    So many reviews trashing the DF. It's nice to see a very full and in depth review from someone who appreciates the style and function of this camera. I come from a film background and I love the look and design. Thanks for taking so much time to cover everything about the DF. It is expensive, but considering the D4 sensor and ability to use older manual Nikon lenses, which are usually a bargain now, makes the price very acceptable. I looked at your Flicker photos and the ISO shots are the best I've ever seen with ANY camera. Best review without a doubt available.

    Beautiful camera with a fantastic sensor. Priced a little steep but not completely out of my range. Looks like a fun camera to work with. Really makes the D610 look plastic and bubbly when shown side by side. Great review as always thank you.

    Awesome Review on the Df! it will be a huge success for those dedicated to still photography - its all about choices! The Df retro design functions will also have an impact on roll film users and to those who use manual lenses. Nikon have certainly covered their bases to secure a tight market that justifies the Df. I imagine their next cat out of the bag body to be very video orientated to keep the balance of their customers happy.

    If i really have the money, i would buy the silver chrome version in a heartbeat. As far as i'm concerned, apart from Pentax's K3, which DSLR on the market still offer chrome as an option ? This seems to be a really nice package. Hope the price will drop a little bit within a few months

    Thank you very much for your review of the Nikon Df.
    For me, the Nikon Df has that which I am looking for in a camera. I have the intention to at least hold one when it arrives in the shops I have access to.
    The people of Nikon provide and, for sure, are aware that this Nikon Df camera, is an alternative choice and I would be preaching to the converted in stating that other choices of cameras are on offer, by Nikon and otherwise which offer similar and additional specifications, at alternative price points. I already have a Nikon which has video specifications which I never use, so video for me, is only a possibility, a necessity it is not.
    What I do enjoy using, is manual focus lenses, and the ability to use the present aperture feeler for manual-focus lenses surely has my attention.

    I think one of the most telling points in this video are when you say that the Df is based on the D4, which I have heard many champions of the camera have said. Most of the detractors though think that the Df is more based upon the D600/610 and really apart from the sensor, they would be right. I think everyone was extremely excited when they first heard about the retro camera and I don't think that is really much of an issue. I think the bigger issue is the price and spec of the camera.
    The 16mp sensor of the D4 is great for low light but the reality is the 24mp sensor of the D610 is exceptional and almost matches the D4 in low light terms according to DXO mark and is better when it comes to dynamic range and colour depth.
    The video issue is just a marketing thing for me. Video doesn't take up a huge amount of space on a DSLR, it has never been an issue for me when shooting and really it doesn't add lots of buttons and menu's. The X1pro still has video and nobody seems to complain about that.
    I think the big bug bare for people though is the basic specs for the camera. 1/4000 maximum shutter speed, 1/200 flash sync speed (even though Nikon says 1/250, that means the D800 is 1/320 again a marketing thing). Build quality similar to the D7100 and D610, Nikons 39pt AF system, which is good but still a step down from the 51pt AF. For the price point Nikon should have had a similar specs as the much cheaper D7100 but with the full frame sensor.
    Now I am sure the Df will be a delight to shoot with but so is my D800, as was my D300 and D70s, all digital DSLR's and I would consider those all to be pure photography cameras.
    This camera could have been great, a redefining moment for Nikon, creating something that was soulful but instead instead we have a lack lustre effort designed to make as much money as possible.

    I love the retro look but I won't bite on this because you have to know that other manufacturers will be coming out with even more of these next year with full frame or at least APS-C that won't cost nearly as much. I expect even Nikon will release another retro style DSLR at a lower price point in a year or so.

    If one really need to shoot at super high ISO then I am obliged to think if the lighting situation warrant a shot in the first place. We shoot when we have light and that create textures, shadows silhouettes and generally create the atmosphere.
    Anything more than 4K demands the use of a better faster lens anyway.
    How many times would a majority of people shoot in super dark environment? Even so, can the camera focus without the use of AF assist light thereby alerting the subject which defeat the purpose of being a street camera in the first place?
    Certainly everyone's needs are different and so the questions are meant for one to think deeper: are you buying because of technical prowess or are you buying something that can be practically applied to everyday shooting without breaking the bank?
    the Df is now sold on two reasons - the old look with dials and/or for people who buys it just because of the D4 sensor. For my use, Df is either too fake or have specs that is over the top that made this camera expensive for everyday or even professional purposes.
    Nikon can sell this D4 little brother without the dials and make it cheaper. But they don't or won't which is the biggest pity as far as I am concerned.

    Well, using knobs on a digital camera is hardly new - just look at the Fujis, you have shutter speed, EC and aperture control (where it should be -- on the lens). I don't have any need for video, so that's good. I'm curious - did they leave out the image retouch features only used by the 19 people on the planet who don't have the editing software? I'm guessing not - even my D3X has those.
    I look at this as a D4 in a retro package, and for me, it works. Not perfect (I'm guessing the Dfx will allow for interchangeable focusing screens and an additional card slot), but I am not a hater of this camera.

    I think it's a fine addition to the Lineup. 2 of the Main features of this camera are things that I have been complaining about for the longest time. For those of you whining about the camera not having a video camera if you want one go buy one already! There are plenty of Bodies out there that have your precious video capability. This is one reason why last summer I bought a Nikon D3.. I don't want a video camera in my DSLR... again, if I want one I'll buy one. I paid $3800 for a pristine D3(not a big leap to a new D4). I also don't want any of those silly goofy scene modes either. it's a retro camera for a reason..

  • @jacobl6572

    I like a lot of things about the DF, the knobs are cool, but I also think it should have a pro body, all metal, not cheap plastic mix, also interchanging screens for the old lenses. No video is a plus for me since I never shoot assignments in video let alone know how to edit them, that's a whole other game for the consumer crowd. 2 card slots would have been much better.
    Why does size and weight override good features anyhow?
    Any real pro work you have to do, you will be lugging around more than the camera and a 55mm lens, I would think. Buy a D3200 for taking some shots while out having fun, not this $3000 + setup. Unless you have money to burn.
    Just what / who is this camers for?
    For me I keep asking myself, in doing a wedding and other work, do I want this camera with no vertical grip, a bit too small and ackward to use. I'll have to try it out to know for sure. I like my D300s size, feel and controls. I wish they made the D610 with a D800 body. I feel many are still wanting a true D700 replacement and not the extreme cameras we see like this.

  • @srobart

    Video is the future. It's getting easier and easier to share video. We are approaching the point in time where all "photography" will be done via video frame-grabs. What will happen is your camera will take a short burst of video at a high frame rate and then it will choose the best frame grabs, which will be presented to the photographer. We already see rudimentary systems like this in the Nikon 1 series and some smartphones. This will mean that we will never miss a moment again.
    Nikon's sales were down 48% this year, while Canon's were only down 20%. Nikon needs to pull its head out of its rear end and stop trying to step backwards. The world doesn't move backwards, despite how much some may prefer that. Nikon is either going to stop playing around and present a SERIOUS challenge to Canon in the video world, or it's going to go under. It's just that simple. I love my Nikon cameras, I use them on a daily basis, but Nikon is still several generations behind Canon in terms of HDSLRs and they're falling even further behind now that Canon has released their Cinema series, which will give them vital experience to make even better DSLRs/HDSLRs.
    I believe that the DF will go down as one of the biggest failures in Nikon's history...and they simply cannot AFFORD to release failures right now, if they intend to remain a viable company.

    I heard it said since we did not get a true D700 & D300s replacements, we do not want this odd ball. It is odd that these two huge selling, loved cameras were left just get old and die.
    I like a lot of things about the DF, the knobs are cool, but I also think it should have a pro rated body, all metal, not cheaper plastic mix, also interchanging screens for the old lenses. No video is a plus for me since I never shoot assignments in video let alone know how to edit them, that's a whole other game for the consumer crowd. thats wants everything loaded. But 2 card slots would have been better.
    Why does size and weight override good features anyhow?
    The dynamic range is better than the D800 after 300 ISO also color depth does not drop so fast either. see DxoMark charts. So it is very good, not doing the trypod F8 control shots as we see in so many stats, but out in the field in the wind, action, lower light, and being able to shoot smaller with apertures and
    saving the flash from full dumps, shooting higher ISO's. I will have to try it myself to see it I would want it over the D800.

    Just don't get it. If you like to use the front and back wheel then why get a camera that has dials? Might as well just get the way cheaper D610 to do just that. Hence in the end, it is selling on style more than substance.
    If it do help, just to mirrorless straight instead would be better.

    • @kocici_tata
      @kocici_tata 11 лет назад

      Yannick Morand Since when does D4 have better low light performance than D600/D610? They perform exactly the same. The only camera performing slightly better is the D3S. The Df isn't gonna top any of them.

    • @srobart
      @srobart 11 лет назад +1

      Petr Brodík The D4's low light performance is legendary. The thing can literally see in the dark. The D600/610 isn't even in the same ballpark when it comes to low light and high iso performance. If I remember correctly, the D4 goes up over 102,000 ISO. Philip Bloom did a D4/D800 test where he set the cameras up in a dark pub and ran up through the ISO for video. I was quite shocked at how well the D4 could see in such a low light environment. He actually had to start stopping down at higher ISOs because the camera picked up so much light at the higher sensitivities. The D600/610, in comparison, falls on its face by 25,600 ISO, producing images that are only useable in the most emergent situation.
      That being said, I have no way of knowing whether the DF is going to have that kind of performance or not, so I'm not saying you're incorrect. However, if it is the same system as in the D4, the DF will be a low light monster.

    looks good and I am sure IQ great. I just don't think it will do well - To costly for average consumer - Pro Users will still use their DSLR as with the FF lenses they need a better grip due to size and weight. No video. Beginners will get lost in old style dials and no Auto modes -
    So only a small group of Purists or more advanced users with money will buy -
    I think the Fuji XE2 is a better option for Purists - much cheaper
    I like Nikon but this will be flop in sales -

  • @castieldiallo2945

    I agree with Mr Wong. It seems to be a posers camera. For a few hundred pounds more you can pick up a more rugged and superior image quality of the D800. I think Nikon were trying to use up the surplus D4 sensors they had. I dont this will be a success. Umm, FLOP !

  • @Stormwatch153

    Funny and completely useless camera in 2013-2014, except for the people who doesn't know what to do with the excess of money....with the old AF, no Wi-Fi, no Gps, no Video which actually keeps the DSLR market alive, old battery sporting the entry level models, no second card slot, SD card goes into the same compartment with the battery, no manual aperture control for the old lenses, no pentaprism, funny, cheaply painted silver ring around the "new" 50mm lens...for 3000+ Euro it should do 7fps, 20mpix, 4k video, 1/8000 shutter speed....MAN! Quatsch!

    • @km6xz
      @km6xz 11 лет назад +1

      First off, most of your comments are wrong concerning features. Second, there is a sizable group of still shooters who prefer not having video compromises. It is not for everyone, video shooters have 100s of options, all are compromised since the DSLR formfactor is not optimum for video shooting.
      This looks very interesting for my event shooting as a companion to my D800. Missing the grip is the only downside I can think of for still work.
      You have misread the market, the people the DF is aimed at, the camera features and functional video production cameras so slagging the DF does not mean very much...

    • @Stormwatch153
      @Stormwatch153 11 лет назад

      km6xz Sorry, but you really don't know what are you talking about, what compromise did Video make in DSLR cameras, did you pure photographers lost something in the photo section because of the video? It's ridiculous, and in order to shoot proper video with the DSLR you still need a rig, a proper rig. So, we need video in the DSLR's because it's superb, and those two worlds are joined together for the first time, not in the Sony or Canon, but in the Nikon camera. So please, 70's and 80's are long gone. It's 2013-2014 and cameras should follow times forward, not backward.

      Well, in my line of work this camera would do just fine.
      I have absolutely no use for Wi-FI, GPS or video (video i COULD put to use, but i do so extremely seldom). If the SD card goes into a separate compartment or not doesn't really bother me.
      I don't se any reason to hate a camera that much (you're not alone in your opinion).No one is forcing you to go buy one.
      Like I said, the camera would do fine in my line of work. I really only have two problems with it:
      1. It's a bit to big for my taste
      2. It is ridiculously overpriced at the moment.

    • @ebull666

      Umm it looks nice, lightweight for full frame camera. It has direct control and visual feedback for Shutter speed, Exposure comp, ISO, and with the right lens , eg Zeiss Milvus 35nn f/2.0 - Aperture.
      And it takes photos with D4 sensor. So plenty useful to me . I agree though would not pay 3000 euro. I got mine for 1500 Euro recently.
