  • NAVAL BATTLES THAT NEVER HAPPENED
    Today we're looking at a clash between HMS Thunderchild, the warship from H.G. Well's "War of the Worlds," and the German battleship SMS Kaiser Friedrich III.
    The battle was simulated using Dawn of the Battleship by the Admiralty Trilogy.
    Thank you again to Drachinifel for allowing me to test out his ship design. Go check out his channel where he examines warships and naval battles throughout history:

    One minute I was in my local public house, showing off to shipmates my funny hat, when this Prussian geezer takes offense - next minute he threatens to blow us all up along with the boozer with his ship, I mean Prussians can be so uptight - so we decided to sort him out with an ole' ironclad we had lying around the harbour! XD lol

    Everyone knows thunderchild would win, it blew up 3 tripods before being ganged up on.

    I feel like thunder-child would have older steel armor compared to the Kaiser Fredrick’s krupp steel which would dictate that the Kaiser Fredrick should have better survivability

    • @canastaten
      @canastaten  Год назад +4

      Despite the Krupp steel, they both have similar armor stats in the game system. I based the armor on the Thunderchild off HMS Victoria, which had very thick older armor. Kaiser Frederick's armor was thinner and lighter but offered about the same level of protection. In both cases their main guns could penetrate the opposing ship's armor without much trouble.

      HMS Thunder Child didn't need additional armour, all it needed was the absolute steel balls it had to charge at 3 tripods

    My grandfather kept his Ex-RN Pinnace at the Heybridge basin, moored near The Jolly Sailor sadly all we have now is the clock as being made of wood it was destroyed in the great east coast flood of 1953.

    Fun video, not sure a torpedo of the time would make 30kts

    • @canastaten
      @canastaten  3 года назад +5

      Thank you. According to the data annexes for the game, the RGF 18in Mk.III torpedo could make 30 knots, had a range of 800 yards and was introduced in 1892. This data lines up with what I can find online, so I'm fairly certain that it's correct.

    thunderchild is an ironclad torpedo ram of the royal navy she was destroyed by the martian tripods

      Yep, and took 2 confirmed and a third probable fighting machine down.... After all the invader fighting machines lost to the royal artillery (as shown in the book), Frankly Thunderchild was the last straw.

      Wasn't the high sea fleet further from shore?
      and Thunderchild alone came in and saved the steamer?

    • @glenchapman3899
      @glenchapman3899 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@farmerned6 She was in shore just beyond the line of ships loading refugees. The High Seas fleet was German (Didn't exist yet) The British ships would have belonged to the Channel Fleet. Back then the big guns on ships had pretty short range, so for that squadron to come in close enough to try and be effective would have been difficult because of their size. Thunderchild was so successful because of her speed. She basically surprised the Martians.

    It’s a well known fact in the Andrew that the absolute panicle of naval combat is to ram the enemy! Hence the current RN being chronically depressed due to the fact that you’ve sod all chance of even seeing the enemy in the missile age. During operation pedestal HMS Wolverine rammed Italian sub Dagabur ….. for no good reason!! Perfectly good guns on the ship but no! Rammed the sub. Sank it. Buggered the destroyer of course in one of the most vital operations of the war so wolverine had to go back to Gib for repair. It’s captain?? Cashiered? ? Became an Admiral. (Not like right afterwards but you get the point!)

    What about the German torpedoes?

    • @canastaten
      @canastaten  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah that's a good point, the Germans would have had 2 tubes in arc. They'd have to prep the torpedoes a couple minutes ahead of time, which is feasible. But since each tube is a single attack and the target aspect would be narrow, the chance of each hitting would be somewhere around 3-5%. Still, it's something.
