- How do submarines store and cook enough meals to sustain their crew for months without ever surfacing?
Unlike surface ships, submarines cannot receive regular food deliveries. From the moment they leave port, they carry everything they will need for the entire mission. Fresh produce, meats, and even everyday essentials like milk and bread must be carefully packed, rationed, and stored in ways that maximize both space and freshness. Every inch of available space is used-from hidden compartments under the floor to tight storage lockers along the walls.
Cooking on a submarine presents an entirely different challenge. The galley, or kitchen, is no bigger than a small walk-in closet, yet the crew must be fed three times a day, every day, without fail. Specially trained Navy culinary specialists manage the impossible-preparing thousands of meals in a high-pressure environment, using limited resources, and keeping morale high even in the most isolated conditions.
But how long can fresh food really last underwater? What happens when supplies run low? And what does a meal actually look like after 90 days at sea?

I'm US Army 1980-1983. I took our cooks for granted, but I really should not have. I ate well in the army, so here I would like to salute all the cooks in the US Military. You guys rock!

..I was USN 81-85, but on a surface ship. I will never forget the experience I had while in the Navy. The food was always good and I made some terrific friends. This was 40 years ago, and I still have fond memories. Boot camp was a little scary tho I will admit. LOL...Good luck to all the young sailors just starting their careers in the military. After graduating from HS, if college is not for you, consider the military.

Lol! I served my sea time on submarines. It was an all hands evolution. The fresh fruits and vegetables, it last about 45-50 days. Then canned, dehydrated would be used. The older boats, Cold War era, had a crew of about 160, missile boats, fast attack, about 100, diesel boats about 75-80. Missile boats about 180 days, average. Everything came through a 2 foot diameter hatch. It did take time. The cooks, these guys WERE the real magicians. They could make canned and dehydrated food taste like mom's home cooking. At Sub Base New London in the enlisted dinning facility (EDF) there was a sign above the chow line that proudly stated " Through these lines pass the best fed sailors in the fleet". I was the Doc, Independent Duty Corpsman, on Sub's. Left sub fleet in 1985. I started in Submarines in 1979 at Naval Base Subic P.I. diesel sub there.
I served on an old Sturgeon-class sub in the 90s. I remember them serving us hamburger and meatloaf using this soybean "meat" product. Yuck.

My dad was on USS 585 Skipjack in the 1960s. I remember him telling us about the food and how much he appreciated what the galley accomplished for the crew.
Was your dad ever allowed to talk about the Cuban Missle Crisis of October 1963? My uncle was a diesel “pig-boat” sailor stationed at Key West and would only say that his boat was ordered up the East Coast and stay out of the way. What actually happened he took to his grave.
@@Sandy_Loam-088 my dad wasn’t involved in that. He was transferred to the Skipjack in ‘63 or ‘64. I was really little.
My dad never really talked about anything serious regarding his time in the Navy.
There was one time the boat didn’t return to base in Norfolk when it was supposed to. Nobody would give the families any information on what was happening. There was a recorded number to call for updates, but it never changed. It finally showed up about a week later, but he never said why they were so late.
My mom was terrified because my dad’s best friend had transferred from the Skipjack to the Scorpion and was on board when it was lost. She was afraid something like that possibly happened.
These guys and gals are true culinary experts on these boats. They deserve 5 stars across the board for their constant efforts and Hard work on these missions..........

Thankfully only had one hitch serving on the submarine fleet, but I went on to serve the Navy for 38 years before I retired as a master chief petty officer some 3 years ago serving on Nimitz class aircraft carriers the food was always fresh and hot, served with plenty of gravy made it taste better and palatable.
Yeah , Gravy is the secret weapon for all bland foods. Well done surviving so long . Wait till musk gets his hands on the menu cards even trumps Mc Donalds is been cut back to only 4 big macs a day also saves on his corset bills.

I’m curious how much coffee and tea would a submarine carry, it must be at at least 5,000 Ibs for a 90 day mission if every sailor had two 8oz cups of coffee. And maybe 100 cups (US baking measurement) of loose black tea for tea drinking sailors.

as a chef with over 40 years experience I could serve and prepare 100 meals by myself easily! ( in that walking in closet) I see about a dozen crew anyone else catching my drift? busy small restaurants serve 2-3 hundred meals per service with ease if your worth your salt. having said that I support the military 100 percent!!

As a kid, Korean war orphan, I lived the work-lunch life. You get to learn, eat at school. Better than home. Glass bottles with FOOD! Eat slowly, only a little, lasts longer. I once saw frozen bread 1 year and still good. Made Fabulous French Toast with frozen eggs, defrosted, and powdered maple sugar crystals

My Dad, RIP, was on the USSScorpion in the 1960’s (before it was lost at the bottom of the ocean) and often said he “slept” with ham loins. Those kept well at sea for the time of the mission. Still, he said the food was always good. We often had hamburgers for Easter dinner since he didn’t much care for ham!

no, there are plenty of dehumidifiers, and other air quality regulation devices throughout the boat.
Amazing. For fresh vegetables, you can take cabbage, later on you can turn into kimchi.

Submarines can in fact resupply at sea either by a specialized surface vessel or submerged by a dsrv style resupply sub.

Really... how this is possible, since only 2 DSRVs exist for a fleet of nearly 75 subs? And they ride on the back of another submarine.
Submarine tenders USS Frank Cable, USS Emory S. Land, USS McKee. USS Frank Cable homeported in Guam. I've seen it twice.
We were once @sea, tied to the tender, while providing Mid-Shipman tours in Annapolis. Couple hundred yards off the beach.. tried to convince the old man to stay long enough for a sea-service ribbon.. I've humped more than my share of #10 cans down the weapons hatch, escape trunk and even the bridge.. it's a good way to die!

Frozen goods are kept in the freezer. Non refrigerated items are what the sailors are sleeping by.

I love watching these kinds of things, my mom used to work for Yuma proofing ground... And she fed a lot of soldiers! I think it's something like 1500 TDYs a month.. people use to tease me that my mom made enough food to feed the army, and I just laugh and tell them that my mother used to work at Yuma proofing ground in Yuma Arizona 😊

In the 80's we walk on it. Canned food. 5 lb rectangluar cans of coffee. Missed midrats.
I love breakfast, but i would make sure dinner was available for months. Sucks going to bed hungry.
Great video. Prepped foods, chopped veggies and meats, may store smaller then un-prepped foods. Also, protein powder may store longer and easier for a meat substitute and for longer tours. Finally, the meat supplier may be able to press thawed meats into a form then freeze dried for better condensed storage on the vessel.
So how do subs handle the venting of all of the cooking appliances. Fryers, grills etc all normally require huge exhaust fans?

This is a time when the carnivore diet would be ideal
I would think frozen fruit blended with powdered milk would be a great substitute for just plain powdered milk.

Wrong thumbnail image for this video, other than an Irwin Allen show I've never seen a submarine with portholes in the sides. Is that so that if something burns on the stove they can open the window and let the smoke out?
In this video he talks about how submarines make their food, but if a submarine needs food, what they do is have the food flowed in via.a helicopter, not to give there location out, it's very secretive, especially at sea, but because I was in the Army, whenever we needed food we drove in to garrison for anything we needed for the troops, but that was on base, out in the field is a different story, and I was in charge of the field equipment, to make sure everything was in working order, other than cooking in the mess hall. It didn't even bother me it was part of my job.
My ex was aboard the U.S.S Scorpion 589...Sub life fascinates me.
I hope people realize that the navy have been dealing with this for at least a 100 years. The menus have been optimized and the preservation of leftovers too. They are constantly updating methods of cooking, storage, stretching of supplies.
These chefs have been specially trained for this. They are really amazing but not much creativity allowed.
This is really informative and interesting, but there is no way I could live on a submarine. I think I would actually just panic. Just knowing that I am underwater and not going to surface for quite a long time. I think I would freak out from this.
