@@firefly8471it’s not going anywhere! Disney Plus & all other streaming services are releasing exclusive content to DVD/Blu Ray! Say that last month! Walmart is a laughing stock! One Walmart we go to, the closest one is never stocked & only has one side of movies/shows! Another Walmart we go to about 20 miles further has two sides of the isle of movies/shows & is always stocked! It is also stocked with a better selection of older stuff! Found the original Dracula & Frankenstein sets at that location! It just really depends on how the store is run!

Streaming exclusives are getting DVD/Blu Ray releases now, saw that announcement last month! Best Buy is struggling & think cutting this out will slow the bleeding! Our local Best Buy knows where the majority of their business comes from & can’t understand why the movies are the ones getting canned! They know it’s going to be a huge blow! Remember that Best Buy had pulled this stunt in the late 2000’s along side Circuit City! The City went bye bye & Best Buy almost joined them!

I cannot believe I live in an America where censorship is not just accepted it is demanded by some of the population! It boggles my mind. But this is only a small reason why I still collect physical media. I love having books on my shelf (I will never read Ebooks), and vinyl and Cds, and movies (VHS to 4K). I am from the last generation that will collect these things. They have bred it out of society with the farce of streaming. Now, they can determine what You want/will watch via the algorithm. I do stream, but walking into my room and pulling a DVD or other and watching it is as much enjoyment as the film. Its the act that is almost gone from the West. But it was an integral part of my growing up. Just like grocery stores today getting rid of cashiers, I do not want to self checkout. I want a human being to ring me up. But we have left that world behind and for that Jesus Wept. Or wait, maybe I'm the one crying here...

As far as Best Buy is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if they close their doors period because, their business has drastically declined compared to when they've first opened. Every time I go to Best Buy, the store is practically empty, and with a handful of customers and only one checkout counter open. The issue is not only the movies, but it's the entire store in general. Best Buy is barely hanging on.

I don't think it will go away but I completely agree it will shrink for the non collectors, at least in the short term.
I personally think the streaming side of things will hit a critical mass here in the near future and cause a lot of people, possibly younger people, to reconsider physical media.
The constant changing of licensing rights, the increasing costs, and the push by streaming services to go back to ad based models will cause people to rethink streaming as the end all be all

I collect and stream as well. The problem is that the more niche it becomes the more the boutique labels are taking advantage of us. People never want to mention how much these companies overcharge and unfortunately a lot of collectors don’t have enough discipline and give them the ridiculous asking prices. It’s just going to get much worse now. The vinyl comparison doesn’t work for me. It went away for years and when it resurfaced these albums were also way overpriced but people payed anyways. I’m glad we have the options but at the same time I see more and more collectors taking a stand and finally saying that the hobby is just getting too expensive.
I’m sorry but a 4K release of an obscure 80s horror movie just isn’t worth $40. Especially as a blind buy for a movie that half the time wasn’t very good to begin with.

Best Buy discontinuing physical media was heartbreaking for me for sentimental reasons. I started getting into collecting 4K Blu-Rays in 2017. Like a mad man. And I would take my daughter (who was 1 and a half at the time) with me every Tuesday from 2017 to now, to get movies and other stuff for her.
There are still chains like Walmart and Meijers -- and even stores like Barnes & Noble -- but the latter of which horribly overprices their UHDs.

If it wasn't for ARROW, SHOUT, VINEGAR SYNDROM, SYNAPSE, VESTRON, MVD re-releasing these films I wouldn't be as committed to it. I want the Directors Cut of films, the special features, I hate leaving it up to streaming platforms to dictate what I watch and when. So they’re being prepped to have bigger sales for music and movies/TV’s. Physical media is dying I’d say within 5 years max most likely sooner all physical media will be online only. I've seen so many confident hot takes from people who aren't in the physical media game, those same people would be floored if they did research and found out about how bountiful the harvest has been for us. There have been too many high quality releases from too many companies. Physical media may not be mainstream anymore but it's thriving.

There isn’t anything to me that is close to signaling the death of physical media
Sales are down, as to be expected because with most luxuries. We are in a big economic depression. That said physical media is still thriving. Anyone who thinks it isn’t look at all the new releases that come out every Tuesday
Best Buy should get rid of their exclusives. All the steelbooks get is a Best Buy sticker....They don’t make the steels themselves. Another store will certainly slap their name on the steelbooks and take them up instead of Best Buy
Best Buy and target are department stores. As a business it makes sense for them to stop selling it. 95% of the selection is widely available on Disney plus or hbo max
This topic is getting tiring because people are freaking out about Best Buy and target getting rid of physical media. This is good. We don’t stores that sell SW, marvel movies and insanely mainstream titles that everyone has probably owned for quite some time
In terms of browsing movies, Best Buy hasn’t been fun to for me to browse since like 2013

I pretty much agree with everthing you said. The general massess arent buying physical media anymore, but collectors and enthusiasts have a smorgesboard of options these days. I think since 4k is catered to audiophiles/videophiles, the studios/botique labels know to put out a preimum product for the fans. I will miss the Best Buy exclusive steelbooks, however Walmart or Amazon will probably pick those up. Overall, yes disc sales are way down, but there will always be a market for collectors. Also the reason I prefer discs (4K) is the superior image (higher bit rate and HDR) and always superior uncompressed audio! Also no edited movies/shows and you REALLY OWN THE PRODUCT, NOT AT THE MERCY OF STREAMING SERVICES.

The reason that DVD and Blu-ray sales have declined in the past 5 to 10 years, is due to the Modern Entertainment industry making tons of shitty movies and tv shows. The quality has dropped to an all time low! Those of us that know better, aren't interested in 99% of the garbage that is put out.

  • @ridethesynthwave
    @ridethesynthwave 7 месяцев назад

For me it's not neccessarily the fear of physical media dying out completely. I know there will always be a market. What I fear is the obvious price increase as things continue to move towards a collectors only market. All formats will probably increase in price. Especially 4ks, and that is really the scary thing to me. Being priced out of a market I love would break my heart.
Also, things may not die out, but things will be harder to get. As you said, things sell out quickly, and as more companies drop out of the market, second hand sellers will be selling for butt loads ... I fear it may end up like the retro video game market, and at that point, it might as well be dead, cause most of us won't be able to afford it anymore.

lol You are right for collector's physical media isn't going anywhere. It feels impossible to even keep up with all the releases. But to the average person they just have like Netflix and barely pay attention to what they can and can't watch on said streaming platform. Or if it might disappear and head to a different streaming service, if it's even available to stream at all. That being said...I'd probably save a lot of money if I adapted that mindset of not collecting all these physical titles.

I don’t think it is dying. I think it is simply changing. We have Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, niche companies and other websites. When you look at that Halloween Trilogy 4K Steelbook that just came out, all the Paramount releases that just came out, and the Walmart Halloween section (including awesome Steelbooks), it’s definitely not dying. It is simply transitioning. It is going through a metamorphosis.
If it were dying, it would be like music cassette tapes. Now THAT is the definition of dead. 8 Track is the definition of dead.
Physical media cinema is not anywhere near dead. It is simply changing.

I still maintain that collecting has always been a niche market. Average people don't care about owning cds or dvds or blu-rays. Average people were impulse buyers before streaming. Those blockbuster titles and mega selling albums they bought were usually the quickest to find their way to used sellers and/or pawn shops as well.
Streaming being so mainstream now, the impulse buyers are mostly extinct now. I think stores failed to recognize that it's the collectors that do the bulk buying. By not rotating their inventory and then continuously slimming their selections, they effectively pushed collectors to go online.
So no, physical media isn't dying. In some sense, it's gone back to the way it was before the days of Best Buys and Walmarts. For music, you went to dedicated record stores. If they didn't have what you were looking for, they could order it for you. Or you did mail order from the back pages of Circus Magazine or Hit Parader.
    Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

You realize you can be in control of your own streaming service. At 2:21, you say you don't want to be reliant on other sources for your movies. Just take your physical media, rip them onto your pc, create a server and then you can stream your own stuff and you are in control. You can take your digital library wherever you go without having to lug around dvd's or dvd cases or whatever. Case solved.

In Spain is beyond ridiculous. Most stores barely keep a minimal section for movies. HOWEVER, they have a great section for records.
Really? What´s more likely to be true? That most people buy physical movies or records?
Besides, if space is an issue...again, what takes more space: DVDs/BDs/4Ks or records?
    Doesn´t make sense.
I think this has to be mandated so that stream services become THE thing. But people still buy physical movies. And if stores won´t sell them they will still be sold online.
Also, while many people are happy/willing to spend money on streaming services plenty others are not and/or have realized that companies either drop their content or edit them so they´ve started to get back into physical.

Yes and No is Not an Answer. FYI a Yes and a No cancels each other out.
Physical Media is Not Just DVDs and Blu-rays. It also includes CDs and Vinyl.
More than 10 years ago "Experts" declared the Death of Physical Media. They said if you want Physical Media you must buy it Now while you can. Next year might be too Late.
Guess what in the last 5 years all Physical Media sales have increased a lot.
Consumers, many don't like to buy online, where Physical Media sales are, Lost track of where they could buy Physical Media.
So when Retail Stores limited and stopped selling Physical Media Millions of people did Not know where to buy Physical Media.
People have figured out where to buy Physical Media and they are buying it.
Oppenheimer sold out all their 4K DVDs in one day. The studio is Quickly making more.
Studios have Not stopped putting their New Films on DVDs. Old Films are being put on DVD. Films and TV series that were Never released on DVDs are being released on DVDs.
Physical Media sales are a yearly Multi-Billon dollar worldwide industry.
The USA is a very small fraction of the world and of worldwide sales. Europe is more than twice the population of the USA. The decline in Physical Media sales was always much less there. In Asia Physical Media sales fell off the least.
Asia makes up roughly 60% of Physical Media sales. Asia Loves Physical Media.
People have realized that the Only Way to Be certain of being able to watch the content they want as the Artists made it, in the best possible Quality is by owning Physical Media.
With the near death of Cable TV, and all the New Pay Streaming Sites, people are turning back in a Big Way to Physical Media.
People don't want to pay the Cost for every streaming option. So the Movies, and TV Series they want to watch they are buying.
Physical Media is Not going anywhere. The True Numbers of people who Love Physical Media is Greatly under-reported. The Number is Many times more than anyone reports.

Best Buy hasn’t been making the best decisions lately. Physical media will survive for all the reasons you pointed out. Even if it becomes a niche market. Plus, physical stores are having a hard time making ends meet. Let’s focus instead on how well sales are online. Look at the LP. Who ever thought we’d see those things again?

The question should be whether physical media is NECESSARY. If the answer is yes, then it will be around as long as it is necessary. If the answer is no, then it likely is dying out, and will eventually become a niche/boutique market similar to LPs and limited release music and video discs. I would suspect that we're transitioning between those two answers right now, as the population adopts and adapts at varying rates. Personally, I have not made just a single CD purchase and a single BluRay purchase in the past ten years. I've ripped all of my old media and and happy without the clutter.

  • @rsolsjo

It's becoming niche. I live in the north of Sweden and physical media is pretty much dead here, but dead in stores, and has been for years upon years. Online you can still order it all you want. What we should worry about is quality control sinking so low these the discs are no longer worth buying.

I think Amazon will get rid of physical media the second the studios abandon releasing it. In Australia Disney no longer releases anything their last title was Guardians of the Galaxy 3 we didn't even get The Little Mermaid 2023 live action or the new beautiful 4K Snow White remaster. Amazon is a video streaming service too the second they can clear their warehouses to store something else that does sell they will. What's happening in Australia will happen in the US too just give it time.

I rarely stream. I want to be able to watch anything I want to watch WHEN EVER I want to watch it, because I'm a control freak.
Same with books. It's about OWNERSHIP of the content and to be honest...it infuriates me at how little control and ownership we have of anything anymore. My view is "You create and sell a product. I buy and OWN the product. THAT'S IT." you don't get to make me PAY MORE MONEY, you don't get to put a bunch of B.S restrictions. I bought it, it's mine now and that doesn't exist with streaming. So yes, it's all about control and ownership. I am a libertarian democratic socialist, after all. "Don't tread on me" doesn't just apply to the government. It applies to business, which often OWN the government. With physical media it's taking back that control of the content. It's giving power to the people. The audience. So for me, it's all about actually OWNING the content and being able to watch it or read it when ever you want, without interference.
"you really think we're that corrupt that something that's like a racy joke is gonna make us want to do this stuff on a daily basis?" Amen, amen, brother.
Of course the censor's argument against that would be "but there is a segment of our society." "YOUR INTELLIGENT. YOUR AN ADULT. YOUR NOT STUPID, CRAZY, EASILY INFLUENCED. Your not the type of person we're worried about."
Now to be fair, even as a child/teenager, teen comedies like Revenge of the nerds....some of the scenes in that film were very "What the f**k? That's messed up." and at the same time going "It's a f**king movie!!!!!" Like for instance, It's always sunny....in real life I would DESPISE these people. Absolutely despise them, but as a fictional TV show I love it. Why can't people just chuck their morality out the door and just watch and enjoy the damn movie?! I mean, there are a couple songs that I love, that I think are great songs, but I 100% disagree with the lyrics. THEY ARE STILL GOOD SONGS. I'll still give them a listen. But again, even as an 11, 12, 13 year old kid watching Revenge of the nerds, I was like "That's pretty messed up, but it's fun. It's a movie." Didn't corrupt me and I was a stupid easily influenced 12 year old.
Speaking in terms of how much content....I have like 30 books I have not read, and who knows how many films I have that I have not seen yet, or movies i've seen but only on VHS like Dead girls. All just waiting to be read/watched and it does feel overwhelming at times. Like "how the f**k am I gonna watch/read all these movies/books?" I'll read 10-12 books a year, but I'm also adding 10-20 books every year, and movies it's even worse. So it does feel overwhelming. This year, I didn't get too much. I tried to hold back.
Another thing is....despite the 2020's being a decade of anti intellectual curiosity, anti artistic expression, etc. There is still a flood of historical niche topics and true crime content. As I've complained before. I resent the mainstreaming of true crime, but it sure as hell has lead to more content. So despite the anti true crime bashing and anti intellectual curiosity there is still a ton of content and more options. So instead of "I got to buy one of these old books about the Tea pot dome scandal." Now it's like there are 4 new books on the tea pot dome scandal, lol. I'm always thrilled when I check online for new book releases and I'll see a new book about a topic I've been wanting more of or never thought was gonna get a book. Which is great and it gives me hope for the American IQ and state of the country. That at least there is still a portion of people who still give a f**k and want to be educated and get a thrill out of expanding their knowledge, no matter the topic. Someone can be really into hip hop, studying it, reading books, watching documentaries, etc. GOOD. I fully support that.
So ya, I absolutely agree with everything you said.
Also....I think A nightmare before Christmas can be a Halloween movie and or a Christmas movie, but for me it is purely a post Halloween Christmas movie. Which is why I only watch it as part of my Christmas movies. It would just feel weird to me watching in October, unless you like the idea of what the film is based off which is "Christmas dominating other holidays. Christmas arrives early every year" although in this case it's Halloween dominating Christmas, but that's because Christmas is so enticing and of course crass commercialism. But I prefer the "post Halloween" feel over the whole "Christmas comes earlier every year." That is one of the things I like about Christmas, it's post Halloween, Thanksgiving, and in my case post birthday since I was born in November. Just makes Christmas and New years eve a special unique time.

I agree with you on everything you said my friend. If you are a collector, you will have choices. I love my movies and started buying movies when VCR was a thing 😮. I regret that I threw almost all of them away when DVD 📀 came out. I learned from that and still have over 3k DVDs and now over seven hundred Blu-rays. When HD-dvd came out I jumped on that and collected about 200 before that format died. Now I have close to a hundred 4k and I have been buying the special collections since DVD. I slowed down only because of money issues. I still look for the coolest deals though. 👍😎
