Killer video man. One of my all-time fav albums. Great work digging up that interview, very interesting.
Glad you liked it
Such a killer album...thanks for sharing this
Great source of information loved the Cure post as well👍
Settle an argument me and my butty in work were watching this post and I said I think you are local to us in South Wales and he thinks your accent is Irish 🤣🤣🤣
I'M a Swansea boyo living in the USA
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Thought the accent was local .
I've been playing a few yrs and love playing along to the Cult and especially the Cure .
Bought a few pedals of late to try to emulate the sound so the videos you post are a great reference.
Also love Will Seargents sound ( hint hint😎)
Take care👌
Beautiful man. Cult Electric was the first album I brought with my own money. Still love playing Lil’ Devil and Live Removal on my axe to this day! Great interview.
Billy's rig is insane, and I cant help but love it 🤓🤘
Yep. Overkill
The ‘Love’ album was solely the Roland JC-120 with a Boss SD-1 providing all the drive and then the Boss analog delay and.flanger. No Vox or Marshall used then.
Billy is a great example of what a rock guitarist should be and the Cult is great!
Agreed.
When asked what you need to be a great guitarist..mduffy said get a really cool haircut and a hot girlfriend....his head was in the right place👍
Thanks for this!! His sound is deceptively hard to get from this era
I'd never noticed the riff to she sells sanctuary is in fact Old Man by Neil Young. Love is a flawless album. Very sad to read Steve brown died last year
I read an interview with Billy where he was saying that when he was getting back into the AC30 he contacted Vox and they brought out two to where they were rehearsing and he was thinking they were bringing either their hardwired amps or a UK made AC30, so when he plugged in and loved the tone that was his thinking BUT when he looked at the amp a little closer he was blown away that they were neither as they were both the Chinese versions! He claims he plays the Chinese ones but who knows other than him.
That's good to know.
Absolutely true!! Chinese made. Who cares. Billy has one of the better tastes in guitar tone. He could play whatever he desires.
@@diegozamorano3467 I don't remember saying anyone cared or that he didn't have a great tone so I'm not sure why you sound so defensive.
NAILED that intro! That's been one of my favourite riffs for most of my life, actually, haha :-) I was a weird kid. Listened to Guns 'n' Roses in kindergarten. True story.
Been listening the goat 1994 the Cult album in loop the whole day. How amazing was Astbury with the lírics and Duffy’s guitar tone from another planet. You should analyze that guitar tone. It’s an underrated album but Billy is playing his best.
I think tracks like "Phoenix" and "Big Neon Glitter" are bigger showcases of Duffy's sound. Equally pivotal to his sound round this time was of course the hollow-body Gretsch.
Other people using a twin setup of JC120/AC30 in recent years include Simon Hinkler (the Mission) and Christian Savill (Slowdive). The Edge used to use a JC120 in some songs, as did Bono - round about 1983. During that period there were more JC120s (3) on a U2 stage than there were AC30s (2).
Oh... and me.
Nice
Sonic Temple is still one of my favorite albums.
They had a good run of bangers.
Close but no cigar. Nothing sounds like his Gretsch White Falcon. The tone cannot be duplicated with a solid body
I want to see a RUclips All Star Band
Drums-Carter McLean
Bass- Scott's bass lessons
Rhythm Guitar - circle of tone
Lead Guitar- Ola englund
Synthesizer / keys- doctor mix
Vocals- Ken Tamplin
Recorded - Spectrum sound Studios
Produced and mixed - Rick beato( Rick obviously gets to play a solo)
Thank you for posting. I watched the Electric video as well. I have been a long time Cult fan and like you, played in a cover band back in the day that could have almost been called a Cult tribute band. Didn't have money being a kid so did my best to get the tone out of a Boss HM-2, BF-2, and DD-2. Billy has done a number of rig rundowns on his 3 amp setup and what I am wondering is where with that set up is his overdrive tone coming from. I am thinking likely from his pedals rather than the amps. To run into an AC30, Marshall or Friedman, and JC-120, it seems like you would need to set the tube amps on the verge of breakup and then hit a pedal. What are your thoughts?
Billy has gone with more distortion live than what is on the album. The crunch is probably just the JCM800 but I'm speculating.
The chorus in the JC120 was recreated in the original Boss CE1. A good modern clone is made by PastFX. Great preamp in it too. It's the best chorus sound I've ever heard.
Good info. Shame is the same price as the amp these days.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE the clone is really faithful 👍
Your channel is brilliant. I have 2 requests for tone reverse-engineering:
1. Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
2. Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing
Good suggestions.
You should do a video about The Almighty. Most underrated british band ever! Their first 3 albums are killer!
Good shout.
Actually from Glasgow
Great one, Owen! \m/(>
if you are able to get a hold of a SansAmp psa1 going direct and with that mic'd up Dual Rec you got there, you can do a Rammstein episode.
Very cool. Do you have quotes on the setup etc? "
@@CIRCLEOFTONE this too - guitar tracking production of 6th album ruclips.net/video/GzngdYzCNkA/видео.html
Oh yeah great sound.
How's the keto going? ;)
10 pounds so far.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Superb.
I really enjoy your videos, even though I'm not a gearhead or even a guitarist. Given all your Goth guitar focus, I would like to hear what you think of Danny Ash and John McGeogh. These are two absolute titans, imo
Thanks man! I did John a while back. ruclips.net/video/v27fuv856HE/видео.html bauhouse will have to be done one day
I read,by Billy himself somewhere..I know it sounds like one of those random comments. you hear on the internet.
The BF 2 came shortly after,,maybe more reliable for live use and he likes to be able to replace pedals easily...The actual Flanger used on Sanctuary was a Guyatone..
I'm trying to find evidence but effing can't..So yes it sounds like a random comment on the Internet...He also inherited pedals when Jamie Stewart joined ,who had been a guitarist before..
I know there was a Phase 100 in that lot..About the Electric stuff..There is footage of Billy doing the early Electric stuff and on that,it looks like he is using a Tubescreamer as a boost..Doesn't mean that is on the records though..I think the Les Paul he first had when doing Electric was a Sunburst Standard, but when he saw Slash using one.. He decided against it..
Ah !! Here is the Sunburst Les Paul.. I watched this at the time and not long after went and bought the Album.. :)
ruclips.net/video/5a52SMv4npw/видео.html
TAP clip was great, thanks. I think you got a bit too much gain/dist on it.
The original has a clean guitars layered over it too with delays via the JC120. My sound would be the gritty bit you hear underneath. Yeah just a tad too much gain on my end. I needed filtertron pickups etc too.
i disagree. It was perfect
@@CIRCLEOFTONE I think they are more like single coils also had a Boss DM3 I think , but your playing is really good.
@@swettyspaghtti Listen to the Album Im not wrong
Derek Smalls. Yeah.
The Cult are the last great Rock & Roll band
How are you able to run a dz30 in europe, did you use a step down converter?
I'm in Florida. Hehe
@@CIRCLEOFTONE sweet, lucky bastard! great content man! You're doing the dark lord's work 🤘❤
Feelin' Culty, aintcha?
The Cult: Yes. Southern Death Cult: not so much. Nice vid.
I used to ride with my neighbor to high school and he would play Southern Death Cult and Sonic Youth. meh
@@HazeAnderson Fancy meeting you here. Love yer vids Haze.
@@DrexProjects Thank you! Cheers :)
New look looks mean, :-)
I know its not goth, but what about Jane's Addiction era Dave Navarro?
Too much gain on She sells sanctuary. Those pick ups are too hot I guess
Yep
