Camp Rice was the early WWII DTC base for the 5th Armored Division. After the 5th shipped out, Camp Rice was not used again because it was considered too close to where war games occurred. You passed by 3 more DTC camp sites while driving to I-10 at Desert Center. Also passed by Rice Army Airfield site and Freda Army Supply Depot site. The buildings at the shoe fence were Rice School. The burnt foundation seen in the background was the original one-room school house. Some jerk burned it down in the 1990's. There's a small cemetery between the highway and RR tracks near the school site.
If the BLM decides that an old building, like the school, is too unsafe for people to explore/inhabit and isn't "worth" fixing up they've been known to burn them down. It's possible it was a safety thing.
@@MtnBadger Possibly but the last time I saw the school standing, it was in good condition. Only the window glass had been busted out. A blackboard was still on the front (east) wall. And further, the site might still be county property, not BLM.

Yes that tree is very popular. I believe they cut that tree down because they didn't want people stopping and leaving shoes on it any longer. I believe there's actually two trees on Rice road where I believe you're at right now or in this video at least. Every once in awhile they go into that area and clean out all the shoes. And then people start doing it again.
When you " PARK " off the side of the road, do you ever get checked by the police who may just want to see if anyone is in trouble or maybe ask for an autograph??
I'm surprised that random people or Highway Patrol don't check her out more often. Looks like an abandon car in the middle of the dessert. Only thing that probably prevents that is that she usually "camps" after dark and gets up at dawn. Cars like that are more noticeable during daylight hours. I've pulled over before (in a populated area) and had people stop to ask if I was "ok". Once in an empty hotel parking lot about noon time. I was up at dawn for sunrise and was taking a nap. Got woken up to see if I was "ok".
The whole point of camping out is not to be bothered! The only people that get rousted out by the cops are the ones too lazy or too afraid of leaving the edge of the freeway.
@@goldfieldgary Not sure what you mean but I get it about people parking on the edge of the highway. There are no vast expanses of desert or lonely country roads in my state so when I pull over to nap (when I'm tired and afraid of falling asleep while driving - not camping overnight) there are going to be several cars passing me. When I'm on the highway I pull into a rest stop and I'm never bothered. The East is a lot different than the West and if she explores this side of the country she'll find it a lot different and parking overnight will not go unnoticed. No BLM land here. The whole point in my comment was that sometimes cars parked out in the middle of nowhere (near Vegas) sometimes have a dead body in the trunk so police tend to check them out occasionally.
@@djg5950 very true, it's easy for us in the western states to take it for granted that we can camp almost anywhere and sleep unmolested. If and when you come out to explore (and I hope you do), bring a sleeping bag and a Camp Rest pad to lay it on, and experience real freedom.
@@goldfieldgary I have traveled in Ca. Az., Nv., Utah and NM in the 1990's and last time 2005 (Ca. Eastern Sierra Nevada Rte. 395). I slept in motels though (back when it was only $35 at Motel 6). Coolest sign post, actually called a sign forest,is at Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory ,Canada. Omg it's amazing.
Sure am glad you found the "iron mtn" signpost. But where was "Bellingham" on it?
And yes, Bouse was an interesting stop for me, the city feller.
Felt bad for WH when she realized she remembered who that woman was on that "Missing Person" bulletin. Sad ending as well. Otherwise, yet another Great Video as always! Cheers From Ohio
The Stuport, greetings from Norwalk Ohio.
@@johnhipp8267 Cheers John...I'm in COWlumbus...better known as Armpit! Back in the very early days of Google if a person looked up Columbus, Ohio...we were described as "The Armpit of The Midwest"...Hilarious!
The Salton sea always makes me think of val kilmer.
Why?
@@dkizxpt-su3ze the movie he was in. Was a good movie.
I live in the middle of nowhere in Colorado; it, a beautiful place.
Hi wunderhussy I was wondering if your modeling pics were available
When you " PARK " off the side of the road, do you ever get checked by the police who may just want to see if anyone is in trouble
or maybe ask for an autograph??
I'd LOVE to get a conversion van and live in it. Maybe run into Wonderhussy as she visits all my favorite places (Death Valley area and Joshua Tree area) ? That would make my day. Love the fact that she explores all these out-of-the-way places. Oh, I did go to see the Salton Sea but didn't go far enough south to see what she shows.
Thank you for the panoramic views.
Best in the West lol I figured you would get it. They probably don't have any size 16 shoes there.
Sorry to hear about the missing woman
Nice living signpost that probably changes as things fall off of it and new signs are added. 😆
Wheeling, WV is about 150 miles from my house.
I take it you don't live in the California desert ?
Best in the west.......lol guess I yelled at my phone loud enough for you to hear!
Yes you did lol
Love the country there. You be careful. Love your channel
