I want to know what you thing about this aspect. I have indulged in similar flights of conjecture myself. The animistic conflation between spirits of land, stone, water, gods, the dead, and elves, faerie, "little people," etc., seems to be fairlyl not just in North and Northwestern Europe, but well beyond.

Thanks! Interesting similarities to finnish folklore. Sounds like it went through blender and formed in to same but different believes :D Here in Finland / Russia the top stones have been used to offer food for birds. For the double headed eagle to be exact (its in your logo at the beginning and thumbnail of this video). It carried the offerings for the spirits of the dead. We also have similar offerings (silver, cause it purifies the land and water) for the burried spirits. Originally here was one large cupmark for one village, that was the eye of the land. We poured milk for it to ask for healing. The small cupmarks were originally a writing system, that marked who was buried in the mount. These mounts were originally just for the leaders and shamans that were supposed to come back to the world. And they were burried head facing east. Common people were burried (head facing north so they can continue from this world) in family "garden" and offerings for them were made to the family tree that every family was growing. Bodies that were buried were not gods, but their salt (alchemy) stayed in the land until the spirit arrived back to it and was born again.

Another inspirational entry - thank you. Notes on Utesita; yes burial mounds were/are certainly a powerful spot on the proverbial and literal map to channel, source and embody knowledge/wisdom. However, would not consider it the common/norm for such seidr/shamanic practices. Ultimately a megin match is a pre-requisite i.e. the person sitting (in meditation) should ideally be a megin match tot he ancestor or at least close proximity. Ancestral respect is also of utmost importance i.e. 'self sacrifice' and usually ties of kin would be the standard offering. Not all people were honored a significant burial mound, so usually people communing with spirits/Alfr via a burial mound would be steeped in shamanic (seidr) tradition and good knowledge of runic lore. Hence more common means of Utesita would be retreating away from the 'hum' (noise) of everyday life and aligning yourself with your sacred tree/s (Yew being powerful/popular in Scandinavia) or rocks or other primal charged sites and using shamanic visualization/meditation techniques to 'journey' (initially discovering and then aligning to ones fölge) and discover new insight. Freyr, God of the Vanir and re-incarnate form as king of Svea/Swedes as you mention .... yes given the substantial advanced trade routes Sweden established especially to the east, he was one of the fav' pt's of worship/respect (given he was associated with mobile earthly wealth and fertility etc) although Thor and Odin were also praised. Deity worship was very much relative to one's kin and the leanings such wise. The Futhark (Younger or Elder likewise) and the relative associated runes were qualitatively measured relative to the communal, familial and individual needs and preference. Your story about the Mound Dwellers resemble the dutch stories of the 'witte wieven', the 'white ladies' who dwell in burial mounds. They can be dangerous if not respected, so no one is expected to go near the mounds after dark without stating your 'pure' intentions. They also appear as 'fog-like' beings in the forrests and near bogs. They sometimes appear as men. They are part of folklore especially in the province of Drenthe, but still are held in respect when people are walking through the ancient fields and forrests. I would think there would be many problems connected to this practice nowadays, in our era of constant migration/displacement, where most people no longer possess an ancestral land. I know that my ancestors are buried all over the place and I suppose that they can benefit the lands where they are buried, but I personally am no longer there to venerate them or to directly benefit from the blessings that they may bestow on that particular area. While I am settled now, not a single ancestor of mine is buried nearby. Perhaps one could broaden one's sense of veneration to the prominent families that retain a solid foothold on the land where one resides, once you choose an area in which to settle, even if those families are no direct kin to you? These families are clearly represented by the roads in my area that bear their names, for example, and in many cases historic buildings/dwellings, not to mention the names in the cemeteries (ancient cemeteries are scattered everywhere). I live in a rural area where there are many centennial farms still owned by the same families and the descendants of these founding families are still here and still bear their names. A pride in local history is extremely strong here. But in my case, veneration must rest upon veneration of the land itself. I can't point to any particular mound or gravestone, but must broaden my perspective to the overall community in which I now dwell.

They act as if they’re further from this land than I am, who, like you, has ancestors buried several thousands of miles away. I look further back in the land’s history to before the Europeans forced the 1493 Doctrine of Discovery Inter Caetera papal bull onto indigenous tribes, and keep these tribes in mind as I plant new trees and care for their land while I’m here. Their burial mounds are dug up and paved over for new parking lots before archaeologists can properly document them, all in the name of short-term profit. I give offerings to ancestors whose bodies used to be under a modern gazebo for their blessing of being temporary caretaker of the land that hosted their traditions and upon which so much of their blood was spilled. Their bodies may be gone, but their memory is still here. I purchased a set of state survey maps from an estate sale where descendants were selling the family farmland to developers; the mounds are marked on these maps long before existing trails were paved and given European names. @@imbasforosnai2392 I am happy to say that my town is a "Tree City USA," which is an Arbor Day program. That means we pass the criteria for both planting and maintaining our trees. As a member of our local garden club, I have helped plant rain and butterfly gardens and maintain all of the flora in our public areas. I co-founded our local community garden and served on its board for many years. We also work with similar clubs throughout our local area. I have watched our private wood mature in the past 20 years so that now there is no understory. I have sadly observed a loss of many bird species for some reason, such as wood thrush and woodpeckers. Not sure why this should be, with 100 acres of woodland for them to live in. As for climate change, the earth will abide, as it always has, despite cataclysms. The question is, will we, if we do not stop acting like spoiled adolescents and start treating our parent planet with the respect she deserves. Your efforts all sound so wonderful! I think the dead can become Magick beings, but not all Magick beings are dead humans. Especially the human and Magickal being hybrids famous through the globe. The lore, globally, clearly states all this...so I admire Arith, but in this I must disagree with the scope of his premise... He took the idea too far. I have second sight, I'm an animist, and I've seen a lot of shadow people and energy beings that aren't even remotely humanoid... Yea, I have been interested in Irish pre-christian belief for a very long time, and this association of mound, dead soul, elf somehow slipped right past me. This video does an excellent job of showing the relationship of ancestor worship with ethereal species, particularly through the way in which burial mounds are seen and treated by the living. For the Irish stuff, I have been blindsided by the solid work of Anthony Murphy, and can't wait for a popular publication from Dr. Jenny Butler. The thing I am looking for is the underlying elements left over from the Neolithic and before, the megalithic builders, and particularly their astronomy. For classical Greek stuff there are a couple great books by Florence and Kenneth Wood on the astronomical calendar, map making, and myth that, although demanding reads, do an excellent job. In any event, enjoy.

I have spent most of my life searching out burial mounds in Britain .... and have always loved sitting alone within them to connect with the spirits of the place .... strangely i always feel at home in them .....I have a passion for all ancient sites and am lucky that the British isles is full of them ... the one in the video is very beautiful !

I have my personal view about this. My theory is that several viking nobility and people went down into deeper and huge subterranean caves with capability to sustain life and vegetation with masses of fresh water and algae, fitoplanctum that generates oxygen and food that can mantain a population in this subterranean caverns within the earth. This theory is shared by an author who's name is Robert Sepehr, he is an antrophologist from california that is specialized in indo-european and aryan culture and populations. I strongly recomend you to read his book with a theme closely related about what i'm saying to you, his book is named: "Gods with amnesia, subterranean worlds of inner earth".

I have indulged in similar flights of conjecture myself. The animistic conflation between spirits of land, stone, water, gods, the dead, and elves, faerie, "little people," etc., seems to be fairlyl not just in North and Northwestern Europe, but well beyond.

Thanks! Interesting similarities to finnish folklore. Sounds like it went through blender and formed in to same but different believes :D Here in Finland / Russia the top stones have been used to offer food for birds. For the double headed eagle to be exact (its in your logo at the beginning and thumbnail of this video). It carried the offerings for the spirits of the dead. We also have similar offerings (silver, cause it purifies the land and water) for the burried spirits. Originally here was one large cupmark for one village, that was the eye of the land. We poured milk for it to ask for healing. The small cupmarks were originally a writing system, that marked who was buried in the mount. These mounts were originally just for the leaders and shamans that were supposed to come back to the world. And they were burried head facing east. Common people were burried (head facing north so they can continue from this world) in family "garden" and offerings for them were made to the family tree that every family was growing. Bodies that were buried were not gods, but their salt (alchemy) stayed in the land until the spirit arrived back to it and was born again.

Notes on Utesita; yes burial mounds were/are certainly a powerful spot on the proverbial and literal map to channel, source and embody knowledge/wisdom. However, would not consider it the common/norm for such seidr/shamanic practices. Ultimately a megin match is a pre-requisite i.e. the person sitting (in meditation) should ideally be a megin match tot he ancestor or at least close proximity. Ancestral respect is also of utmost importance i.e. 'self sacrifice' and usually ties of kin would be the standard offering. Not all people were honored a significant burial mound, so usually people communing with spirits/Alfr via a burial mound would be steeped in shamanic (seidr) tradition and good knowledge of runic lore.
Hence more common means of Utesita would be retreating away from the 'hum' (noise) of everyday life and aligning yourself with your sacred tree/s (Yew being powerful/popular in Scandinavia) or rocks or other primal charged sites and using shamanic visualization/meditation techniques to 'journey' (initially discovering and then aligning to ones
fölge) and discover new insight.
Freyr, God of the Vanir and re-incarnate form as king of Svea/Swedes as you mention .... yes given the substantial advanced trade routes Sweden established especially to the east, he was one of the fav' pt's of worship/respect (given he was associated with mobile earthly wealth and fertility etc) although Thor and Odin were also praised. Your story about the Mound Dwellers resemble the dutch stories of the 'witte wieven', the 'white ladies' who dwell in burial mounds. They can be dangerous if not respected, so no one is expected to go near the mounds after dark without stating your 'pure' intentions. They also appear as 'fog-like' beings in the forrests and near bogs. They sometimes appear as men. They are part of folklore especially in the province of Drenthe, but still are held in respect when people are walking through the ancient fields and forrests. You just feel that you are not alone there.

I would think there would be many problems connected to this practice nowadays, in our era of constant migration/displacement, where most people no longer possess an ancestral land. I know that my ancestors are buried all over the place and I suppose that they can benefit the lands where they are buried, but I personally am no longer there to venerate them or to directly benefit from the blessings that they may bestow on that particular area. While I am settled now, not a single ancestor of mine is buried nearby. Perhaps one could broaden one's sense of veneration to the prominent families that retain a solid foothold on the land where one resides, once you choose an area in which to settle, even if those families are no direct kin to you? These families are clearly represented by the roads in my area that bear their names, for example, and in many cases historic buildings/dwellings, not to mention the names in the cemeteries (ancient cemeteries are scattered everywhere). I live in a rural area where there are many centennial farms still owned by the same families and the descendants of these founding families are still here and still bear their names. A pride in local history is extremely strong here. But in my case, veneration must rest upon veneration of the land itself. I can't point to any particular mound or gravestone, but must broaden my perspective to the overall community in which I now dwell.

They act as if they’re further from this land than I am, who, like you, has ancestors buried several thousands of miles away. I look further back in the land’s history to before the Europeans forced the 1493 Doctrine of Discovery Inter Caetera papal bull onto indigenous tribes, and keep these tribes in mind as I plant new trees and care for their land while I’m here. Their burial mounds are dug up and paved over for new parking lots before archaeologists can properly document them, all in the name of short-term profit. I give offerings to ancestors whose bodies used to be under a modern gazebo for their blessing of being temporary caretaker of the land that hosted their traditions and upon which so much of their blood was spilled. Their bodies may be gone, but their memory is still here. I purchased a set of state survey maps from an estate sale where descendants were selling the family farmland to developers; the mounds are marked on these maps long before existing trails were paved and given European names. @@imbasforosnai2392 I am happy to say that my town is a "Tree City USA," which is an Arbor Day program. That means we pass the criteria for both planting and maintaining our trees. As a member of our local garden club, I have helped plant rain and butterfly gardens and maintain all of the flora in our public areas. I co-founded our local community garden and served on its board for many years. We also work with similar clubs throughout our local area. I have watched our private wood mature in the past 20 years so that now there is no understory. I have sadly observed a loss of many bird species for some reason, such as wood thrush and woodpeckers. Not sure why this should be, with 100 acres of woodland for them to live in. As for climate change, the earth will abide, as it always has, despite cataclysms. The question is, will we, if we do not stop acting like spoiled adolescents and start treating our parent planet with the respect she deserves. Your efforts all sound so wonderful! Yea, I have been interested in Irish pre-christian belief for a very long time, and this association of mound, dead soul, elf somehow slipped right past me. This video does an excellent job of showing the relationship of ancestor worship with ethereal species, particularly through the way in which burial mounds are seen and treated by the living. The thing I am looking for is the underlying elements left over from the Neolithic and before, the megalithic builders, and particularly their astronomy. For classical Greek stuff there are a couple great books by Florence and Kenneth Wood on the astronomical calendar, map making, and myth that, although demanding reads, do an excellent job. In any event, enjoy.
