  • In this episode of Krome Cast, Tech IT Out, we provide an in-depth guide and demonstration of how to migrate from VMware to Hyper-V using System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM).
This episode featuring Krome's Commercial Director Sam Mager and Technical Ben Randall, explores the technical considerations required when embarking on a VMware migration to Hyper-V project, and shows two demonstrations of the migration process from VMware to Hyper-V using SCVMM.
The first VMware migration demo shows how to migrate a virtual machine running Windows Server 2016 and the second demo shows the migration of a virtual machine running Windows Server 2022. Note that the steps for migrating from Windows Server 2016 and 2019 are essentially the same.
From setting up virtual switches in VMware to initiating and monitoring the migration process in SCVMM, we provide detailed insights into every stage of the migration process. Additionally, we explore alternative migration methods, such as using Veeam for seamless backups and restoration directly into Hyper-V, offering flexibility for different environments.
Our discussion extends to the preparatory work required for SCVMM installation, including prerequisites, SQL Server setup, and the importance of updating to SCVMM Update 2 for enhanced performance.
If you're upgrading from VMware to Hyper-V and seeking to optimise your migration strategy, this guide equips you with the knowledge and best practices needed for a successful transition.

excellent video. I've been doing this at my work recently. Some things I've ran into are the esx hosts having to use the local root accounts for run as or the conversion would fail immediately and also the tool apparently only looks at local drive storage for host placement rating. I had to create a separate large drive on one hyper-v host to convert a large sql box cause the local c: drive wasn't big enough. Such an odd issue. Once you get past the host screen you select the clustered storage on the next step like normal. Hope they fix that in an update soon.

Thank you for your feedback! We're glad our video was helpful to you. Thank you for sharing your experiences and workarounds; your insights shed light on important considerations that others may encounter in similar scenarios. We haven't encountered any permissions problems, and the servers we used were fairly well specified for storage, but we will be vigilant and provide an update if we run into this limitation. Thanks again for watching, and best of luck with your migrations, if you need any help or advice, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks guys - I'm working on a VMWare to Azure Stack HCI POC and will likely use SCVMM to migrate VMs... good to see it in action!

Can we convert linux vm from VMware to hyper v infrastructure by scvmm 2019 or 2022?

    Hi Team
We are trying same but facing error 12703, vmm can't establish trust for SSL/TLS secure channel.
Install the certificate to trusted root store of vmm management server.

Thanks for your interest and feedback, it is great to hear that you enjoy our video format. We decided not to do the 2008 migration because Server 2008 has been out of support since Jan 2020, but we would be happy to assist you with a migration to a supported version of Windows Server. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you require any help or advice.
