Believe me or not, I've watched that movie 30 years ago exactly, when I was a French student in Birmingham, England.
We've watched it with flatmates, we were a dozen, videotape, and I've loved that movie right from the start.
This growing friendship during a roadmovie is so brilliant, I like Louise being dominant in the relationship, taking care of Thelma, and then it's just the opposite.
I notice now, with my maturity, how avant-garde this movie was.
One of the first feminist movie, if not the first one, but a subtle one, very moving.
The end is just perfect as u said and has become iconic. Now, it belongs to seventh art legend, forever...
Brad have said how much he appreciated the 2 ladies for giving him his first big break in his career! 😂.
Susan Sarandon’s acting had layers and layers. She’s sooooo good!!!!!

We studied this script in a screenwriting class I was in back in '92. The female screenwriter wrote the script on spec as it was not only her first screenplay, but her first time sitting down to write one. Calli Khouri basically banged out the entire script over a weekend in a motel just burning the midnight oil. Her first draft pretty much is the final shooting script. It's one of those miraculous beginner's luck stroke of genius inspiration meets crazy determination meets at the end of the weekend, she produced Lady McBeth. Only her Lady McBeth had a ride or die bestie with her riding shotgun. But, analyzing the screenplay line by line, the movie that was shot was all there on the page. Calli came out the gate Shakespeare, but less incesty with zero Oedipus complex messaging.
She got a lot of heat in the press and some backlash in certain circles accusing her of writing a propaganda film to male bash and premote vigilante justice. It was all hyperbole and superficial surface level bs of the media and political pundits using this cinematic masterpiece that made escapist entertainment high art and the tabloid police just saw it as an opportunity to take cheap lazy shots at Hollywood that missed the point entirely. This was a real life Cinderella story of a woman who wanted to write the movie she wanted to see and kind of story where the females were the ones driving the story and men were the girlfriends and wives being supporting players helping our main protagonists propel forward in their own story to achieving their goals, not the other way around. Which was and is the majority of cinema being a gentleman's club and occasionally the movie equivalent of ladies night will come out once every four times five years for the supposed non existent female audience and said female based movie becomes an insane runaway blockbuster smash. And Hollywood treats it as a niche marketing fluke that is a obe time only success oddity and they don't capitalize on the underserved demographic and tons of potential revenue left on the table. It happened with Thelma and Louise. It happened with The First Wives Club. It happened with Erin Brocavich. It happened with Mean Girls. It happened with Easy A. It happened with Bridesmaids. It keeps on happening and the misogyny boys club keep treating each latest woman's picture smash hit as an unprecedented fluke of fate never to be duplicated again so don't jump on the bandwagon to make their own knick off version. The industry that does nothing but chase trends and copycat whatever's hot at the moment doesn't do what's in their corporate DNA and commercial sensibilities base settings are programmed to. The Hollywood just for men seemingly projected vibe they cultivate by such non action would seem to suggest that men in power are have a serious female led movie blind spot. Sex And The City was a woman's group gathering cultural event when the big screen version hit theatres. The Hunger Games was a four film mega franchise. Twilight was a five film excuse to print money. Wonder Woman got her own stand alone movie and it should've cured sexism it was so good.
My point is back in '92, Thelma and Louise as a moment. A very big thunderclap of a moment. It immediately was in the zeighest for months. The film opened with great business and like our phenomenal two leads and their impressive gams, this movie had legs. (sorry.) Gina and Susan were on the cover of Time magazine. They both got nominated. The screenplay got nominated. It introduced us officially to a little known experimental indie method actor I believe whose name was Bradford Pittston. No. He shortened it. Brad Pitt. That's it. He's an obscure footnote in the anals of cinema history for the role he plays here. No, wait. He became the biggest actor on the face of the planet after this.
SPOILER Me and my bros came out of this film opening night buzzing about the masterwork we'd just seen, but kept repeating all of Brad's character's lines, all of us saying how cool JD was, even though it's his betrayal and thievery that ultimately sets in motion our anti heroines doomed decent into a wide open black void, sealing their fate. We kept calling him JD because Brad Pitt wasn't Brad Pitt yet. This was the movie that changed that.
Anyway, the final thought to leave on is how charming Calli's script truly is in just screenplay form. There is one moment in particular that was a really nice little detail and poetic touch that has always stayed with me. The moment is in the finished movie. Our girls are on the run from the inevitable long arm of the law. Louise is driving asking Thelma how much money they got. Thelma is sweating profusely. She rolls down her window as she pulls out all the cash in her purse to count it against the incoming breeze of the Texas heat. Thelma counts off to herself the bill amount. She only has three bills. She counts off anyway. Twenty. Forty. Sixty. Suddenly, the jet stream gust of wind from her opened window blows one of the bills away into the open road never to be seen again. Thelma sheepishly looks back at Louise who is too deep in thought to notice. Louise looks out at the road that claimed one of her bills. Then resumes as business as usual again. She recounts out loud again. Forty.
Then the script narrative ever so slyly adds to this little piece of grand human comedy and tragedy. The script description states matter of factly: Thelma never was good with money.
That's just straight up Callie being The Bard, extra cheeky and a total and absolute Boss.
That's CRAZY that it was her first screenplay and she wrote it all that fast!!
I don't necessarily see this movie as male bashing. There are good men and bad men in this. That's what I like about it. Some people may see it as feminist propaganda at first glance but the truth is, all of what happened to them were their own faults. Aside from the assault. But like, after that. All of the trouble they got into was the fault of their own actions stemming from their own victim/oppressed mindset. They could have gotten away from Harlem or whatever his name was. As Louise was saying, they got away. They were walking away. They could have gone and turned him in. Even after she shot him, they could have gone to the police right away and left out the part that they had gotten away LOL. Not saying lying is great but just for the sake of argument, he was facing them. It's not like they shot him in his back. They could have said they were getting away and then he came at them again. boom. self defense. But the point is that they created a self-fulfilling prophesy out of their own delusions of oppression that they ruined their lives. They believed the cops wouldn't believe them. Well we as viewers see that the detective was actually a very reasonable guy who clearly cared about them and would have believed what happened to them. But they didn't give him a chance. They decided they would never be believed because the world was so against them, so they made decision after decision that ruined their lives. Thelma was not intelligent at all. She was a victim to her own stupidity. The world is a dangerous place. Not just for women, but for anyone who doesn't use their brains, realize the world isn't perfect, and act accordingly. You can't be a moron and then blame the world for not keeping you safe. That's not some unfair thing towards women, men go through that too. The assault is the only thing that is truthfully something women struggle with more than men. And instead of moving forward from there in a smart way that was in their best interests, they made things worse and worse. If you aren't putting your best interest first you can't expect the world to. Anyway, all that to say, I don't see this movie as a feminist, man hating thing. Aside from the assault everything that happened to them was their own faults and they were definitely not victims to anything but their own stupidity lol. If anything, it shows how irrational and impulsive women can be. If thelma was so unhappy she could have just left her husband. But no.... she had to become a psycho and ruin her life then end it. LOL. For me, this movie had a lot of foreshadowing for modern feminism. Women making themselves out to be victims in their own minds and making their lives worse in the process. Thinking their the only ones with issues and that the world is against them, and allowing that mindset to justify their terrible behavior. Again, Thelma could have left her husband if she was so unhappy but instead she went out and made dumbass mistakes with strange men she knew nothing about, acting like a moron, sleeping with a total stranger who literally told her he was a robber, putting the chance at feeling good for one night ahead of her own safety and integrity. Ya, I just think this movie wasn't exactly pro women and anti man. Which is why I liked it. The characters weren't perfect. Far from it. They were believable though. Except Earl. Awful, unrealistic character. But like you said, the point is that the women were the main characters for better or worse. THEY drove the story.
It's so crazy to know that Brad Pitt wasn't a known name when this came out. He was such a baby in this! lol
I loved that part lol! When that 20 dollar bill gets blown away! So funny lol.
This was definitely a masterpiece. The score and cinematography really sealed the deal for me as well as the directing. Especially in moments where the leading ladies acting was so subtle and so powerful. That scene where they're driving and it keeps shifting from one to the other, and you see all the emotions and thoughts they're going through on their faces. They both coming to the resolve that things are bad, but they've never been happier. The subtle facial acting was tremendous. Probably was my favorite part of the movie.
Also... in the hands of a master craftsperson... Ridley Scott.

Great movie. Fantastic reaction. I can imagine Kelsea and Mercedes driving cross-country in a 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible. Sounds like a fun bucket-list must-do, though I reckon a lovely Mercedes would be more reliable and sensible than a both the Ford and Thelma. 😁
Thelma was a nightmare. 🤣 All I can say is Mersades would never be that clueless and naive - or stupid with money!! 🤣 We'd absolutely get safely to Mexico.

I can't blame Thelma for being naive and wanting male attention. She said she had never been out of that town without her husband. Obviously very sheltered. And I'm glad she got properly laid once before she died. Louise is the best friend every woman needs in her life.
I mean... It would have been better if she DIDN'T get herself dead. 🤣 Wanting male attention, especially from strangers, definitely isn't admirable. And I think getting taken advantage of kinda cancels out the "good sex" thing. But Louise is DEFINITELY the best friend anyone could ask for!!!

Epic movie. I agree that Thelma inviting Brad Pitt to ride with them was hard to understand. And I agree on the Earl character being too stereotypical. But you have to cut the writers some slack given it has some comedic components.
in many ways this is the female version of deliverance (1972). another must see film. thanks for watching this wonderful film.
When Geena Davis found out that Scott is trying to find a body double for her, to film that sex scene with Brad Pitt, she told him not to bother, she'll just do it herself.
Matchstick Men is another favorite Ridley Scott movie.

The lovely ladies give us the story of women being subservient to men. Thelma and Louise is one of the greatest classics of all time.
And to think most studios passed on this script back then.
First of all let me just say I'm very sorry you went through that and thank you for being open about your assault.
One of the main reasons why I'm against the showing of rape scenes in media; besides the fact that they're just horrible; it's also the fact that they can re-trigger victims and survivors, I honestly think they're just plain unnecessary at this point and there are better non-exploitative ways to deal with the subject matter on screen.
That being said another film that is of a similar vain (in my opinion) is Set It Off (1996), it deals with the same subject of women being fucked over by society and committing crimes together, it also has a strong message of female friendship and sisterhood.
I haven't seen that many reactions to it as it seems to be mostly ignored by the reactor community, but it's a good film nonetheless☺👍.

So i just watched a movie last night called "Fall". Thriller movie. New from 2023. First movie i have ever watched that utterly made my hands and feet wet from fear/tension. Hated every second of the movie but loved it all the same! Weird huh!??!?
The one with the girls climbing the tower??? SCARIEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN LOL. Seriously when people ask me what the scariest movie I've seen is I say it's a tie between Fall and Gravity with Sandra Bullock. I have a really bad fear of heights and of the idea of being untethered in space and those movies play off my fears just a little too well lol.

Great reaction. It's so good to see this film being appreciated. It's a great feminist character piece, and it's depressing to see reactors being sniffy about it. Another film about female friendship I think you'd like is "Frances Ha".
It's a fantastic movie. I don't really see it as being very effective when framed as a feminist piece but I don't think it needs to be framed that way. It's a great movie all on its own merit! I loved it!
@@KelseasComments well I meant feminist in broadest sense - it depends on how you interpret that term. I mean it merely as a description of a female empowerment.... a film about women and their friendships.
@domcoke it's definitely a film about two female friends. I just don't necessarily see it as empowering when I break it down I guess. I mean, it's such a fun and heartfelt movie but at the end of the day, it's about 2 women that allow a tragedy to define them, drive them to make stupid decisions, and eventually delete themselves. They basically decide there's no hope for them after killing a rapist and then do everything they can to make sure that they're right. They threw their lives away because of something a horrible man did. They ultimately allowed him to ruin and end their lives because they just spiralled into one stupid decision after another. I mean I absolutely loved the movie and it's such a fun film and iconic for having female leads at that time and all that, I just hesitate to call it female empowerment lol. But it's so fun having a female lead outlaw movie and I don't mean any of that to sound like I didn't love it lol.

@@WheresWaldo05 I used to be terrified of guns (like back when it happened). I would love to take some training and safety courses and conceal carry now! I've been talking about it for a couple of years but haven't actually done it yet. I live in California so I'm not sure how easy it is to get. But ya I've thought about it and want to eventually! Just haven't actually done the research on how to yet.
@@KelseasComments Not sure what the laws are for Cali. I know Cali has strict gun laws. Specifically for non pistol types i think. But even if you get the carry and conceal permit, make sure you thoroughly read and understand where you can and cannot carry! Schools, federal buildings, etc are no no's.
Once you get a full understanding of guns you will see they are not scary. And if you know how to break them down (take them apart- which is actually very easy), learn to clean them, see how the parts function, and practice with someone who fully knows how to safely use guns as well, you will be well on your way to being as comfortable using one as you would using any other tool.
I am going to give you a few pistol recommendations. Obviously if you find something that better serves you and your needs go with that, but this is a good starting point aimed at women. Watch videos on them all. And if there are indoor ranges where you can rent different models and try them do that for sure before buying. Price points will be relatively solid. Will be giving good brands as well that make quality products.
The walther would be my number one choice for you. Much easier for women to pull the slide back and rack a round into the chamber. And holding it in hand just feels Amazing and comfortable as heck.
