I had the mini-hybrid before and kept selenopsis in it. It worked very well up until the queen went infertile. Now I have another colony of selenopsis and they're growing very fast and will be putting them in the selenopsis hybrid I bought back then meant to expand the previous colony. I like tarheel nest more though. So much more natural tbh.
@Novo Ants I have very disappointing news. The ants canada selenopsis nest failed to keep the fire ants in. The smaller ants were able to squeeze through the hydration holes xD I had to put tape over the holes and are in the process of moving to their previous nest. Why market a nest for selenopsis that can't house selenopsis?! Or did I just get a defect?
@@dst_darkness oh no that’s terrible. Yeah that is a good question, perhaps send them an email and ask. Let me know how you go. I have only housed larger species in my one so I’ve had no issues.
You totally should, they are great pets. Lots to see, they move around, very interesting to watch go about their day. You can see inside the nest and watch the journey from single queen to colony. Thanks for watching
Depends on the size of Camponotus. Smaller species would be fine but maybe large ones like Consobrinus or Nigriceps might struggle but you would be surprised what they fit through
Same experience for shipping for me... I live in canada and wanted to order 20 test tube... Ended up paying the same has for 40 test tubes! 🤭 oups! + 20$ extra Fedex charges!!! 💸
Uhh hi are do banded sugar ant queens need food in the early stages of making there colonies or do they have fat stores in there back? My grammar sucks lol
Hi, great question. The species is fully claustral which means the queen doesn’t need food until the first workers (nanitics) arrive. The queen used her wing muscles as energy. The wing muscles are liquified for energy.
Depends on the size of the ant species but you would want to be close to half to 3/4 filling before transferring. Also you would want to take into account the growth speed of the species.
Thanks 😊. You may be right. Some of their products I’m not a fan of but this hybrid nest looked interesting. The price of this was was alright really compared to others out there but when shipping was added the price was expensive.
According to some these nests are of bad quality and some species like Camponotus and Formica can chew out of it, I have one of these but I'm still raising a Camponotus ligniperda colony I would like to move in it one day so I can't confirm nor deny it, have you tried housing any colonies in one of the to prove or disprove those claims?
Thanks for watching. I currently have a colony of Iridomyrmex Purpureus, meat ants, in this nest. They are known for their powerful jaws but they haven’t tried to eat or chew the nest yet. I can’t confirm either way but I would be surprised. Have a look at my meat ant colony videos to see. Hope that helps
@@NovoAnts Yes thank you! Those people who dislike the nest also dislike AntsCanada for his "unethical experiments" so maybe that has something to do with it :P
That’s a good question, I would say a queen that is around 15mm would be the biggest but perhaps check the entrance size in the website to be sure. Thanks for watching
I have in 2022 Christmas one from my brothers dad and one form my dad (Side note 1 me getting 2 was a accident but I didn't complain side note 2 my brother from my mom's side don't share the same dad only the same mom if fact the only sibling that in the middle part with me is one of my older sisters.)
I do like the AC nests and equipment and I think they are exceptional. Tar Heel Ants products are also excellent IMO. I haven’t seen anything as well designed and high quality as AC and THA. THA setups have a more hand made (labor intensive) and slightly funky quality. AC setups are nicer looking and more modular… flexible and expandable. I’m really in awe of both AC and THA and what they have done to educate and entertain about ant keeping. I’m sure the cost of designing and producing the AC products is very expensive. I’ll bet the margins are very small. I doubt that Mikey Bustos is getting rich on the AC products. Like THA, I think AC is more a labor of love rather than greed.
Ah right, thanks for clarifying. I really like this nest I reviewed, very well made, clean finish. It was expensive for me to ship it here but that’s to be expected. Thanks for taking the time to comment. There are some great ant keeping products out there and making money is very hard. Lots of effort and design goes into most of them.
Great to see a in-depth unboxing of one of their products.
Thank you very much, I couldn’t see one that had been done before so I thought it was time
Nice video, I had gotten one of these about a year ago shipping was insane
Yeah it is, do you like the nest?
hello fellow ant keepers from Australia
👍🏼
I use one of these and like others say the shipping was a Killer. But I do like this nest. Easy to use and the ants seem to like it :D
Nice, thanks for the comment. Totally agree the shipping was expensive and that would stop me buying again I think. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏼
Great video, I got one of these a good while ago and had the same issue paying import fees making it cost double what I originally wanted. 👍🏻😀🐜🇬🇧
Yes it’s a bit of an issue and I think most of their sales would be USA only.

iv been buying big spiders and tarantula, do you think i should get into ants? they move around alot more than spiders

The tunnels between the chambers look pretty narrow, do you think a camponotus queen could fit through them?
Depends on the size of Camponotus. Smaller species would be fine but maybe large ones like Consobrinus or Nigriceps might struggle but you would be surprised what they fit through
@@NovoAnts mine fit but the queen had to make her abdomen go long and skiny it fit throw sum of the holes
Also there is a different antscanada nest designed for camponotus if that's a worry.

Thank you so much Im a big fan 😁
Ok will do thanks
Appreciate you taking the time to comment and watch the videos…lots more to come
Nice.
When (worker count) would you recommend moving a colony into a nest that size?
Depends on the size of the ant species but you would want to be close to half to 3/4 filling before transferring. Also you would want to take into account the growth speed of the species.
Nice video, personally I don’t like antscanada’s products bc they’re overpriced and marketed to new ant keepers who might think it’s a normal price.

I went to get one a few months back but yeah the shipping to uk was ridiculous
Yeah the freight is pricey, I think that puts lots off.

same... shipping cost is too high....
That’s funny because my shipping was really good
Excellent that’s good 👍🏼
Can someone please tell me how to stop the mold from forming in the hydration area.
Do you mean underneath? If so I put cotton in there and use bottled water. Then you can change it fairly easily
Does review on an ant stores nest
Gets sponsored by a rival ant store
Haha yep, just shows some healthy competition is ok. I don’t think they compete really, very different areas.
would a Formica Fusca queen fit through the fit the first 4 entrances?
Good question, how big are they? I’ll check the diameter of the entrance hole.
