hehe thank you for the videos since missed japan so much ✨ stay safe and healthy anmingchan!!🙇♂️
I speak tagalog with english accent. I get " your tagalog is really good " all the time and it always makes me smile.
That's really cool. People would have loved it if I spoke tagalog in Manila last year, but sadly I don't know any.
Take it as a compliment that your language skills get noticed but i get what you say. Its nice to be nice!
