Just finished playing the game and holy heck this game an emotional roller coaster full of happiness and terror. You can really tell the creators of Danganronpa were behind the writing for this.

I loved playing this game. The story had me hooked and I grew attached to the characters. And the ending had me in tears. It’s also refreshing to see a positive review like this rather other reviews I saw that were just hating on the game without giving much reason other than “I disliked this game”. You actually talked about the game and its gameplay and gave reasons for why you liked it. That’s enough for me to like and subscribe.
The only problem I have with the game is the gameplay outside of combat. Combat is ok (nothing too great) but the exploration can be wonky and extremely laggy and I've heard this is only on pc, but the cursor moves way too slow. The fps drops to around 13-25 ish. The story is obviously whats great about it, but the gameplay makes it so hard to even try and finish it. I never got to finish it and will try later because the I just don't see how anyone could put up with the gameplay. It's like if Zero Escape gameplay mixed with Danganronpa 2 gameplay but ran like it was Ark Survival Evolved (worst fps game ever)
Is the story really any good? it sounds illogical to me, and honestly... knowing it's the team behind Danganronpa, it probably is. Do they actually explain what's going on? and does the explanation makes any sense?
I wanted to thank you for making this review. This game had completely slipped under my radar, but, after seeing this, I picked it up and now have over 70 hours in it. It really is a lot of fun!
Best tip for starting out, is when you're party gets wiped out or you need a reset for your team...kill off everyone except Sachika and set the difficulty to 1 so that revives are basically free without shigane. Setting difficulty to 1 also resets your parties stamina gauge and turns off enemies if you need to grab your fallen items. Once your team is back up, put the difficulty at whatever you want.
It's more by Lancarse, the developer behind ETRIAN Odissey, smt strange journey, Lost dimension, monark and the Just released DIOFIELD CHRONICLES. They are Amazing.
I'm seriously getting heavy DR2 vibes from this game's setting. Even though I know they're two totally different games, I'm still gonna have to pick this up ASAP. Great review!
The writing is definitely on par with the DR games and goes to show that the remaining team still can deliver the same kinds of qualities of storytelling in new and surprising ways! Thanks for checking out my review!
Excellent Review! probably will have to pick this up and give it a playthrough at some point! Really loved the Danganronpa games! even the Ultra Despair Girls was great! although quite different gameplay than what the others had to offer! all in all! this looks great! I liked some of the Etrian games as well! specifically Persona Q and the the Fanfir Knight one as well, so this gameplay in Zanki Zero as far as teh map and dungeon crawling is concerned? looks right at home! also a sucker for base building mechanics myself! Good video man! and subscribed! :D
Great review Alex! Yes, you did stress me out a bit with the first paragraph 😀All the trailers combined don't come close to giving us a good understanding of what this game is like, yet your review manages to do this easily without story spoilers.

If you can’t afford it now, I certainly would recommend getting it on a sale. It’s more dungeon crawler than Zanki Zero is, so the gameplay is the highlight of the experience and not necessarily its storytelling
This was a really well-done review, great job! I could not but feel a need to get this game, not only does it look good and I love myself some dungeon crawling games, but you also explained it in a way that made me instantly understand all the more complex systems of the game.
I am playing the JP version, the CV of Sho and Mirai is the same as Freeza and Goku (Dragonball Z), they have a lot of dirty talks which delight me a lot.
Benki Zero really stressed the hell out of me. Trying to make sure everyone survives means everyone ages the same, and I suddenly found myself with a team of old dudes nearly pissing themselves and are about to die from stress at any moment. It was no exaggeration to say I was as stressed as all of them are.
This looks like a really good game and I’ve been on the fence about it for awhile now due to the fact I’m not the best at survival games like this but u made me more curious about it and I think I might pick this up after a little more research. Thanks for the review

It is an amazing review even though I don't agree with everything, especially the clunky fighting. Still it makes me unbelievably sad that the likelihood of Zanki Zero getting a sequel is so small because of the lack of fans for the game.
I'm still holding out on hope that they're working on something special, even if it's not a direct follow-up. The story seems to have ended pretty cleanly.
This was an amazing review! I'd been on the fence on this title but after seeing this I think I've finally made my decision. You covered every point I had questions on covered them in away I can firmly grasp. Keep it up, I'm looking forward to more from you!
Sounds like a mix of mechanics from Legend of Grim Rock, Darkest Dungeon, and Rogue Legacy with the overall presentation of Danganronpa. Which sounds pretty cool.
I'm usually not a fan of Base building (Fallout 4 ruined it for me) but I didn't feel like it was a mechanic that was shoved down my throat. I honestly didn't even worry about upgrading my base much until i was at Stage 4 ish Overall, I enjoyed the game. I loved the story, the characters were fun and likeable, the gameplay was fun, and the mechanics were great! I've been suggesting this game to all my friends since beating it! It's truly a unique game that deserves more attention than what it got!
Considering the people who worked on the game, along with the general concept, I find the plot of this game quite intriguing. I think I'll check out a playthrough or so and who knows? Maybe I'll pick up the game for myself.

@@BacklogBattle I believe you're right. But it would have been some nice extra exposition none the less in my opinion. It was some scenes with the characters in the child phase as it was thought of as "sexualization of a minor" or something of those lines.
@@BacklogBattle Well said! I hope they make something like this again. I just love the weird concept this game has I wouldn't mind seeing it used once or twice more within reason so it doesn't get old.

Subscribing. Great review, think I'll go ahead and pick it up. Does the game seem to have a general direction? Like...is there going to be an end, or do you just keep playing?
There’s definitely an end... and a really good one, at that! To elaborate, unlike most survival games, this does have a story progression much like what you’d find in traditional RPGs. In fact, it’s got more story than most DRPGs! I generally don’t like the latter genre, but this game’s one of those unique ones that transcends its own genre.
Just to add my own two cents in here, I think for a first entry it's a pretty solid game so far. :) (I've only just gotten through stage 1). I wish the battle system was a little bit more refined, but I can't fault them too much seeing as they haven't really done RPG stuff before and when they did do it, it didn't come off well either. (I'm looking at you Ultra Despair Girls). I do wish the instruction were a little more clear, because I didn't even know how to perform a charge attack until I looked it up on RUclips. I had thought you had to hit the little pink area and it would become a charged once you'd done that with all your characters, but you just have to keep holding the button till they're all charged. It does freak me out a little just because I'm easily spooked, so I would put that in there as well. I definitely wouldn't recommend this game to a kid. But a teenager who can handle a bit of creepiness and some gore? Definitely. I'm super excited to see where this game goes and what it has in store for me. :)
Glad you’re liking it and thank you for sharing your experience! Often times it’s a bit lonely playing a game when no one else is, and it’s been really interesting reading people’s comments about the game!
Some of the items that cure status effects actually heal a few ticks of health, and you can improve them by spending points on a specific ability that yields more health when using non-consumable items
This game looks beautiful and engaging but the clones and death thing freaks me out, don't the characters get bothered by that? Being in a loop full of death and coming back must feel tiring. Also best boy 8:54
Man watching this Review I'm a little hesitant to start now (it was on Sale here on Aussie PSN for $40 so checked Ebay and got a Physical Copy from the UK for like $50) but screw it I love Danganronpa SO MUCH that I know the Story will be worth it even if I don't end up liking the gameplay... I feel like the Description on PSN didn't do that great of a job explaining what type of game it was but like I said, FULL FAITH since it's the DR Team 👍
The story doesn't have a time limit. Your clones have a time limit until they die of old age, but then you just pop out new clones of them in the child stage. You can grind into the hundreds of days if you want to.
Looks like a game heavily inspired by Etrian Odyssey while at the same time wanting to be different enough to not just be a "Etrian Odyssey clone". Looks interesting enough, though honestly I would prefer either the regular turn based turns that EO uses or the Grandia II or KotoR style semi turn based semi real time hybrid where time passes expect when it is your time to pick what you are doing, some games I just like the turn based a lot better in, imagine if Fire Emblem decided that it wanted to do real time fights rather then turn based, it just wouldn't be a Fire Emblem game if they did that.
I think that I play this game for like 20 min than I save it and it show 2 hours :D next time think that I am playing 40min,save the game it shows 2,5 hours :D now I have around 8 hours played and it feels like 2. wierd but true
@@BacklogBattle i just picked this up on steam and man.. the ability to just stop play whenever on vita and switch is so underrated.. especially with a game with save points
From what I can tell from both of the games you mentioned, the battle system is quite different compared to Zanki Zero, with Zanki being real time in nature. That said, the difficulty of the game controls the speed in which the enemies move and act, so you could play it in that manner. I think the base building, crafting, and gathering aspects of the game are quite interesting, and with the Shigabane rewarding you for dying (such a weird concept!), you might even be more inclined to play at more difficult settings! I say download the demo and check it out and let me know what you think! The demo save carries over to the full game!
@@BacklogBattle Thanks for the response! The crafting and base building you mentioned in the video is what really appealed to me. It's on sale right now on PSN for $24, so I think I'm going to pick it up. I've been a huge DRPG fan ever since I played the old Forgotten Realms games in the 90s. (Would love to get the Etrian Odyssey series on modern consoles or PC) :)
Glad to be of help! I should point out that Lancarse, the developers of Etrian Odyssey, worked on the dungeon elements of this game! You’ll be in good hands 😉👍
@@BacklogBattle Picked it up yesterday, and I'm enjoying it so far! First boss was a bit rough since I was beating him with sticks (didn't build the workshop first, so that was my fault). My only minor quibble with the game is I wish I could turn off voices for bumping into walls and gathering (wears thin when you're filling up 10 water bottles a day and each time they say "what's this?", "I'll take that!", etc.), but otherwise it's great! Thanks again! :)
Glad to hear you’re enjoying it! It’s certainly not a mainstream game by any stretch, but based off of what you said, I had a feeling you’d enjoy it! I don’t know how, but you’ll have to let me know how you feel about the whole game when you beat it! It’s got some crazy twists and turns 😉
Could anyone recommend this as a person who enjoys dungeon crawlers, especially Grimrock? I'm wondering if the gameplay is strong enough for someone who doesn't enjoy Danganronpa's story or fan service
I’ve never played Grimlock, but I do think the interconnection between its dungeon crawling action gameplay, base building, and aging aspects are all well done! I also don’t really remember if there was a lot of fan service, only that the story is dark and can catch you by surprise!
I’m personally not a huge fan of real time combat in my JRPGs myself, but there are ones that are pretty good! I actually play Zanki Zero very patiently and it worked for me for most of my time with the game!
That's good to hear. This does sound like a fun Mordor: The Depths of Dejenol style game but with loads of modern gameing mechanics. @@BacklogBattle I'll just have to wait for a summer sale or something, cause $70 Canadian is a steep price to ask.
As I’ve said in the comments, you do you! I’m just here to say if the game’s good and what to expect! A game’s worth will always very for person to person, and at a steep $70 Canadian, that would certainly give anyone a quick pause!
Absolutely. Many months later, I'm still remembering a lot of what it's showed me and wanting to come back for more. And the survival gameplay blend with dungeon crawling is pretty good imo
Sadly, I think that’ll be up to you. But I will say that there is a PS4 demo to try out with saves that transfer to the full game, and that IMO regardless of what price you buy it, I think you’ll have a fun experience if you liked the things I had to say.
Understandable! I’m not a huge fan of that either. I wish I liked the genre to play Persona Q, for example, but it just never clicked with me until this game.
I really want to like it but the price is too high and apparently it is also get censored and also many people find the story boring... I think i gonna pass for now. Probably wait for the Uncensored patch if any that is.
It doesn't look like they're ever going to be uncensoring the western version, though all they edited was just a couple of still images, the changes don't really sound all that bad to me tbh
Hey, this isn't a big deal, but the developers of this game are not the same people who made Danganronpa. Danganronpa was made in-house by Spike-Chunsoft (actually just Spike - at the time they weren't the same company). This game was made by Lancarse, who worked on the first two Etrian Odyssey games, as well as the Persona Q titles and SMT: Strange Journey. First Person Dungeon Crawlers are basically their expertise.
Dahras1 this isn’t true either. While Lancarse did develop much of the game, a good majority of the people who worked on Danganronpa worked on this game. It doesn’t take too much time to search this online and find that this is, in fact, true. This is also reflected in the press kit that I received for this review copy.
English dub is awful. Sho and mirai sadistic tone and sense of humor is just lost. Game has a lot of problem. 80% of the plot is a waste of time after not so big twist. Truly Sisyphus work that makes anything you did shallow. Ending is a either sequil bate of just gigantic nothing otherwise. Plot ignores the most interesting things you discover trough story and notes and just discards them. But game sold very poor so might as well consider it as a failure. Gameplay is awful. While it has all those parts you named they barely work. Base building has no real use as kitchen lvl 2+ does nothing interesting. Bedroom bonding events cant be grinded without bedroom lvl 4-5 which you can only get in the second to last dungeon. Whole sleeping and crossover genes is one time per spawn use mehcanic. The only thing that do anything are warehouse lvl 1-2 and crafting station. But even there progression is not even. Lvl 4-5 weapons and armor are barely better than previous while jump from lvl 1 to 3 is HUGE. Armor does nothing. That leads us to combat and difficulty. Everything oneshots you on lvl 3-5 so armor is waste of time and even dangerous when dealing with traps. The only thing you need are weapons. COmbat may look fine as they introduce wealpoints, charging, clion and few other mechanics in the first few stages. But after that it all falls apart with simple strafe baiting of stupid AI over and over.
I Got this game recently and i Will Start at Difficulty 1 then work my way up. I love how the story is incapsulating me, deeper and deeper into what each character has Done and gone through before the situation their all in started. The Mechanic of Survival is Very important and I see how crucial it is in order to maintain a Healthy party and A WAY To Be more effective and Efficient in combat and Outside of combat

@@BacklogBattle I'll be sure to let you know when I pick it up.
I picked it up today and played up to the end of the first stage. As a huge Danganronpa fan, I'm enjoying this game a lot.
Glad to hear! It gets so much better after that 😉
It's on sale for $20CAD. Should I grab it?
I haven’t kept track of the prices for that, but anything lower price than retail is good for that!
Nice review subscribed :)
Thank you! Hope you check out the other reviews! You'll find that they've just kept improving over time!
@@BacklogBattle haha sure, I already watch Sakura Wars video and AI Somnium files review
superb review. i dont usually subscribe to anybody but i feel i would miss out alot of honest review like yours if i dont. =)
Thank you so much!
02:32 no potions but bandages exist too, albeit a bit later in the game
So, how was it?
>Story has a time limit
Aww, fuck it then. Fuckin' dropped.
The story doesn't have a time limit. Your clones have a time limit until they die of old age, but then you just pop out new clones of them in the child stage. You can grind into the hundreds of days if you want to.
is it as good as danganronpa ?? Great review btw :D
Yes!
It’s actually co developed by the Etrian Odyssey devs 😉
I think that I play this game for like 20 min than I save it and it show 2 hours :D next time think that I am playing 40min,save the game it shows 2,5 hours :D now I have around 8 hours played and it feels like 2. wierd but true
I know the vita is dead but this is perfect handheld game, vita or switch is perfect for visual novels/dungeon crawlers.
I’d go further and say for any RPG! Imagine not having to worry about save points and just suspending the game any time!
@@BacklogBattle i just picked this up on steam and man.. the ability to just stop play whenever on vita and switch is so underrated.. especially with a game with save points
If I enjoyed the gameplay and complexity of Labyrinth of Refrain and Lost Child, would I enjoy this game?
This all sounds pretty cool but I still think the pricetag is a bit too big. It feels more like a 30-40€ game.
I'm pretty sure regardless of what price point and when you get it that you'll have a blast playing it! 😊
@@BacklogBattle I sure hope so! Thanks
Sadly the PC port seems to suffer from performance issues in several cases
Sorry to hear that 🙁
A very good review.
Thanks a lot!
Looks like a pretty good game. I love dungeon crawlers. Too bad I'll never buy it because of Sony California's censorship.
So basically, I need this game. Ok cool
It’s real good 😉
I wouldn't miss this, if they would release it on the Switch ;) Nice review, thanks!
dang it. I hate that JRPG's have moved toward real time combat.
@@BacklogBattle
I'll just have to wait for a summer sale or something, cause $70 Canadian is a steep price to ask.
As I’ve said in the comments, you do you! I’m just here to say if the game’s good and what to expect! A game’s worth will always very for person to person, and at a steep $70 Canadian, that would certainly give anyone a quick pause!
Damn this game soubds really interesting. Will wat for sale and probably snatch it
Budliky CZ it’s a really good game to get on sale! Hope you let me know when you do and what you think of it!
I played the demo version and it has 3h duration.
How many hours this magnific game has??
I finished it in 50 hours!
@@BacklogBattle thanks!! This game have such a great strory that i could play forever.
It looks so MUCH WORSE than Danganronpa. Is it worth it?
Absolutely. Many months later, I'm still remembering a lot of what it's showed me and wanting to come back for more. And the survival gameplay blend with dungeon crawling is pretty good imo
Really cool looking game, but is it really worth 60 euros?
Sadly, I think that’ll be up to you. But I will say that there is a PS4 demo to try out with saves that transfer to the full game, and that IMO regardless of what price you buy it, I think you’ll have a fun experience if you liked the things I had to say.
>.> im not into survival type games so I'll skip
Difficulty 1 turns off all of these mechanics, if you prefer playing without them!
Food like from Minecraft taken
.
I'm not really a fan of first person rpg game :(
Understandable!
It doesn't look like they're ever going to be uncensoring the western version, though all they edited was just a couple of still images, the changes don't really sound all that bad to me tbh
the censored parts were literally pedo shit
Sigh another game to put on my toppling pile of games I need to play
Hopefully, this game comes to the switch!
It has vibes of danganronpa with rpg elements and crap ending. Not worth the time invested. Also you can predict most of the story from the start.
if only this is also realised on switch. i dont want to sit in front of tv to play rpg anymore lol
I’ve said it plenty of times - portables let you play RPGs more often! Or at least even port the Vita version
Same here, really want it for switch :)
Maybe they will announce a port later? Surprised danganronpa games are not on switch yet!
@@clemntine3871 Here from the future to tell you that they are, they were released in December 2021
If it is a galge, I would have bought.
I tried the demo, it was shit.
