- Athena finds not one, but two of the rarest Star Cars in the world, the Ecto-1 (aka Ectomobile). Based off a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado ambulance, Ecto-1 starred alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson in the Ghostbusters franchise. The car made appearances in both feature films, The Real Ghostbusters animated series, comics, and video games. Athena talked with the replica owners about the highs and lows of owning such an old car, fired up the proton packs, and even got an inside look at original production drawings of alternate vehicles.

Wow two very beautiful cars! The proton packs and folding rooftop gadgets were impressive too.
I've seen and sat in both of these beautiful Ectos and they so cool. Brian and I have been pals for a few years and we finally met in person at Fan Fest 2019 and I met Sean at an event in Burbank in like 2014/2015. Both great guys.
Obviously you've herd that Brian had sold his Ecto on Barrett Jackson?

Technically it was called the Ectomobile originally with Ecto-1 just being the licence plate. I am pretty sure it was the Real Ghostbusters cartoon that started referred to her as Ecto-1 with the Ecto-2 being a helicopter.

😂 Because after seeing Ghostbusters, I promise you'll never think of Cadillac the same way again!🤣 But like in the video, these cars (the commercial chassis) wern't entirely made by Caddy. The 2 other coach builders not mentioned in this video are S&S (also called Hess and Eisenhardt) and Eureka, with Eurekas being the rarest out of all the cars on the commercial chassis for the '59 model year

I remember trying to convert my Ecto 1 toy into the Ecto 1A from GBII. I had little strips of black and yellow paper that I tried to stick over the roof line of the doors! Well I was 9 years old - okay!!!

That's because alot of people call it the Ghostbusters car. Casual watchers or people outside of the GB fandom don't know it's called Ecto-1 or the Ectomobile. Honestly I have a feeling that the car doesn't seem to have an official name🤔

There are some videos on youtube showing how to make your own ecto cooler. I've tried a couple and the taste is spot on.

I think if I owned one of these beauties, I would put in a modern engine so problems like these two have would be avoided
Already tried that. Didn't work. Saw one other Ecto owner do it, had bad results. The problem isn't the 390 engine itself, it's the electrical issues between a more modern coil/distributor setup and the dual batteries on the isolator. Put in a different engine and now you've got all new problems with the torque and gear ratios never intended for this specific car. Putting in a different engine is all easy on paper, but when you actually try it, it's not that simple.

With all those electric draws, lights and all the electronics, I wonder how many batteries he has in it. I saw just the one, there is no way hes running all that off a normal 12 volt battery.
Both cars are each running 2 RV/marine batteries, both have a 135 amp alternator connected to a battery isolator. Even then, when the two 110v power inverters are turned on ( 1 x 400 watt, 1 x 1000 watt ) the second battery goes down pretty fast. Turn on all devices including the lightbars and you're pretty much done in about 30 seconds. Since the Superior isn't using the third pulley for an old style A/C pump it has been considered to install a second alternator.

In that one scene you can see me connecting jumper cables to one battery, but what you don't see is the other side of the car where there's a second tray w/ battery. The video didn't go into what we did to the engine area much. The radiator had it's transmission cooler blocked off and ran to an intercooler so we didn't have any more issues with rupturing. Big 8 gauge cables running the batteries together, electronic ignition, etc. I made some of the same mods to Sean's car to improve reliability. Also if we're at an indoor car show and have to disconnect batteries I've got a 110v hookup on the heartboard that allows me to plug the car into the wall and run everything but the lightbars. ( Not enough current on the 110v-to-12v passthrough device. )
Oh wow your the owner then? Thats awesome. Thanks for sharing this info and this great car from my childhood. Brings back memories of my cousin and I playing with all the toys they sold back then. He had the Station house and the Ecto 1 Mobile with all the figures. Great times. BTW Im thinking of building a scale model kit of this. Might you have any reference photos in the future?

How they need to do is put a modern motor and 6sp trans out of a Chevy truck breakdown problems solved, yes seems kind of pricey upfront but all you need is a wrecked truck pull it put it in and save on a ton of maintenance
Josh Krause You assume we didn't try that. We tried a 350 and a 440. The 440 was close but there were numerous issues I'm not going to go into. Suffice it to say, every expert thinks it's the simple answer, but it doesn't work in reality. In the end, the best thing for the car was the engine it was supposed to have so we installed a rebuilt Caddy 390 with as many modern upgrades as were available. Engine issues solved. Also, engine issues were the least of the problems. Brakes, transmission, steering... Even if rebuilt and restored to how a '59 really works, things worked really poorly in '59.
Swap in a ls motor & full disc brake conversion reliability solved.
If only it were that simple. Every armchair mechanic has sworn that the fix is really easy, but the few I've hired get halfway into the project then back out and admit it was more than they realized.

My 401k, Roth IRA and savings accounts are a good investment. The car is about making a lifelong dream come true.
Its seems like he mentioned more cons than pros with that thing. Yes a costly life "long dream". I have a good feeling that guy will grow "tired of that life long dream" and sooner or later sell the head ache to the highest bidder. If I owned a car like that it would be paying for it self plus more... I'd be at every event in the US if I could lol cashing in off that caddy. Why not?
For the record, I am that guy, well, one of them. You're very astute about how the experience wears on me. The thing is, I got it 99% across the finish line so I'm not about to give up on it in the last few feet of the race. As of right now I only have two things left to fix, suspension and the windshield wiper motor. That's it, everything else is dialed in. As for Sean's car, even after 5 years of being in good condition it's gone back into the shop to be completely repainted. Par for the course. These cars typically sell for about $80k or more when sold so even if you don't get your investment back, you're not exactly broke for the effort. Because the car is the copyrighted likeness and logo of a Sony-owned property you can't exactly rent it out. A guy in Illinois rented out his Ghostbuster services for birthday parties and events back in the 90's. He was sued by Sony for the minimum licensing fee ( which was about $100k ) so it's not so easy to make money back on this.

As awesome as the car is, I don't really like this video. It focuses way too much on the skits and not enough on the Car: how it was made, what it takes to maintain it, what it's been used for...I would have liked to hear more stories about what that car has been through. And if the guy who made it has ever been in the presence of the original Ecto 1, and what that was like.
High production values and good access, but I was just hoping for something more in-depth.
Funny you should mention that. Years ago we had always planned to make a video dedicated to just "Hi, I'm Eric and Bryan and here's our car" and just walk you through a tour of the Ecto-1 and what everything does. When this video was done we kind of shelved that idea but maybe we should get to work on this. I'll let you know.

Stopped watching when I heard the word “replica”. At the beginning you say you have 2 of the 8 cars left in existence that we’re used in the film. If that’s true then those cars are not “replicas”.
We never said the 8 were used in the film. I just rewatched that segment to see what I said.
We were talking about 1959 Cadillacs that were ever made, not Ectomobiles. The '59 Superior hearse (mine) is one of 124 made that year. Sean's '59 M&M is one of 88 made that year. The screen used Ecto 1 and Ecto 1A were both '59 M&Ms that were part of that batch of 88 made by Miller Meteor.
0:25 - I didn't say any of them were screen used, although now that you mention it two of them were. There's roughly 8 Ectomobiles ( actually a few more in 2020 ) in the US. Two of those would be owned by Sony, the Ecto 1 and the Ecto 1A ( which is still in pieces at Cinema Vehicle Services ) but the rest are replicas.
- They are not replicas of a 1959 Caddy, they are real 1959 Caddy's.
- They are replicas of a movie car, only two real Ectos ever existed ( The Ecto 1 and Ecto 1A )
The 3rd car that tries to claim it's "1 of 3" is a bit of a fraud. It was owned by an Orlando theme park in the 90's and used for display or as part of their show. Although this car fetched a high price at auction, it may have inflated it's value by claiming it was "1 of 3 authorized by Sony" which is a stretch to me, especially given how many errors and mistakes there were on that car.
I'm sorry you disliked the video but am glad you stopped watching. I need less witnesses to the crime we commit at the end of this video.
@@fifthrider so how many would there be? Because this video is almost 10 years old. I roughly think there is about 4, 5, 6 Ectos made from 59 Superiors and I think about 2 from Eurekas (one of them is "Ecto 1 resurrection" here and Insta asides from the one you mentioned in your video for the Barrett Jackson auction).🧐 Don't know how many were made from S&S (although one person I follow on insta has a S&S and some other one that appeared on Britains got talent), MM coaches(apart from the one in this video and Loren's) though... Haven't been keeping track of those as the Superiors interest me more
