In my view, they wanted to use his "hedgehog" side as a base to his character, and they did a great job with that in the classic games. I think they were aiming to go for the "cute but angry" thing so they could appeal to the kawaii culture of Japan and the "Cool 90's Attitude™" of the USA, and a mix of the goofyness associated with cartoons and antropomorphic characters all over the world. It's about the contrast of him being cute, but spiky... friendly and righteous, but fast and dangerous. All about the choice of animal, to the design and inspiration of Sonic is great, and that's why imo the best interpretations of him are the ones that balance those aspects with care and use stylization to make it work.

I just wanted to show that they seem to lean a little bit more towards the cute side as the very first frame indicates that, while some people seemingly want him to cut that cuteness out and only be cool and edgy. That's just how I see it as they were split on how to show sonic between Japan and us too so there's that
I don't wanna hate and i love ur sonic cd video and i also agree with the thumbnail but what i was trynna say was that like sonic being impatient wasn't intentionally supposed to be cute or cool. It was supposed to be charming. But i do understand why people find his charm cute. He's smol and cuddly in the early games so when he tries to be charming he could be seen as cute.

Japanese sonic looks so cute and adorable I never really liked the USA design. Sonic’s sprites were adorable in 1 and CD&2 (the animation scenes in CD cutscenes were soooo cuuuteee I also liked Amy’s cuteness, plus the secrets in sound test). I love chibi sonic and sonic’s cute lil face the yes sound effect is also great. The USA sonic looks like a rebellious teen. Japanese sonic ACTUALLY looks like the adorable sonic we all know. Sega of Japan did a better job with sonic and his games plus the soundtrack
